    Thanks for this. I like the simplicity of the rubric, but it can be truly hard to get the Board to agree. Too often I see volunteer boards get into the weeds because they want to help, but all too often because they are trying to demonstrate that they are large and in charge. The secret is recruiting boards that understand where they can really help and where they end up sucking energy out of the organisation; all without hurting anyone's feelings or egos. Always an interesting journey.

    thank you Sarah for sharing this - and all the other awesome advice you share with the nonprofit sector 🤗 I have one question about that 25% investment: does that include resource of time? having someone dedicated to fundraising/marketing 25% of their time (or more of their time) to earn that extra 75% in donations? thank you!

    • @PivotGround
      @PivotGround 3 года назад

      Hi Susan, this is where it isn't clear what other people include when they calculate their cost to raise a dollar, however in my opinion I would include it. So that would mean roughly 25% of your staffing costs should go towards fundraising staff time. But notice I said staff costs and not time. I more experienced fundraiser might cost more, but they will likely accomplish a lot more for their time.

  • @Red-Rooster-Group
    @Red-Rooster-Group 3 года назад

    I couldn't agree more that nonprofits need to spend more on fundraising. I would even go so far as to say that spending up to 90 cents to earn a dollar is a good return on investment. In fact, According to an NYU Stern database for more than 7,000 US companies (updated in January 2018) in many different industries, the average profit margin is 7.9% for all companies and 6.9% for more than 6,000 companies excluding financials. So for nonprofits, getting 75 cents out of 25 a cent investment is extraordinary. I don't think enough people really understand this. Sarah, thanks for your work in education people about this.

    Like icetheatre, I find it challenging to apply a message like this to a small museum. It always feels like people understand messaging about a 'cause' like hungry children etc. but it seems harder to 'sell' arts (museum).

    • @PivotGround
      @PivotGround 3 года назад

      Try to remember that the people who's mission is to feed hungry children are looking to those organizations to tell them hungry children stories.... YOUR people care about the things you care about like history, waterways, the environment, etc. Tell them a story about one of those things and they will care about it.

    I struggle to get stories (especially compelling details) from patients who are still suffering in isolation and shame with their autoimmune skin disease, alopecia universalis. Most people who will describe their experiences already have a happy ending. What's a way to tap into more unresolved problems? My file has too many happy stories.

    • @PivotGround
      @PivotGround 3 года назад

      It’s OK if their problems are resolved, you’re just going to tell the first part of their story about the problems they experienced. Also you can keep people totally anonymous and just tell about your experience hearing their story.

    Our dance non-profit has no revenue generating programming - all of them are only possible with fundraising and we adjust our programming to the amount we fundraise each year -

  • @IceTheatreofNewYork
    @IceTheatreofNewYork 3 года назад

    I always find this challenging to apply to the arts - creating dancing on ice for the pleasure of the viewer - how to make this compelling?

    • @PivotGround
      @PivotGround 3 года назад

      Try something like this: Did you know that there is a rare bread of dancer-athlete that performs incredible dance on the ice? I'll never forget the first time I saw a live dancing on ice performance... the dancers glided onto the stage (on skates) and within minutes I was entranced, their red flowing skirts fluttering in the wind as they twirled. And instead of just viewing the performance from a stage, I was bale to walk around the rink taking in the splendid dance from all angles. It was breathtaking. At the end of the performance, the director spoke to the audience to let them know that this would be their last performance as they had run out of funding. You see, dancing on the ice isn't a well know performance type and doesn't get a lot of attention like the larger arts organizations. But it doesn't have to be like that, and that's why we are on a mission to preserve this unique and wonderful art form. That's why we are planning to build a dancing on the ice endowment and we are looking for people like you to help make this dancing on ice endowment a reality, so that future generations can enjoy this rare art form the way you and I have.

    Love you Sarah and you make compelling points. I think my perspective comes from corporate law. All companies have owners and boards are sort of the owners of nonprofits. All owners of corporations, including nonprofit corps, are responsible for revenue. The minute a board passes a budget they are committing to spending, but why shouldn't they commit to fundraising? I do agree that the equity considerations you raise are real. Thanks for doing this topic!!!

    • @PivotGround
      @PivotGround 3 года назад

      Great comment Sean. I actually did another training on who owns your nonprofit and I make that case that it isn’t the board. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this too. ruclips.net/video/2tHws6iQhYQ/видео.html

    • @jack.brooks
      @jack.brooks 3 года назад

      What I think is a much more powerful use of board members is to have them open up the contact list / rolodex. Ask them to introduce you so that you can control the message and the presentation of why you exists and why this new contact might want to align with you in some way. Much like when a friend or colleague puts in a good word with someone they know that you would be a good fit for a new role. Making boards (especially volunteer boards) responsible for anything is dangerous since this isn't how they make their living. Even in for profit boards it's generally a recipe for disappointment and a dangerous blame game when things don't work.
