This reminds me of a time at school when I was punished for telling my history teacher that my grandfather died during WW2, when he fell off the guard tower at Auchwitz. Later, when it turned out to be true, my headmaster had to make an apology to me. He said "I'm sorry for punishing you, that was wrong." I replied "You weren't wrong, you just weren't Reich."

LOL as a German who read a couple letters from Wehrmacht soldiers I heard of other nicknames😂: 1. „Ivan’s cousin“ - referring to Americans as Soviet cousins 2. „Roo“ or „Roosevelts sons“ 3. „Chewinggum soldiers (or Cavallerie)“ 4. „Golden pheasants“ - making fun of the absurd amount of medals etc. Most common was „Ami“ which is still used today. I am 99% sure that this was a nickname from WW1 and there is no evidence that this term was actually used by the soldiers.

The French resistance was courageous, and formidable. I get why he sneered given it was mainly the Brits (plus empire nations) and US. But it was French soil, and the French people who had endured occupation, so the French had every right to accept the German surrender, as part of the victorious Allied force.
