Foraging Oak Galls and Making Ink
Welcome back to the studio as I learn how to make Oak Gall Ink!
For this video, I experimented with both a steel wool/vinegar solution and traditional Ferrous Sulfate (known historically as Copperas) to see how the results would differ. The steel wool/vinegar solution had a greeny-brown undertone compared to the blue-grey ferrous sulfate ink. When swatched alongside the raw oak gall ink with no additives they created a beautiful selection of colours that were very fun to play with! The ink with the ferrous sulfate produced the nicest result for writing with a dip-pen, alongside the raw oak gall ink which has a beautiful ochre tone.

Making recycled paper with a D.I.Y Mould and Deckle
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
Hello, how are you today? Come on into the studio as I build a D.I.Y mould and deckle from a recycled scaffolding board and the resulting paper that it makes. I hope you enjoy watching :-) This project was very rewarding as it allowed me to use up lots of scraps from around the studio as well as dusting off the old faithful circular saw. The resulting paper is very rustic and perfect for those ...
Casting a Pewter Wax Seal
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.3 года назад
Join me in the studio for some relaxing pewter casting, as I learn how to craft a wax seal coin. Delft casting pewter is a relatively simple process which makes it perfect for a beginner foundry. This process was a lot of fun to experiment with and I thoroughly recommend that you go forth and try it too! Caution: Be sure to melt your pewter in a ladle or saucepan which will not get used for foo...
D.I.Y Pottery Kick Wheel
Просмотров 28 тыс.4 года назад
Over the last few days I've been working on a D.I.Y Kick Wheel made from two bowl blanks, a broken broom handle, two flanged bearings and some timber from last year's studio build. She's a bit rough around the edges, but once you get your leg into the swing of things she's pretty good!
awesome video and thanks for the great book recommendation, I can't wait to check that out. I'm in southern California, and our coast live oaks and valley oaks are full of galls, but I think they have lower tannin concentrations than other more temperate oak species. Excited to try it out and see what I get
I knew I had seen these before, but I couldn't picture them in context. Now I know what to look for again. Thank you!
God I hate this way that hipster's make videos
Nicely done
I made my mould and deckle before I found your video. I love every second of it. Now I need to make paper!
What kind of nib are you using?
Excellent
Truly wish you had made more of these I loved watching this is was so calming
Wow that’s a great simple recipe for a few bottles of oak gall ink. How long do the collected galls keep in storage? Do they do well frozen for storage? I am just getting started with trying to make my own inks. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information!
I've kept mine in a cloth bag in a cool dry place (my closet) for more than a year and they're good still 😁
@@moss_bones thanks so much for answering my questions.
What? Very misleading in what is actually happening.
nice job
How did someone figure this out…it’s insane to think someone was just like yeah, rusty metal, vinegar, rainwater, and wasp galls- let’s do it! 😮🤯
Is it only this kind of gall that can be used?
I'm enchanted with your video and love your pigment experiments collection. I live in central Texas and have a huge oak out front that drops galls every winter. I love using fountain pens and have entertained the idea of making iron gall ink. Thanks for some inspiration and encouragement. Stay well.
Wonderful! So skillful & precise 🐝🌻
I deeply admire your videography and style of experimenting and presenting. I, too, find it peaceful. (Also, very satisfying. ) 🐛🦋
thank you, dear soul
A very cinematic video and a beautiful casting idea, I really like it. You can try a similar cast with zinc next time. It´s a lot cheaper and also low melting ca. 400-420°C
Just so beautiful and relaxing to watch. The sounds, the light, the devotion. Hope to see much more of you!
That is amazingly simple, just so clever, and the downblouse part was such a cool twist, like I thought it was just going to be woodworking video
Yeah you definetly broke your back trying to use that lmao nice project tho, maybe you can do it a bit taller or put it higher
I saw the lino cut tool and thought, "wait, what?" A really cool way to get the seal shape set up!
Very well done. 👍🏻 You must have awesome parents!
Amazing❤
Very uncomplicated not to much frames here and there brilliant.
That was reakly relaxing to watch, thank you !
This is really awesome, im gonna use this video for inspiration when i build my pottery wheel, but im going to add a pulley system to the very bottom maybe with a flywheel cuz i feel like my leg would get tired lol
Hello, thank you for the artful lesson. How did you treat the paper to prevent bleeding when you wrote on it to say 'thank you for watching"
Nice try video. 😊
Your videos are amazing !
your videos are delightful!
Why don't you use gear motor that is very easy don't use ft why you waste your precious energy
Saw your studio in In Her Studio magazine. I could spend hours in there, looking at your charming collections and creations.
This is a fantastic video! Keep up the great work!
Random odd question: Is the pewter capable of making a heat stamp for leather? If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the help! Thanks!
how cool is all that
Great video, thanks for making this :-) 1st 2 Links are no longer working.
so inspiring to see old traditions kept alive! Love your vibe! blessings xxx

I wish you start to post videos more often. Loved every little thing in the background and how everything seems so organized despite being unorganized. Bottles, jars, the wall accessories, the things on your desk everything just look perfect.
where do you get ferrous sulfate?
a little advice please don't repeat the 2:07 mistake use a vise or clamp..☺️
I had to pause the video and I was thinking the same, I'm glad she didn't get injured!
