I also owned a 1980 Omega Brougham. Brought it new and the mechanical problems started on the drive home from the dealership. It had an undersized piston, the AC never worked properly, the rear brakes locked up when braking hard, and the four speed standard transmission shifted like a pickup truck! I never imagined Oldsmobile would build such a poorly constructed car. It was nice looking but so INCREDIBLY UNRELIABLE!

I have the same car, but it's not in use now. Even it's compact size and front-wheel drive it still has the original american car feeling. They have really durable and reliable mechanical partswhich could last for more 20 years for sure. Not like the plastic parts, which starts to fall apart in some places. Your engines has a really bad sound, you should check it, it should run almost noisless when it's good.. Even they are designed so that they are still useable with major problems. This is a 1980 Omega Brougham. You can tell by the waterfall grille and the "solid" taillights with the Olds emblem in the middle of the lens. The '81 had a vertical bar running down the middle of the lens. I had an '80 Omega for 5 years, from 1987 to 1992. I bought it from a Long Island woman who married into money and didn't need it anymore. It had been babied and only had 30,000 miles on the clock. I drove it 40 miles per day, back and forth to grad school, winter, spring, summer and fall. It was the most reliable car I ever had. Nothing ever broke, without advance warning. The car had the 2.8L V-6 and it felt stronger than the advertised 112 hp. I often thought that someone had slipped in the V-6 from the Citation X-11, which made 130 hp. I used to chirp the front tires and I outran BMW 318i's and 325e's of the time regularly. Despite the X-car repuation for brakes that locked up, I NEVER had that problem. I got rid of the 80-series tires and slapped on a set of Goodyear 185-70R13 raised white letter tires, and the car looked and handled great. I sold it in 1992 because the power steering pump failed, the transmission was getting balky and the interior was falling apart. It was 12 years old by then and one of the very few '80 Omegas still on the road at that time. I will never forget that car. It had character.
