전라도일대에서 정월대보름 전후에 행하던 격렬한 공동체의 운동놀이 고싸움놀이는 흥미진진한 전술과 전략을 전투로 풀어서 상대방 팀을 제압하면서 우승이 결정되는 우리 전통 팀스포츠다. 정월 대보름 전후에 광주광역시 남구 칠석동에서 둥그런 모양의 ‘고’를 만들어 서로 맞부딪쳐 싸워 승부를 가리는 민속 팀스포츠 놀이 고싸움놀이는 우리 농경사회에서 나오는 나락의 지푸라기 새끼줄을 여러겹으로 모아서 만든 동앗줄로 만든 가장큰 짚풀공예품 중에 하나다. 1970년에 중요무형문화재로 지정되었다.
