1/350 Enterprise A Ian Lawrence Tribute Build Episode 4
re-watching the episode the only blinking light I see is on top of the saucer section, and it's a red light on the rear of the Naselle, with no blinker and nothing upfront. In the official drawing indicates that the right side should be green with you addressed. But as far as I can see from re-watching and zooming the episode, the red light should be on the rear and solid. Am I missing something?
No your not missing anything if you watched all the build episodes. I usually mention if I'm doing something different from the studio model, but a may not have talked about why I did those lights different. For example I explained why I chose to do a red impulse engine instead of the studio model blue.
@@theensignschair yeah you said the front red lights not the bussard collectors but the ones on the top, the navigational markers were on the studio model, but I don't see them in the episode. likewise I tend to tone down the blues in the paint job trying to work correctly capture the look of it on the screen, why are usually differ to that. You mentioned not using the Raytheon effect on the rear registry markings, but it doesn't look like they have any illumination except from the nacells :-). I have the blinker board, but I don't think I'm going to be going for anything that I can't see, personal preference. well it's conceivable that the navigational lights were damaged in the battle, I choose to avoid the work to wire them up in the name of screen fidelity :-)
@jeffkleist9679 I could swear I talked about why I did those lights like that because I remember mentioning that those rear nacelle light were actually red on the port side and green on the starboard side.
@@theensignschair you said they were on the studio model, and there is a little plastic pump there for them so it's possible they're there and they just didn't turn them on in the end, maybe they didn't look right or photograph correctly, which may be the reason they were removed when a revised the model
@jeffkleist9679 I have photos of the studio model from the previous owner. But to answer your first question, I did the lights the way I did them to be more in line with the lighting on the Enterprise B and the Enterprise D, it just didn't make sense to me that the Federation would change formation light schemes, then revert back to the previous formation light pattern. Of course there can always be in-verse explanation for everything, this was just my point of view.
I wish one of the TV stations would play the shows again as reruns! Let’s promote that!
Tamiya Insignia White is a good "starship grey" I used that on my millennium falcon. ArmyPainter Gun Metal might be good for the neck.
How could a PG-13 rated movie being considered the most violent movie ever made?
I had no idea it was filmed in Las Vegas! My grandparents lived in Ocate, NM, about 40 miles north of there. I spent many a summer in that area. Oner of the reasons I loved Longmire was because it was filmed near there.
Looks like a fun build! I built the NCC Excelsior a few years ago, and I just received the Lake Monster Blue Trim for the NX.
Congrats on the Bronze! and alot of the models chosen by fine scale modeler are on their website including your War Rocket ! as of a few days ago, I hope you saw!
I have not seen it but I will look now! Thanks for the info!
@@theensignschair Yup you are officially famous with some of us lucky souls!
Heya! The Auxiliary Sensor Scoops were modelled after a reference picture of the Studio Model as vit was in its damaged state. Thomas Sasser who originally created the Master decided to incorporate this feature on the NCC-1701-A. This is a non canonical feature and is only representative of the filming model in her damaged state! I have some of the preliminary photos as the Master was Continuously revised prior to the initial production run.
Ah, that is interesting, thats in line with what someone else had said. Thank you for that bit of information!
ST VI shows torpedoes being launched for those spots on the front
The lower openings yes, not the upper.
Hello Robert. Those to ports that it looks like you're point at are in fact the photon torpedo launchers. In VI, you can see the torpedoes coming out from those holes, just in front of the registry banner Delta insignias. No reference materials indicate there are any windows in that area. The upper square ports, on the ribbed neck area, could be doors for loading torpedoes/probes. But are also referenced as "additional" torpedo launchers. LOL, typical of Star Trek details.
Love the new parts that Round2 made for the Excelsior. Also are you getting one of those big resin printed kits?
I have a 1/537 Enterprise B already.
@@theensignschair Excelsior looks nice.
@@theensignschair out of interest is Lake Monster still going make the parts for Kronos one, mainly the bit that covers the rear torpedoe tube.
Cass is working on the application instructions now, should be out soon!
@@theensignschair thanks.
Looking great so far. Love that ship too. Cant wait to see more! Keep up the great work!
Just a note, I didn't catch before I processed this video, when I mention 1/537 Refit, I mean the 1/537 Reliant I'm about to start.
Love this build I'm currently building the Enterprise 537 refit build and I'm looking for some good quality aztec decals. I checked out G-cals, but I don't think they have any for my ship. Do you have a recommendation on a good set?
