WATCO DREI Droning around Decatur - September 7, 2024
On Saturday the 7th, I was able to get out of the house in time to setup and capture the Decatur & Eastern Illinois 101 Road Train as it crossed Lake Decatur, heading out of town around 8:30am. Although getting through the lights on the east side of town is a pain, I was able to beat the train home, and caught it going by me in Long Creek, following the train as it crossed Prairie View Road.
Later that day between 2 and 3 in the afternoon, I went back into town to find that the 100 yard job was just returning from their ADM run. They've had the WSOR trio assigned to Decatur for a couple weeks now, but this was my first time catching them in action. I didn't have time to get the drone laun...

CSX near Crawfordsville IN - 2023 & 2024

In both 2023 and 2024, I was passing through the Crawfordsville IN area and managed to catch a CSX train moving both times. Back in September 2023, I barely caught a southbound rolling by. A couple weeks back when I was in the area, I caught a northbound train. Managed to catch it rolling past an impressive elevator, plus in Linden passing the small railroad depot/museum.

Today (August 25) marks the final day of the TripleCrown Roadrailer before retirement. A single Westbound roadrailer (train 255) heads to Kansas City. In what NS is calling the Final Week for the Triple Crown Roadrailer trains, I caught Westbound Train 255 arriving Decatur on Sunday August 18. After waiting at Sangamon interlocking, the train proceeds west into the yard. NS4311 does the honors pulling a good sized string of trailers. As the train fades into the distance, I wonder if this is the last Roadrailer I'll get to see.....

On Saturday August 10, I took the kids around town and caught a few trains with the drone. We caught an NS roadrailer coming into town at the WABIC diamond. As soon as it cleared, CN A432 headed south across the diamond. Later in the day, we caught RailServe working the ADM yard on the north side of town with a pair of GP-15s.

On June 19, I caught a few trains around the Decatur area. First up is the WB auto parts train highballing west out of town. Next is a loaded coal train coming into town past Millikin University, then again at MLK crossing. Nice video of the Roadrailer esp. with the CN train waiting in the background! As I understand, Monday August 26, 2024 is the last scheduled TripleCrown train with Roadrailer equipment passing through Decatur : ( Glad your drone survived the pigeon squadrons, lol.

The train that was ahead of 256 was 32N. I saw both trains in Tolono wait almost two hours for CN to run a few of their trains and then 32N started moving.

Nice footage, the Gilman Sub is definitely a great line, but doesn't have too much train-wise. L585 is the job out of Clinton that usually ventures up to Gilman or down to Mount Pulaski/Springfield (depending on carload) in daylight. L554 is the nocturnal local. There are extras like the ITB shuttle you caught here or Gibson City-bound grain trains (that come off the Chicago Sub at Gilman), but that's about it.
There is actually typically a L564 daylight turn from Decatur to Springfield on Wednesdays, but I've heard it's hit or miss.

I grew up very near Decatur. Never heard of La Place or Hammond. Not as smart as I thought I was…
77 yrs old. Should of heard the coal burning giants running at 2am. Pushing snow at 80 mph. Whistle blowing steam. These were “ Hard Ass” engineers. As a kid born in 1946. I would lay in bed an enjoy. My dad was a conductor into 50’s. No fear people 🇺🇸👍
