is it fair to assume you just connected the wires to the same lugs in the replacements? its been a bitch finding a wire diagram to call out the polarities of the wires
The rear seat DOES have to come out to secure the woofers correctly. These are subs and need to be sealed in the enclosure to perform as intended. Albeit they are HORRIBLE subs and should just be removed anyway
Very very great idea!! I did something similar with a tweeter install in the rear deck of my Pontiac Grand Am, but instead I ran a zip tie from the top of the holes in the grill so the grooved leg went under, than I used a second zip tie's clip part to hang the tweeters from the rear grill. Then, I put two subwoofers in the trunk and ran the signal for the factor sub to the subs in the trunk, and the factory signal for the tweeters to the tweeters I hung from the grills.
Thanks so much for posting this video! My 98 740IL speakers were toast just like yours, and after watching this video, i went and got some Boston acoustic 5.25" speakers and did the same thing with the rear deck and door speakers (Doors are 5.25" also) so i just got 8 and did them all. It sounds SOOOO much better. Very helpful video! Its always good to watch a youtube video before getting into a project, just to see if and how other people have found is the easiest way to do it. Again, Very helpful! an hour from start to finish and music actually sounds good again in the bmw! Cheers!
@brucejohnson Looking to do this to my dads 2001. Did you need to purchase any adapters or was everything plug and play as far as connections go? Thanks so much, RB
Bav Sound has replacement for about $350

very helpful video. i was under the impression that the rear seats had to be taken out
I actually thought of a better way to secure the speakers. Just use zip ties.
The seat DOES have to come out to screw them in and do it correctly
