    1) Yar is of specifically Persian roots and entered the Armenian language as a result of Persian influence prior to the Ottoman period. This is also why Kurdish has the word yar. 2) Armenian folk instruments are considered Middle Eastern as well as they are commonly found in many other Middle Eastern cultures. This does not take away their significance to Armenian music, nor does it ignore the deeply rooted and historic introductions of these instruments into Armenian musical culture. A vast majority of the instruments used by Armenians, Turks, Kurds, Arabs, and Greeks trace their origins to the Iranians… particularly the Sassanian period. 3) Armenians do not only call this instrument the “duduk,” but we have a native named called “dziranapogh” which literally translates to “wind instrument made of apricot” (referring to apricot wood being the primary material for the construction of the dziranapogh). Numerous ancient Armenian manuscripts have depicted this instrument, far beyond a major Kurdish presence even existed in Anatolia. The same can be said for a vast majority of instruments used traditionally in Armenian folk music. 4) Instruments like the oud, saz, kanun, tar, kamancha, dap, dhol, santur, dziranapogh, blul, shvi, and so many more have been recorded in Armenian manuscripts that date past the 3rd-4th millennium AD. Many musical traditions of Armenia (including 10/8, 5/8, 6/8, 9/8, etc rhythms) can be traced back to the years prior to Christ. It is believed that the Armenian ashughagan / gusanagan (bardic music), which accompanies many of the instruments I named earlier to date back to the era of Parthian rule over Armenia.
