Looking at lots of my old prototypes
It's 2025, so lets take a dive through just a few of my old prototypes.
Lots of these never turned into products but there is still lots of interesting odds and ends.
If you want to know about any of these specifically just ask and I might make a video about it.

Kickstarter 2021 Video, but it is just me messing up
I wanted this thing sooo bad when i was a child.

That there are no transition effects is correct, insofar as there are no transitions. But aren't there transitions? Well, yes, but they are manually operated. That's where the (very few) transition effects come in, (provided the transition, or cross/kross fader is not set to a direct "cut" curve). The black, white, chroma & luma become the transition effects: luma is just the basic, LITERAL cross FADE (based on the luma value of each channel), chroma does a color mixing (GRADIENT REPLACEMENT) cross between A & B. That. along with the fine adjust, provide for all sorts of wack cool mixing effects between A & B (depending on what's on each channel, so it'll be dead with no color, and kinda boring with just solid color, or fixed image on a channel), and the other two become Fade-Through white or black, (so with a gap curve set between A & B, dead center will be white or black).
The monitor out on the front design is simply taking into account that the main out is more likely to be fixed to something over a long term, while whatever gets used for a preview monitor may itself often change about, and where it gets placed often will, all the more, (and so, might as well leave an option to easily be able to access an input for similar reasons). Makes for easy access & hotswap, without messing with the rest of a set-up.
Will you make any more of these? 🥲
am currently selling kits if that is what you mean. catfullofghosts.etsy.com/listing/1103194946
Do you buy your gear from Japan? Cheers
I try to get stuff all over the place, locally, for the most part. International postage is pretty expensive,

what is the connection on the top of the pulse generator seen at 1:54 used for? kind of looks like coax

yup no edits on this one

Cool video showing the synth. Any chance you can share any info about creating an in rack display like that?
not sure there is much to share, its an off-the-shelf pal/ntsc display glued to some perspex. What did you want to know?
@@catfullofghosts4478 Thanks for replying! I see that there are some with the composite and power connected to the same cable. Did directly wiring the power cables to a eurorack connector work fine or do you suggest using a regulator of some sort?
@ i just checked, i used a 9v regulator and a ton of filter caps. But watch out lcds are really noisy on power supplies, so you could also run it off a separate dc supply
@@lifewithoutera i directly wired the power to a eurorack header in this case, but this case didn't have modules sensitive to power noise. I would use a fully separate power supply, LCDs can cause a huge amount of noise on the power bus and if you have other modules on there they will pick up that noise. I would have a separate power supply for screens that just runs of a nice DC wall wort
@@catfullofghosts4478 Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it and never even considered possible noise.
Can you use previously recorded footage on the mixer or does it have to be live footage?
the Video Equaliser needs video running into it to work. What that video is doesn't matter as long as it is composite video.
I have the same one
is your working?!
You move the output preview window by using the touchscreen on the device. Same for moving around Picture-in-picture; which you can do with live sources to produces feedback trails. 😲
oh what!???? I didnt even think to try that 😂
This is giving me terrible ideas for using the pitch-CV device XD
do it
Thanks for doing this. I don’t have this unit but I still enjoyed watching it back to fringe! And I love your post-it game.
Just picked up one of these! Any decent mixer is rare as hens teeth in NZ but looking forward to messing with this- your video helped with the decision! Cheers
How are you achieving the chroma key effect using green screen?
@@JohnSteed777 the output is going to another mixer that is doing the chroma key

