I'm Mike, from Southern California, back from the dead. Join me for some fly fishing, guitar playing, mountain biking, and exploring the great outdoors... and maybe some occasional observations/musings. Thanks for checking in!

Upper Santa Ana River - Surveying Storm Damage & Fly Fishing
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.14 дней назад
Took a midweek trip to the San Bernardino Mountains to check out storm damage on the upper Santa Ana River from last summer's Hurricane Hilary, and to do a little fly fishing for trout. Date filmed: June 18, 2024
Spring Fishing in the Eastern Sierra

Take a trip with me to the Eastern Sierra for some dispersed camping and fly fishing. Lots of fishing, just not a whole lot of catching, although I did manage to avoid the skunk and catch my first trout of the year... a beautiful brown on a beautiful river. And finally debuted the mounted GoPro for some on-creek action. Good times!
Take 5 - Fingerstyle Guitar

The most popular jazz song of all time, written by saxophonist Paul Desmond and performed with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Chet Atkins made a solo fingerstyle guitar arrangement of it, this is my take on that.
Rollicking Ride - Fingerstyle Guitar

This is an original I came up with about 10 years ago and recently turned into proper fingerstyle. Inspired by a favorite mountain bike trail in Chino Hills State Park... the Bane Ridge Trail is a rollicking ride! Played at a campsite just outside Kingman Arizona.
Windy & Warm - Fingerstyle Guitar

The fingerstyle guitar classic written by John Laudermilk and popularized by Chet Atkins, from my campsite just outside Kingman Arizona.

Exploring Hole in the Wall at Mojave National Preserve

Dispersed camping in Southern California’s high desert at Mojave National Preserve. Exploring the Hole In The Wall area, hiking the Ring Loop Trail and the Barber Peak Loop Trail, and capturing audio of what sounds like a spirit or ghost while viewing the area’s petroglyphs! Beautiful, isolated, and well preserved, a great place to experience during the cooler months. I hope you enjoy the tour....
Those are dinks for that river wouldn’t even show them off😂
Well they were alot better than what I got on the West Walker so they made the cut. And sounds like you'll want to check out one of my upcoming vids on Green Lake where I show off one of my 3-inch brookies. 😁
Love your dry sense of humor. So many streams up there.
Well there is a certain level of irony in fishing videos involving catching no fish. :) Thank you and glad you like!
Hey MO, Nice Rainbow and Brown landed on the East Walker River! Good to see your enjoying your trip and some Epic camp spots! Are you going to give Buckeye Creek a try? Best of Luck!
Thanks Andy! Yes a super fun day on the East Walker. I did fish Buckeye Creek too but no signs of any fish, I do have some footage and I think the creek is scenic enough to warrant a video though. Really liked Buckeye Campground, not many people there at all despite it being the weekend. There's alot of free dispersed camping close by but I'm glad I chose the campground because apparently a nuisance bear was breaking into lots of RVs.
Brutal fishing. Hard on humans, harder on fish.
Hi there, is your camp spot east or west of Seven Oaks Road?
Howdy... that spot is east of 7 Oaks Rd...
@@MO_Lives thanks for the reply boss man. I was trying to snag a dry camping site but no luck due to the storm.
Hey MO, Thanks for the Vid and all the work you put in to get to the South fork! Hope your Adventures are positive in Bridgeport Ca! Looking forward to the New Vids and some Fish! Thx 4 all the Expertise! Andy.....
Thanks Andy! I still have some thoughts for you on Bear Creek so just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten, I'll follow up with you soon.
@@MO_Lives Hey MO, No Worries! Thanks for Sharing \'''/
What campground did you stay at? For a few weeks ago and the campground I saw was closed, looking for other possible locations to camp now that seven oaks is gone 😭
I camped at a dispersed site in the Jenks Lake area, but other established campgrounds I'd recommend are Barton Flats and San Gorgonio, both close to Hwy 38 and not too far from the stream. There is also South Fork campground but I think that may have been washed away too.
This part of the river looks souch better than the seven oaks area, that area looks like it was demolished, absolute devastation in that area
Totally... I think the 7 oaks area will become all brush-choked without the trees, but we'll have to wait and see.
Nice catching!
Thank you kind savvy!
Thanks for sharing. I didn't even know we had wild trout out here. I drive all the way to the Sierra to hike the backcountry and fish the wild trout. What 5' rod is that?
It's an inexpensive White River rod from Bass Pro Shops, I've been happy with it. And yes many SoCal streams have healthy populations of wild trout, they just require some work to get to.
@MO_Lives thank you and Happy fishing 🎣
It's amazing that they can survive those floods.
it really is... especially the floods filled with ashy water from fires
So many creeks so little time. Was just up there saw some fish but like you on the Owens they weren’t interested in what I was putting on offer and one day the wind was howling and the other day the alleged secret spot on the creek was loaded with other punters when I arrived and like you, was craving solitude.
"It ain't called catching, its called fishing" :). Upper O can be frustrating indeed. Makes the times when you do catch fish extra special.
@@MO_Lives there is no such thing as a bad day when you have a rod in your hand and walking the banks
Amen to that!
Good video and nice day on the water and in the forest. Thanks
Thank you very much!
@@MO_Lives Where is this in relation to seven oaks...further up stream?
Yes, the South Fork is upstream of Hwy 38
Fun story telling and editing! Thanks for showing it to us. Used to be up in Bear Creek alot many years ago. Spent alot of time in there until it got filled w gravel and all my favorite beautiful spots were filled.
Thanks & glad you liked it!
Chris I'm curious, when and why did they fill in Bear Creek w/gravel?
I don't think it was a purposeful event. I think there was some really heavy rains about 20 years ago and I haven't been back to bear Creek since.
I feel you man I’m happy as well too see wild brown spawning now 🤙🏻 hopefully these damn people dont poach them all
@4:12 if it is a stocker they just stocked them on 6/1/24
Probably caused by a pineapple Xpress or an atmospheric river. The area probably was swept, clean and will come back even better. It’s natures way of revitalizing.
This was from hurricane Hilary in summer 2023, although technically it was classified a tropical storm by the time it made it up here. Here's some info about the storm: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Hilary
“Off the schnide” 😂😂😂
schneid? lol thanks for watching brotha!
The cactus variety is on point.
Sharp observation!
