1989/90: BBC1 East, ITV and C4 lucky dip
A bit of this and plenty of that, ideal for anyone with a short attention span.
Apologies for the "death by 1989 generic ITV ident" in the middle of this megamix. Some of it is in the then shiny and new NICAM digital stereo.

5.15 Blockbusters, News at 5.45, 6.00 About ANGLIA - 11.3.87
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.Месяц назад
From the tail end of Birthday Club (which you can see in full on my channel) through to the end of About Anglia (via Blockbusters and News at 5.45) here's a chance to re-live a classic ITV teatime line up in real time, as seen in the east. Scroll to the very end to see a lovely rundown of that knight's programmes, almost done in EPG-style. Wednesday 11 March 1987. Tacolneston.
IBA Engineering Announcements 1989 (888)

Who didn't love an edition of Engineering Announcements for the radio and television trade? Tuesdays still don't seem right without them. Here's one I taped from early-ish 1989, preceded by a good blast of the overture from The Yeoman of the Guard. Enjoy a varied postbag, transmitter news, and details of two new relays near Carmarthen. Channel 4. Belmont. Subtitles on page 888.

Another ragbag of Anglia pres, probably not presented in chronological order. Again, see the difference between old Anglia, and new Anglia. Which do you prefer? Recorded from Tacolneston.

Odds and sods of Anglia, as seen at the tail end of the golden era before the advent of the hateful flag. Plus the start of hateful flag era. Oh and an early taste of a unified ITV look, which I didn't like either! Lady McDermott tells me she still has those ear rings. (Dreadful name drop I know, but you would if you could, wouldn't you?!)
TYNE TEES: Network North - Live from Bilsdale - opening titles

Date-wise, I'm going for June 1995, when Bon Jovi were in concert in Gateshead. That would also tie in with the fact I recorded this clip when I lived in Norwich, during an atmospheric lift which brought in Bilsdale on a baking hot afternoon. Network North (I seem to recall) was TTT's attempt to get even more local in the south of the patch, be it because they wanted to or because the ITC made ...

A typically enjoyable edition of the science and technology show, as seen on BBC1 around March 1987 (cannot be sure of exact date.) Learn about chequered paint, LCDs (they'll never catch on!) developments in smear tests, sewer flood prevention in Bristol, tamper-proof seals and work at Porton Down with regards to anthrax on Gruinard. A bit of everything, which was Tomorrow's World at its best. ...

Peter Woods ends the Boxing Day 1978 news on BBC1, and then fast forward to Friday 14 September of the following year. I seem to recall that 10.15 on a Friday night (when Points of View and the Burns and Allen show are on here) was BBC1's weekly regional zone in England at least... Did these shows only go out on BBC1 London and the South East while the rest of the Kingdom had its own programmes...

An all-too-brief clip of Anglia finally making it to air on 16 October 1987, the day of/after the great storm. While other stations/regions/transmitters were on air earlier in the day (see TV-am clips elsewhere on RUclips) I seem to recall that Tacolneston (and therefore Anglia) didn't manage to get back on air till teatime (around 4.30/5/5.30/6 - perhaps earlier, given what had "already starte...
THAMES junction - Kenny to Corrie - Monday 2 April 1979

From Thames, in colour, a 7.25/7.30 Monday night junction between Kenny and Corrie. I'm plumping for 2 April 1979, but may be wrong. The TVTimes listing for that night sort of confirms this, but I only have the Granada edition of that week, and Ted on the Spot isn't listed for being on Granada on Thursday at 9. Perhaps the northern station just couldn't face it and did its own thing. Who knows....

A lovely long link into Anglia's showing of A for Agnetha, a show featuring songs from the (then) ex ABBA star's solo album Eyes of a Woman. I seem to recall this show did the round of the regions at various times in c1987 or 1988. I also seem to recall Anglia's outing of this programme was on a Sunday night at 11.30. This may have even been the second time Anglia transmitted it... it was a lon...

Really odd that in the final days pre-rebrand Anglia had apparently become so unnecessarily embarrassed by their old look that they didn't use it at all outside of the clock, ident and production slide, to the point that their branding had become a messy mish-mash with various 'ANGLIA' captions in different fonts, alongside using Central's pseudo-corporate ITV brand on trailers and on the Telethon promo they had no branding at all...and then one of the few remaining bits of Knight pres complete with Handel's Water Music would re-appear for a junction.

Hannington using channel 66 for channel 4 caused lots of problems, group B aerials were always fitted before channel 4 came along, if the channel allocation was followed at Hannington, then channel 4 would have used channel 52, but it was already in use in an adjoining area, better planning could have helped prevent this.

Where would the Blockbusters episude be played out from? Norwich possibly? Most other regions were a reigning Blockbusters Mon-Sat however some regions had a reduced Wed-Sat pattern instead due to their preference for Emmerdale Farm or Sons and Daughters at 5.15 on Mondays and Tuesdays.. this. episode would have been shown on on Border, , Tyne Tees, HTV, UTV, YTV, Granada, Central and possibly Thames some months before and would have been played out to those regions by Central.? Would Anglia and the others have simply recorded that playout and stored it for play out at a later date?

Much preferred the version of the Blockbusters game board here, with the incomplete hexagons forming the border, than the later modified one with full hexagons. This one looked way neater. The new one also created a continuity problem with the refreshed opening titles, as they launched those around the same time as the new board and was always mismatched with the way it looked in the intro to how it looked in the actual show.

I don't think that NICAM answer was actually true was it? Every stereo VCR I used would down-mix the received NICAM signal to mono, so even the linear track would have contained the announcements. Switching NICAM off would have worked of course though. I know this for a fact with the specific Ferguson machine pictured, as when Bilsdale first went NICAM I had one of those machines. There were some technical issues afflicting Channel 4 where there would be loud glitches in the sound every couple of minutes - this was definitely recorded on the mono track on the VCR!

Tyne Tees really did have issues with those GVG mixing sequencers in the news and continuity studios - you'll note that both coming out of, and wiping back into the titles there was sound dropout - this was more prominent in continuity but the one in studio 2 was prone to it as well. Went on like that for well over a decade!

Re Network North... in the 1991 franchise round, Tyne Tees made a commitment to putting out a full half hour news bulletin at 10:30 each night. They already had a ten minute or so opt-out in Northern Life for the south of the area. Granada (who were bidding against them) countered this by proposing a separate main news programme for the Bilsdale patch. When TTT merged with YTV one of the first things to be canned by Yorkshire was this late bulletin. It messed up their plans for a common schedule and was considered too costly. But the ITC pointed out that this extra programme was part of a commitment to increase the regional hours put out in the NE. The compromise was to implement Granada's proposal instead, something that had proven popular in market research. But, the YTV proposal was to put this programme out on both Tyne Tees South and a number of relays and the Hull sub-region of YTV. They even moved some of the YTV news team to the new programme. This was nixed by the ITC quite late in the day and Network North was only ever shown on Tyne Tees even though local press advertised it as being on Yorkshire as well for quite some time. My suspicion is that YTV didn't give up on their desire to show the programme on some YTV transmitters and the promotion in the press was a placeholder. When the whole thing was abandoned in 1996, Tyne Tees then went back to shorter optouts for Bilsdale and the shortfall in hours was made up for by increasing the main bulletin to a full hour. The nearest they ever got to the original proposal came in 2001-2 when the main show was reduced back to a half hour, with opt-outs, and a lunchtime bulletin/magazine show "North East Today" was put out for a while (also with separate shows for Bilsdale). All of these were variations on a theme of fulfilling the original commitment.
