For big production drywall, yes, paper tape with regular mud and banjos and bazookas. For small remodeling jobs like a single bedroom, no. Rather mesh tape is the way to go. Because for such a small job where you are going from raw sheetrock to finish wall paint, if you use the paper method and regular mud with a full day’s drying time between coats it will be a week long project. However, with the same small bedroom - drywall to finish paint - you can use mesh tape and hot mud - 5, 20, 45, or 90 - and be completely finished, paint and all in a single day! That’s my take anyway.
Im looking at s franchise now for drywall restorarion and another home restoration
Feel free to contact me if you'd like more information about how you can avoid the high costs of a franchise.
What instructions?
First time doing this, I used 45 minute. Simply make small batches until you get comfortable. You may toss a couple but you'll get it... just think of it as a learning process. Remember, life's a joke we all die in the end. Your project may seem daunting but it can simply be scrapped and started over. Another reason for another case of beer. 🍻 Lastly, dude you're so eloquent in your production and delivery, I got the Silence of the Lamb vibe. Emmy award for production and breakdown. 😊 Thanks
Thanks for the feedback!
Mitch, compound recommendation question: So where I live we can mostly get USG products from the big box stores. For a diy'er project that i feel i did a very nice fit up job hanging the drywall boards with very little gaps, nothing over 1/8 inch gap to fill, Would you recommend using in order: (1) All purpose compound for taping & screw covering. (2) Plus 3 compound for each additional coat after taping all purpose is dry? thanks!
That sounds like a great plan to me!
your suppose to embed mesh tape into compound just like paper tape....most dont know this will only mesh tape a small patch....everything else is paper
Thank you for this information! However, were those joins pre-filled prior to this particular demonstration? Thank you.
No, you can prefill with topping before stringing tape.
How do you determine to use topping or hot mud? And if you use topping wouldn’t it still need to be done in two trips?
Hot mud is for anything that you need to do in one trip. Topping is for larger projects and yes it has to dry overnight to sand.
thanks for the video
This doesn’t help considering he’s not actually using a rough angle in a hallway as reference on how he made a perfect angle this is just okay made up angle from this point to this point marked it and cut it
One of the dumbest videos I’ve ever seen didn’t even show how to do anything
So no waiting for tape to dry first?
Definitely not necessary.
shits weak
Is the mud prep before application?
Taping mud is AP mud thinned down.
Never used topping on cover passes. Humm. Is this gonna be weaker?
Topping has been used forever and has not had an issue with strength.
You may find this hard to believe, but of the thousands of beginner mudding videos on youtube, not a single one actually shows what the consistency should be. Thank you!!!!
Most of the points are not valid... for example... the tape is embedded in to the joints, unless they are the cut ones, then, true... but, just cover them... and dont sand much. For those, better the fiberglass tape that is not mesh, as it is thinner, but really, not worth the bother - that one is more for repairs. About cutting the tape in corners.. you are using regular blade, but you should be using a corner blade. Truth is, mesh might not be as strong, but then again, it is good to prefill everything other than well done factory joints. And, the work goes much faster. However, as you have invested in the mechanized application, i can understand your position.
Very good instructor help a lot
Flip your tape around it’s coming out backwards.
He makes it look easy. I'd be screwin' those taped joints all up. lol
Why u using drywall and regular mud in a shower?
Super video! Thanks for posting
Quality product
Do you sell Good Humor Ice Cream after the show?
I’d like to know how to cut drywall to fit a wedge shape. Or to taper down (the actual drywall depth tapering, not cutting a straight line at an angle).
Mesh tape is for shower board and most don’t even use durarock anymore. With that said paper tape in steam showers and tight bathrooms where a lot of moisture accumulates fibafuse is a good option but chances are if you have tape pulling in a bathroom you probably don’t have proper ventilation or the ceiling should be painted in a less porous paint. So full circle here back to tape lol
that uniform is classy as hell
Spectacular presentation, thank you so much.
I used the metal one for years. I know you're demonstrating but I filled with my hand and could make it smoke
do you texture the patch and paint it, or does someone else do that?
Yes, I take it up to paint ready.
No paper needed for metal bead?
Nail on cornerbead does not require tape, IMO.
if you mix a bunch of air into your mud you will get a ton of air bubbles. I have started just adding water to the mud in the pan and mixing with the taping knife.
Drywall instruction do you still offer training?
I am offering a Business Plan. Feel free to contact me @ 541-408-5763 at your convenience to discuss.
Do you not wet the tape
No need to wet the tape. Your taping mud is runny and plenty wet.
Never run both sides of an angle at the same time. Never. That's how you end up with undercut.
What did you use for your first coat of mud?
After the tape is on topping is ideal, softer to sand. Where topping isn't available LITE All Purpose is the next best option.
I appreciate the video. I have tried both and prefer the outcome I get with paper. I figured it was just me, so it is nice to see some logic behind the differences I have seen with both types of tape.
What I find incredible is that a drywall hanger and a drywall finisher are two different jobs. Like a cook who doesn't bake.
When buying "hot mud" do I look for joint compound? Is "hot mud" slang for joint compound?
Hot mud is a powder that when mixed with water sets up quickly. It's sold in a bag.
@@drywallinstruction1766 Thank you! There is nothing in the hardware stores by that name (hot mud) and I can only assume that it is joint compound. Hopefully that will work.
@@silekiernanphotography Sometimes you can find 5 minute hot mud at Lowes or Home Depot. Otherwise you'll find it at a drywall supply.
@@drywallinstruction1766 I'll keep looking, I tried both Lowes and Home Depot and nothing called "hot mud." I will try next time I am back there. Thank you.
Great video thanks so much
I wish I could find somebody that would take the time and go through every step and show the finish product. Seem like editing would make that easy.
Hello Steve.
Mesh: MUST use fast drying compound on first coat! I use mesh for everything except corners. Mesh is great because you can do all your joints at once and don't have to worry about bubbles and tears. Paper is great because you can use pre mixed compound for first coat.
Clear and concise, thank you.
amazing video
What about fibafuse?
Try running all your butt joints first