@@videojordy hmmmm..... I must have forgotten the link... added it to the description for other people.
Really well done, beautiful visuals. It's like Dwarf Fortress on acid! I have a couple questions. Will you sell a prebuilt unit to me? Is there some way to increase the clock speed / refresh rate? It would look even better with the option to have it run at 30/60 fps.
it would look better. you are right. Sadly Im pushing the Chip I'm using pretty hard just to get the colour video. I should revisit trying to speed it up tho. Message me on etsy or insta if you want to chat about built units. I don't normally build them, but I have a spare one atm.
@@catfullofghosts4478 it is a very nice machine, I love it. It would be great if it had just a touch more resolution, only because even when you scale it up, it always has a border. it would be awesome to have the characters fully cover the active area. Thanks for the video, I have now colour coded the sliders and jacks : )
@@robinsutcliffe_video_art yeah, sadly those are limitations of the Chip I'm using
Thanks, I thought it might have been the maximum available. I will try it with a video to vga converter, I think that has a zoom function
i have it at home and if someone needs it we can make some deal or whatever :)
Thanks for the update. So excited to see how it progresses! All the best for the rest of the project.
I've been using Terasic DE10-Nano with FPGA game emulation system. I think it's triple the price compared to QMTECH board but it has bunch of helpful extra stuff.
What do you mean “Fpga emulation system”? Like Verilator or a co-simulation? I looked at the intell stuff a bit in the past, but for some reason Quartus feels clunky. Maybe it’s gotten better in recent years. Has it?
The project I'm using is named "MiSTer FPGA".
Oh i see what you mean, I thought you were emulating the fpga.
2cents: JTAG is perfectly acceptable for such a hyperniche project. Panasonic never gave firmware updates on our mixers and subsequently we just get on and abuse them.
Naw, im just one person, i feel like i want people to have the ability to easily update the system without having to get a jtag dongle and download a bunch of software. People dont want to go to all that effort
Awesome design. I'll have to keep that in the back of my mind for future projects. I think reed switches would also have good potential for some kind of patch matrix design.
oh yeah and then the pins have tiny magnets on them/ are magnetised. I like that that has no necessary contact to make it work
Looks great - I followed the link and bought it but instead of 31 videos and 36 images I got 16 images. Nice images but still a bit irritating. What could have gone wrong?
Did you get a text file as well with a link in it? Etsy only lets you sell digital assets upto 20mb, and this is around 2gb in size.
If you didn’t get the txt file with the link contact me on etsy so i can follow it up. 😊
@@catfullofghosts4478 Oh, yes, you are right. I rarely look into text files. Got everything now and like it - Thanx! 🍀

I bought the Tang Nano 9K with the specific intention of using it for video synthesizers, and was disappointed to find how little information there was about doing such a thing. Lo! Here you are. Do you know if my board is vastly underpowered for this sort of thing? It's a very cheap FPGA with power and an HDMI port and some IO pins. I was just going to have it do weird things with blanking and sending patterns to analog hardware I've made, but you're doing the whole kit and kaboodle aren't you?
i was looking at the Tang Nano 9k, but I had a lot of problems with the build setup, and getting that to work. I'm mostly using Xilinx cos that's what I know and there is a little more support then with Sipeed/Gowin. maybe there is lots of support and documentation but if so its not in English 🥲
speaking of fpgas and video in general, if you are trying to make HDMI video, that's maybe just below medium difficulty. Making composite video is a bit harder, but not impossible. and then doing things like mixing multiple channels of analoge video is VERY HARD, sadly.
Saludos cordiales una pregunta amigo por casualidad tendra los datos del Cargador de Voltaje del Edirol v4 le agradecería mucho.

Another great video! Learned some things about this mixer I've been using for years, cheers!
🤩
My god, I had one of these, they were great for their time.
I've been kind of interested in the VR-4HD as well, has anyone used one in a video glitch context? I don't love that there is no manual control over the fades, but it ticks a lot of other boxes specs wise.
Never got the chance to use one. I wonder if you could use usb midi to drive the fader manually
@@catfullofghosts4478 that would certainly make it better. Weirdly the manual says midi over USB is a thing but never lists the implementation chart anywhere I could see. Spam every cc and see what happens I guess.
@@politesociety there isnt a menu on the device that lets you set the controls? Edirol dont use a standard midi implimentation sadly. It’s either programable, or some weird fixed thing that could be notes, cc
@@catfullofghosts4478 I did end up finding the midi chart for it, and on top of most things being sysex based, i could only see fade time as an option, no direct control of the fader itself. I don't have the device so not sure entirely what's in the menu, but it didn't look promising. Not that fader control is the most important thing ever. There is sysex control of chroma key options though...
@@politesociety mmmm... yeah, I have a V1 that uses SYSEX as the only way to turn on midi control of channel inputs 🥲, its a big bummer
There was a bstock v4ex on ebay for $300 like 3 hours before this video came out. RIP
🥲
Yay! Love these vids, learned loads from previous ones
i have both a wjmx-50 and an MX70, the former being barely more capable than this here. i love them both dearly!
you mean the AGMX-70? its pretty capable, huge, heavy and its hard to find the 3dfx cards, but I think it has a lot of possibilities. Probably not in a live setting bcos there are lots of better mixers in terms of functionality vs size.
@@catfullofghosts4478 yeah i dont think there is a 70 in any other line so the AG is a bit cumbersome for me. i love using it for camera and internal feedback, out in the real world i find myself recording stuff and using it canned instead of being able to make it happen live which is fine, but i love to do it in real time and react to whats happening in the room with it