Gus does have Aztecs for the 1/537 Refit, I'm not sure why they aren't on his website but message or email him and he will get you set up with some.
Don't you have a 537 scale Excelsior class as well?
I do, an Enterprise B in 1/537
You should try painting the neck in gunmetal and then give it a black wash, I think you'll like it. That's how I have always done the necks for the Excelsior, and it looks spot on to my eye.
Gunmetal is one of the colors I'm considering dry brushing which should achieve a similar effect!
Great video.
I visited Desert Center today. It's still the same, the buildings are still there, only more graffiti on the walls.
Sir, What about the intro that started with the mountain, forest and river (example) Shown on the screen in September. That's where you took it from courtesy. Thanks 🙏
Hi buddy! I must correct you a bit! The led strips in the neck, you didn’t wire them in “series” it’s in parallel buddy! In series, you take the positive lead wire and solder to positive connection and the negative connection goes to the positive of the second and so on until the last negative connection it’s wired with the negative power lead!
I've always referred to linking led strips in this manner "in series “, it's still the same principle. Parallel would require each strip be wired separately to a positive and negative power wire, these are not.
Good update. Maybe I just didn't see it, but thought there are two LEDs/SMDs (one P & S) at the base of the neck that point upward to light the neck? Thought I remembered seeing that tech. from Boyd's build. Only mention it as you are trying to figure out a way to light that area by building something into the bottom of the saucer. Was not even aware of that lighting kit for the photons.....nice affect!
There are lights at the base that offer some illumination of the neck, but not the spotlight, you can't get the right angle from there to replicate the spotlight effect on the neck.
I also like the forward observation windows. Too bad it wasn't incorporated into the actual filming model and not just the set. Be a throwback to the forward windows on the TOS. Looking forward to seeing more of your progress.
That was my first impression seeing those 3 windows, reminded me of the 3 on the front of the TOS Saucer, though I think those were actually sensors.
Looking great! Love the way that forward lounge window looks. Even without the light on, you could see the wheel, which was cool. For those pieces around the deflector dish, I'm with you there. When I do that on my A, I'll be using the rounded ones, too. I have heard that the weird ones were used when the models original pieces went missing, but I have had a hard time finding the pictures of them on the model. Most close up shots of the A all seem to have the rounder ones anyway. Either way your model is looking great and I can't wait to see more.
Thank you, I was hoping I wasn't going crazy!
Nice work! Just watched the original last night.
I liked Airwolf more than you did, but that's pretty gay. btw, I made my own 800 size Mi-24 Hind fuselage, and bam.
Well done Will! Great job!
Thank you!
Really helpful to see how you fitted the arboretum windows. The build is coming along nicely so far! Also it's nice to see a build with the new Lake Monster hangar bay; all of the build videos I have watched so far use the longer version, which is good and in fact is what I intend to use, but I hope at some point in the future to also build the 1701-A with the shorter hangar.
I may still build the longer shuttlebay, all the parts are available including the photoetch so why not! I can use it later as I have another kit on the shelf for the Refit.
Glad to see you back at the -A build, I am enjoying it. But why is the video reversed? Never mind, I see that you just said why about the 8 minute mark
I'll have it fixed next video, it was a weird set up because I'm redoing some of the shop such as adding the model shelf in the background! It was just easier to flip the image for now.
Thanks for the update Will. She's looking really nice.
Thank you!
Nice vid, very informative! I am building the refit and a little ahead of you since you took time off for the war rocket. IF I built this kit again, I wouldn't use the PE for windows. Too many complications come in when trying to fit in acrylic/plastic from water bottle to make the windows. The thin PE makes a fragile joint right at a place where you are tempted to grab the secondary hull to work on it. Always at risk of popping them in - ask me how I know. I redid both of those secondary hull windows due to joints popping. Yours look great from what I can see, but be careful. I smartened up and covered the windows with thin cardboard once I got them set. I used sheet acrylic for the windows...much clearer than the water bottle or similar plastic. Takes more time to get them to shape, but worth it. You will need some give in the sides of the secondary hull to make a good fit with the top (strong back). Fit the fantail only after you have dry fitted with the top in place. From what I can see the fantail can be positioned slightly lower or higher and if you do it incorrectly you will have a slight step where it meets the strong back. And yes, the plastic putty does a good job with the inevitable seems where the sides come together. Curious, what made you go with the shorter shuttle bay setup?
Definitely a great point with the PE arboretum being a weak point. I used the shorter Shuttlebay because that's what the "A" has, the longer shuttlebay is in the Refit.
