Whereas we appreciate the inability of majority of Ugandan farmers to constantly meet international market orders, there is need for business players (especially middlemen), to appreciate that they can no longer do business with the same methods employed hundreds of years ago, and expect different results. The unfair market practices associated with middlemen offering prices below production costs incurred by farmers, has adversily impacted agricultural growth. Majority of these farmers (incidentally including some commercial farmers), do not keep records. As such, they only realise they've made losses after failing to meet subsequent farm input expenses. The said unfair practices ential buying agricultural produce so cheaply and selling it at a premium, with no realistic income generated by farmers to meet their farm expenses, personal needs, and also save some for commercialisation and/ or diversification. The emerging social entrepreneurship ventures are slowly but surely taking root. Those that are well intended have and continue to address the current farming bottle necks accaisoned on hard-working farmers by unscrupulous middlemen. This approach is based on the understanding that; - farmers are a critical component of the farming value chain, - farmers are supported to secure farm inputs whose associated costs can be recovered at reasonable interest rates, upon harvest. - farmers are supported with extension services to guarantee quality produce. This also entails value addition at farm level through appropriate post-harvest handling techniques, transportation & storage. The above approach may seem a tall order for middlemen who are hell bent on cashing in quickly, but if you desire your business to live through generations, building a robust social structure, based on business integrity is no longer an option.

The real problem is government wanting to reap reap and no significant targeted sowing. Tax collection not supporting business growth. Overtaxed population. Low equity and equity. too few people bearing the burden and too few enjoying the tax money.
