Making AREDN MESH Cables on a Field Deployment
During a field deployment we were asked to push live video for the command staff and evaluators to get a better view of the exercise.
We came prepared with the necessary equipment to establish an AREDN MESH Network with Real Time Streaming Cameras that could be leveraged to accomplish this mission. There was only one problem, we needed more network cables. A run out to a store or ordering them on-line was not an option, we had to make our own in the field.
A cold rain had been pouring on us all morning. These conditions made my fingers numb and stiff, making a seemingly simple task exponentially more difficult.
In WaveTalkers LIVE Episode 94: Network Crimp Kit, we walked through the kit tha...

    Don’t all the stations need to be on the same frequency for this to work?

    • @WaveTalkers
      @WaveTalkers 8 часов назад

      Yes, all stations in the digipeating chain need to be on the same frequency.

    Question, are all nodes stationary? Or can I pack up gear, hike somewhere, setup said gear, and connect to other AREDN nodes?

    • @WaveTalkers
      @WaveTalkers 8 часов назад

      Node can be moved to new locations. The trick with this is you need to establish a new line of sight fix on a node already on the mesh if you want to connect to the larger mesh. If you are going to create your own island chain of nodes then you just need line of sight between nodes. I've used this several times and simply had one node connect via a tunnel to a distant node to bridge the networks. very flexible.

    That HT does not support VARA FM WIDE. Better if you use VARA FM Narrow.

    • @WaveTalkers
      @WaveTalkers 8 часов назад

      Very true. Setting VARA FM to narrow would be more optimum for this particular HT. However, as I use a variety of radios with my Vara setup, and wide will gracefully fall back to narrow, I simply leave it on wide and cut down on the various settings that have to be changed when changing radios. It does take a little longer and if it becomes an issue it is easy to adjust. thanks for the feedback.

    I'm a fairly new ham who just got into Winlink. I have a Macbook, so I've been using Pat as my Winlink client, Hamlib/rigctld for rig control, and Vara running through crossover. It's been working great with my FT-710. Thanks for making all this great content!

    • @WaveTalkers
      @WaveTalkers 8 часов назад

      that is exactly what we have found. while they may not be ideal for field work, they are excellent learning tools to prove concepts and get someone up to speed for a very low cost. Transitioning to higher quality gear down the road becomes an easy upgrade once an operator is comfortable with the basics.

    The 90-degree antenna connector is a good idea.

    • @WaveTalkers
      @WaveTalkers 8 часов назад

      thanks, the biggest benefits I've seen with the 90 antenna connector are 1) the HT can lay on its back where it is most stable and 2) with BNC connectors it is extremely fast to implement.