Worst replica, ever.
Brush some uv resin over it, it will help a lot. I've seen many modellers who use resin water use it to fix bad pours. Ps: the Galley is the kitchen, Gallery would be a better term.
My goodness that's incredible!!
Hi Will i know Andy (Innerlights) in fact he's not very far from me and his lighting system is awesome going to be putting it into my last ever 1/350 Refit build over the winter looking forward to seeing how you do with them in this model and congrats on the bronze for the warship
Andy is a great guy and the Inner Light system is the best lighting system I've seen! I was really impressed and surprised how competitive his pricing is. Looking forward to ordering and using it!
@@theensignschair Hi Will i am still working out how it all works i hope you show a little of how it works
Looks like it's going to be a very interesting set of videos. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks Will.
Great review, Will. I cannot wait to see your progress on this. Definitely take your time. Maybe Jonathan can provide 2D schematics from his files in order to make sure any Aztecs you create, will line up to this casting.
Since he's part of our group now I'll ask!
Hi new to the channel , Heard what you said about the Aztecing issue their is a possible answer for you if your interested ?, Aztec Dummy does make both versions at 1/1000 scale I know because I have both kits at that scale they are basic if you had files or even the kits it would help you to no end better than starting from scratch , I know Lou helps where he can give it some thought , good luck it will be an interesting build & you can scale the aztecs to fit .
That is a good idea, certainly at this large of a scale more detail would need to be created, but it would be a good starting point for sure!
@@theensignschair Glad to help where I can, I would also ask that when ready I would purchase 2 of you masking kits for Excelsior I realise this will take time but the ships aren't going any where for now .
The things! You know, the THINGS that make the stopped ship go! Love the content!
Lol, getting old sucks!
I told you I'd be here! Great job on keeping the grin off your face for a whole 5 seconds during your intro BTW. (Also, I am not at all jealous!!!) There is obviously going to be a lot of work on this but you are taking the right approach by taking your time and you have been honing your skills steadily - I am confident it will be a great result!
Thank you for the confidence!
Looking forward to your progress on this! I've got the Helios kit on order so will be nice to see other Ent-B builds first. Oh and you definitely deserved gold for that War Rocket!
Thank you! I requested a Helios but didn't hear anything back after a while, plus it's way more expensive for a smaller model from Helios.
Wow. This command center is out of this world. There’s even more nostalgia I’m getting from it than the ship itself.
Wow she's huge! I guess I never realized the size of her compared to the refit. She's going to be beautiful when completed.
You should see the 1/350 scale version. Lol
I saw the 1/350 Excelsior that was on display
Back in the 80s the dream kit we never got was a 1/537 USS Excelsior model. If you were fortunate you could get a resin USS Reliant kit conversion and a vacuum formed USS Grissom in 1/537. I see Marshall Models has a 1/350 USS Excelsior model now too... Woof! 😂
Very cool. That looks really great. I want to get my hands on his 1/650 Enterprise-E. I look forward to seeing your progress on this, and I'm looking forward to seeing your continuation of the Enterprise-A.
That 1/650 E is nice and the best thing is Paint Masks for it are available from Mask Design already!
@theensignschair Yeah, that's cool that those are all ready available too. When I get that kit I will definitely have to get those masks with it.
Not a big fan of the B but I'm intrigued to see what a 1/537 build will look like.
Yeah I'm a bit odd I guess, I actually prefer the Enterprise B design over the Excelsior.
@@theensignschair either way the B will look spectacular when built.
@@theensignschair I never liked the 𝐸𝑥𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑟 design in general, as I think it looks ugly, lacking the grace of the 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛. But I too prefer the 𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒-B variant over the original 𝐸𝑥𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑟 design. The 𝐸𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒-B looks like a more robust and functional ship, compared to the 𝐸𝑥𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑟.
what about Patriot Rock?
My research indicates it was a prop for the movie but I was unable to confirm that due to the fires. It would be up around Johnson Mesa somewhere.
@@theensignschair It would be great if it was real, looked like real rock. If it was real, the signatures would be there hopefully.
I saw your build at Wonderfest over the weekend and I was blown away by your work. Really has inspired me to try and print and build this sucker. Great work, Thanks!
Thank you! It's a great build so good luck with it!
It's about to happen with Chinese aggressors coupled with illegal immigrants
This is an Awesome Vid
Looks fantastic. on to Wonderfest!
I think martin bower would be pleased
