Bensonwood
Добавлен 6 май 2020
Today, while Bensonwood is still known for its exceedingly artful timber frame homes, it is widely acknowledged as an innovative builder of hybrid and non-timbered, panelized homes as well.
Through its custom fabrication of highly insulated and finished panelized assemblies and its Open-Built® strategies that make the home flexible and adaptable to the owners' needs over time, Bensonwood has become acknowledged as the premier designer-builder of energy-efficient, high-performance buildings across the US.
Among these are two LEED Platinum-certified, Net-Zero public buildings in Maine and Vermont that create as much energy as they consume, and a Passive House in Vermont requires no furnace.

This is awesome! Looks like a great project. It’s a shame those beams are going to get covered up, they look great!
I think wood is a outdated material to use in construction. prefab concrete walls would be better. my opinion though
Timber is a renewable resource and sequesters carbon. Concrete is the exact opposite, which is why the building industry is trying to use less of it. Plus flat packing concrete walls would be mad heavy…. With that being said there are new companies using concrete walls, look into 3D printed houses. Icon, out of Austin is doing some cool stuff.
This is where id want to work
Absolutely phenomenal!! How many trucks to bring this house to the assembly site?
😅😅😅hauptsache die OSB Platte kommt bald mal an die richtige Stelle. Innen!!! Schön zu sehen. Das habe ich vor 25 Jahren auch schon so gebaut.
Been watching a number of the Unity/Bensonwood RUclips videos lately, but I am curious why I never see anyone rolling the zip tape. I understand this is critical for proper adhesion of the pressure activated adhesive. Also I would expect to see the little imprints of the zip system logo on the finished tape but don't see these either in the closeup views of installed seams. So how does Bensonwood/Unity do this step in the process? Of course you could be using another mechanism to pressure seal like you probably doe with the Sega products that use a small plastic spatula/squeegee device.
what is the approximate cost per square foot vs stick built on site. $300 square foot? or higher? it would be in southern maine
The scope of work we provide typically doesn't cost even half of that number, but we are just one piece of the pie. The local GC costs (foundations, site development, building systems, and finishes) can all vary considerably with the location, design, finishes and complexity. We help customers evaluate their building plans for affordability - so please reach out at info@bensonwood.com
Awesome!
They are now requiring a blower door test for new construction, at least where I live. We used Zip-R sheathing and Zip Tape plus closed cell foam in wall cavities and passed with a rating 75% better than the passing threshold. Would have done even better if I had remembered to plug the bath and range hood fan vents. This was a surprise to the tester, as he said many tests he's done had failed with other new homes in the area. Running around trying to figure out where the leaks are must be a bitch without spending a few grand to have another contractor out to use an aerosol mist to find these hidden cracks.
~ Well, I guess that you won’t find any Empty Modello Bottles in those Walls ..... Ie ie ie...
I wonder if a wall panel could be built by the homeowner
The big question for Unity/Bensonwood is whether its assembled SIPs can be Passive House certified. What is its blower door test air exchange result, both ways?
Excellent video!
Wow! Nice work Tommy and crew. And great video work also Tommy! It was fun to swing by for a visit when you guys were putting that up.
It must be so awesome being on this jobsite and having everything going up so fast! Air sealing is such an after thought on so many jobsites its great to see a company doing it differently!
I was thinking that the concrete contractors you work with must be amazing for your prefab work to all line up. It make so much more sense to measure the foundation work and adjust the model. Brilliant!!
Great time lapse! I think I would categorize this more as a hybrid home where the exterior walls seem to be traditional 24 inch on center ballon framed construction but the important interior details are timber framed for the unbeatable ascetic and beauty. This seem to fit with Bensonwood honoring the craft and still embracing technology!
WOW the amount of engineering, planing and detail that you have designed into your process is incredible. This is so much above and beyond where the rest of the industry is. It is no wonder your homes are not even comparable to the traditional stick built American home.
Other subs must love or hate working on your jobs. I am sure you work with outside contractors that are extremely detailed oriented and enjoy having all the studs pre-routed and laid out perfectly
This is a really beautiful video. After years of working in residential construction this put into word everything that I wish the industry was. The honor for the crafts person and the materials really is what makes these special projects possible! Restoring the honor and true art in the trades is more important than ever! I want to be part of a company like this making positive change!
Really awesome to see all the projects you guys are working on. I found you after seeing your amazing work in Portsmouth and I was extremely impressed! I am even more impressed by the good your doing in the community and your long standing employees!
Its really amazing that you could organize all these local rock star businesses to do something like this! Great work and congrats on having a work place where people care to make positive change!

Love this overview!
Bensonwood Homes - do you ever lay the plywood on the roof so the roofer doesn't have to cut in for a ridge vent ?
Bensonwood Homes - with your houses what do you use for exterior wall studs ( 2x8 etc... )
Probably the most efficient construction method that I have seen. I'm considering using Bensonwood Homes for a lot in Sapphire, NC. I had been exploring a 3D printed home but I think the Bensonwood construction process is much more advanced at this point. The lot is heavily wooded and I want to retain as many trees as possible. I also want to avoid the traditional concrete foundation due to radon and termite risk as well as rainwater incursion.
I have about 40 lots up in the Balsam area..Im a builder but like these pre fabs. ! Can't find enough labor in field anymore. Let me know if the work out!
Can you tell me where you learned about radon in foundation?
Brilliant! So inspiring. Stick framing has to stop.
can you send info on the german claw?
how long does it take to fab in the shop tho? That should also be factored in the building process. not just the onsite building.
Was University Pines in Lubbock Texas your product? Thanks
Who does the onside shell build? Bensonwood, a Bensonwood selected contractor, or a homeowner/GC selected contractor?
Bensonwood installs the shell and we work closely with a local general contractor.
An energy efficient home or business is more comfortable and saves money in the long run. Solar energy on your roof combined with battery storage can make people more independent from the grid and natural gas supplies. Add solar and supplemental electric heating or a heat pump for home or business heating.. All big box stores and manufacturing sites can support solar energy on their roofs or parking lots. Added insulation, double or triple glaze windows, energy efficient doors, energy efficient heating and cooling systems, energy efficient appliances, LED lighting, smart thermostats, solar panels combined with battery storage and a electric vehicle charger in the garage or car park. People are too focused on the short term costs and miss out on long term savings and comfort. Blower door testing and air sealing are under appreciated tools.Even if you have money to burn you should not waste it. Climate Change will impact everyone. Leave a better future for your children and grandchildren. Join in and speak up for the future of the plane
And who's going to pay for all this... Got to make sure this stuff is affordable too for not only the upper crust of society but everybody🙏🏾
I agree. I want to construct a 1600 sf "smart" home with a low impact building method and from what I have seen so far, it appears that Bensonwood is the best choice.
Energy efficient home is not saving the planet brother.
@@johnnichols2710An energy efficient home can save you money on monthly utility bills and will be more comfortable.
How do you protect the timber and other wood from termites?
This system is mind boggling. I’m so impressed by the thought that goes into this.
It would be nice to learn more about those SIP panels they look unique.
Thank you for sharing and congrats to the Milestone Anniversaries!
Very classy!
You make the world a better place. We're celebrating our Bensonwood's 18 year milestone and couldn't be more delighted.
Amazing company and great Team. Enjoyed Many projects with the beam Team over the years
I wish you were in western Canada!
Here’s to the pioneers! So glad to see your work in Texas. Happy Holidays!
Looks like a system that's well thought out! We are searching in NC. Mountains for a supplier...
