What could our world look like, and how do we get there? For starters, envisioning where we can positively go, together, can crowd out the doom normally reserved for looking ahead.
A Bikepacker's Take on Energy (Pt. 1): Fossil Fuels, Power of the Past

I recently rode my bike from 3100 miles from Bellingham, WA to Greenfield, IN. One gets a lot of time to sort through the world around in the long, dusty stretches, and having completed my master's in energy systems, here are some (brief) reflections as I make my way across the country, amidst the many ways we generate and use energy.

Spend lovely time near this river-magical. Beautiful video 🙂
Glad to share a bit of that beauty here, thanks!
Nice video…
Much appreciated, thanks for stoppin by.
HELL YEAH
Ted, great seeing you and your mom tonight. Great video!
@@brentwatts222 keep on pedalin', and see ya out there down the line!
I would be interested to hear more about your experience with the wind industry, as you're right that I have more to learn.
Great work… keep on riding.
Much appreciated, looking forward to the roads ahead!
Nice reportage... But where were all the dead birds around those windmills?! 🍊🐘 😂
@@Ey_up Certainly can be an issue along migrational paths and in geographic pinch points, however, rates of bird deaths by wind turbines is about 1/20th that of fossil fuel projects climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/do-wind-turbines-kill-birds
@@Ey_up Thanks for watchin!
Giant diesel motors that leak, and toss that fuel AND oil all over the field or area the fan is placed in. Yuck. Put one in YOUR yard
@@lesgrossman3405 literally the point of wind energy is to not use fuel, so this is a moot point. though you're right that oil leaks are a possibility (an unlikely one, at that). Vs the diffuse and highly tracked fatalities that come from particulate matter from burning fossil fuels cross broad swathes of land, no thanks!
@@interpre_ted funny thing, when I was younger-I worked at a plant that produced the blades for these fans. They will never produce enough energy in their lifespan-then it cost to make them. Nice huh? Guys like you never state those facts-or that there are GIANT diesel motors on the insides of these fans. 🤣
@@lesgrossman3405 life cycle analysis states very differently. How do you feel about all other diesel engines? By your logic, I'm guessing you're anti-fossil fuel?
@@lesgrossman3405www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301421513003856#:~:text=Wind%20power%20has%20a%20high,3). The Energy Return on Investment of wind turbines is 20:1 on average. For every unit of energy used in production and installation, 20 units of energy are harnessed. So all that work you did multiplied 20x--thanks for adding to productive energy economy, Les!
@@interpre_ted you can post whatever links youd like, it does not prove that the fans you worship, ever produce enough energy to recoup what was used to make them.
Quality of life trumps environmental friendliness in my opinion. I agree that “renewables” aren’t quite there yet and I’m all for more development on them. Not funded by taxpayer dollars in any significant way until renewables get to be practical in efficiency and being a net positive with their environmental footprint. (I.e. I don’t think that destroying forests, farms, and natural habitats for solar fields is a good thing). I do think that cheap and available energy is the most effective way to bring a prosperous world for everyone and that it shouldn’t be an either/or situation with fossil fuels and “renewables” at the expense of quality of life.
@@joshrakestraw5580 Thanks for a thoughtful addition here. You're right, that change of quality of life for the pursuit of environmentalism is a pipedream. However, the diminishing returns of increased energy use on quality of life is steep, so each unit increase of QoL comes at a much higher rate of energy use. I typically agree about natural space preservation over destruction for renewables. I don't believe it must be an either/or, however. There are cool combos of PVs and farmland called agrivoltaics which can even increase yield in some instances. Many wind farms actually allow farmers to be profitable when they otherwise would not be. Finally, cheap and available energy, a la coal, oftentimes leads to a DECREASE in community health and wellness (see the whole video), which means net decrease in prosperity.
Lol. Everyone is a yimby until you actually have to deal with miscreants in your back yard. Stereotypical biker
@@Jjjbbb5678 I'll keep my eyes peeled for the miscreant gardeners, cyclists, and people who care for their neighbors.
