    Sam, I really enjoyed watching your interview. You were about the most likeable and interesting guest on these podcasts. The last time I tried to tag someone on these podcasts, I failed to copy the name, then I spelt it wrong, so I hope someone passes this message on to you.

    I can totally relate to Helens Mums boundaries. I ended up being so confused that my brothers could do whatever they wanted but i couldnt have a boy in my room. lol! Not understanding why was agonizing as it would also create resentment towards my mum.

    The idea of breaking a leg to get attention from parents sounds crazy. My family and friends' families are very different from this. When someone was injured, we were unsure of telling our parents because they would first blame and lecture us, then offer help and perhaps sympathize

    There are always some people who say that mothers do something wrong, and it pisses me off so much. These people criticize women for whatever they do. My mother gave birth to me when she was 42 years old. When she was pregnant, some people told her to have an abortion because she was "too old". I've never heard a thing as stupid as that one. Also, my mom was told by others that she wasn't being tough enough on me due to my androgynous appearance, and some even suggested she get me checked out by a doctor. Living in a small conservative town as an outsider can be a fun experience.

    Oh no, I love the 'princess Diana' hairdo (at least when he's performing his drag queen character), particularly with the light and dark contrast. Its the most striking feature about him, then the smile and red lipstick, then the eye lashes.

  • @helenahayes6150
    @helenahayes6150 5 месяцев назад

    @RobertChappl-vk6tb, sorry for the long delay. Here is an honest response. Just to clarify, we are talking about the sparkly fantasy character, 'dressed in heels and lipstick that preforms shows as a drag queen - not the guest. 1. So, what's the appeal you ask?. I'm someone who has always felt a bit scared of men - they are potentially violent.. Wouldn't want one living with me. But I can go and watch a man in lipstick and heels, and the whole threat element dissolves. (I don't even think it's to do with him being gay, its something about the make-up), Its a really pretty visual image. I then enjoy a male presence, a male voice etc. 2. He puts on an absolutely superb show. My 30 year old gay son only saw a girl - complete turn off to him. ABSOLUTELY refused to come with me to see Reuben's show when I visited him in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. (I got him there with a bribe). He is a quietly spoken, straight laced, conservative 'critical care veterinary surgeon'. He saw the show and had a complete change of heart. We had gone the night before to see his favourite childhood show WICKED at $250 a ticket. He said liked Reuben's show more. 3. Before one of his shows, Reuben walked into the audience space and interacted with as many audience members as he could. I stood back and observed these quite warm interactions, particularly with the elderly and most disadvantaged people, and at that point, I thought - I like him. On his side of the stage is his territory - you don't go there. During the show, you sit back and let him do his job. If you see him out in public, you respect his privacy. After the show (at least at the Adelaide Fringe show where I first saw him), he has this meet and greet session. That's neutral territory, but I still wouldn't go there. So, I just thought that stepping into our territory and making himself accessible was a generous and kind act. It's 1am on the morning. I hope that makes sense Robert. You asked me about negatives. Female audience members get ignored during his show - other than to be told he has no interest in them. My brain's interpretation - "this is a gay space - go away". I think I answered everything you asked. Nice to meet you Robert. 🙂

    My father also used to freak out if I cried in front of him. But instead of running away, he just said that he'd punch me in the face. Now I can't cry in front of other people and get really nervous if somebody is crying in front of me because I don't know what to do or say. So when people get emotional around me, I want to run away, but instead I stay and try to support them. Sorry for this long text. I just felt that story about dad running away

      Amanda is a great guest because she is the 'real person' that you know from your daily life and is immediately relatable. She is the office worker at my workplace who I drop in and have a chat with; she is a fellow volunteer at the soup kitchen I work with on the weekend; she is my kids teacher who I have developed something of a bond with, she's my neighbour who invites me in for a few drinks a couple of times a week, and she's that friend I feel brave enough to ask along to Reuben Kaye's show because she would pretty much always accommodate me even if its not her thing. And on the 'Come to daddy' podcasts she's really funny (actually I prefer a visual) in the way she lets Reuben know she has no intention of flattering his ego - that comment about not having to tell her parents what she does for work was hilarious. And she manages to creates a chemistry between herself and the show's host that other guests cant. Reuben's body language is more open with her, he leans into her, his tone is softer and more relaxed and that makes for a nice viewing experience at 2am in the morning when I have nothing better to do. On a different topic, what happened to that hug you promised me in Perth and never delivered on , before you thought I was trying to abscond with your glove after your show - 24 Jan at the Rechabite from memory (*grin*). @@cometodaddypodcast
