I make a lot of visual art, and have for my whole life. Every other artist has had a period, usually in middle school/early highschool where they dabble in making art that directly represents their emotions, with VERY cliche and obnoxiously common symbols (e.g. a mask about hiding their true feelings). This film felt like that - someone **just** starting to articulate a basic deep-ish thought. This is totally fine to explore through his journey as a film maker, but rarely does it ever have a butt ton of money going into it. I think it has promise of good cinematography, e.g. good shot composition and colors and whatnot, but the script was equal parts stupidly pretentious and abysmally basic. I fear art is dying

I gotta agree but also this was way too short, and I’m not sure if that’s for a lack of finding supporting evidence. I was surprised every time you brought up a section, because it cut off the previous one, which felt very unfinished. You don’t really talk about the film at all, just broad parts of it.

you sound very upset. and even though im watching the video i can't figure out why you are so upset. at worst the movie seems mid but you are not really explaining yourself well. I dont think this guys movies are destroying cinema or anything. You gotta be more specific with your critics cause it comes off as a bit pretentious to say a elementary school student is making peak fiction but me as an audience member just has to take your word for it.

This video gives off jealousy vibes. Lets be real, films don't have to be life changing to exist. And just because you aren't the target audience of a movie doesn't mean its a "shitty movie" as you put it. I personally am not interested in the movie but to make a whole video disbaraging on a film that someone put hundreds of hours into is just pretentious. Just remember that hating on someone who has direction in their life will never make you better than them.

don't get confused, folks. comparing an amatur short film to 2001: A Space Odessey, claiming that "there's a right way to make cinema", calling out the creator for trying to make it into hollywood and succeding because he is "a bad filmmaker who shouldn't make movies", saying that a short film "looks too good", calling everyone who likes it an idiot then blaming tiktok for the downfall of cinema is NOT, in fact, pretentious. so is calling an elementary student's stop motion short "pure cinema" not pretentious at all, especially if you host an amateur film festival, which makes you qualified to make that call, as well as to gatekeep the true art form that is short films that are being posted on youtube. but a very popular, charming and by all means imperfect piece of amateur filmmaking that is enjoyed by millions of people IS pretentious, because a rich teenager dared to make it. all art is objective, all people are morons and this one guy is actively ruining movies by making likeable movies. i hope there's no confusion now that you've read this, be careful out there!

I kinda just got the vibe that the video was made by someone who really wanted to make movies, but wasn't willing to put in the time to learn how to write a good story. This is a ubiquitous bridge that every filmmaker must cross where they must learn how to write, but this guy had the ability to bypass the skill check because he had a lot of money. I think that the VFX are adequate, but I think that they suffer from a lack of creative vision. If you believe that creative constraint breeds creativity then you probably would also understand that since he has money, he once again could bypass that. It could also be an issue of wanting to see his own whole, creative vision without understanding that other people who have their specialties are going to be better at specific things than what he is. VFX specialists wouldn't slap a bad filter on the video, but if he kept full control, it could easily happen. It also could have been a misallocation of his budget. He might have gotten a full film crew and rental, but he didn't have a real story to tell. Obviously whatever story he wrote would have to be somewhere he has access to, about a subject he thinks he knows something about (dumbass college student nihilism). All that said, I think that it is unfair to judge this video as a competent movie when in reality, it is an average student film. Honestly, it is probably an above average student film - some student films are abhorrent and unwatchable garbage, and this was not that at least, though, when I watched it, I clicked off after 30 seconds despite guessing 7. That said, most student films I wouldn't even dare click on. I think all the things I said before are apart of why this film sucks, but I also think that it was a very good attempt for someone who probably has never done it before. This is his film education visible to everyone. He is obviously arrogant and pretentious, and no director in hollywood makes it if they do not understand emotion and presentation thereof. EDIT: On a completely separate note, there is a little bit of an understanding that hollywood does want their directors to make at least one movie on their own that is of adequate quality before they hand out the keys to the bank account. This probably was intended to be that film for Wang.

The movie recently got taken down, I’m guessing because of all the copyrighted music in it. If that music was being used legally tho, it should probably go up again soon. Hopefully it goes back up, because no matter what I think of the movie I still think companies being able to abuse the youtube copyright system is bullshit.

I think the main reason people liked it that much is because it's posted on youtube. I mean we don't see such high budget cinematic short films made exclusively for social media, not a film festival. And the audience being mostly teenagers who haven't watched many movies compared to short-form content, it felt like something different. Just a theory

The fact that you're a filmmaker who has spent precious hours of your life ripping apart somebody else's film solely because of what I imagine is envy is so disappointing and embarrassing. "20 year old makes pretentious short film." Duh. That''s what you do when you're 20. You don't have the life experience to make something truly deep and nuanced but there's a willingness to try. The only thing that you hate is that this guy had the money to make his movie look better than you could with yours and that negative energy is what will be your downfall as an artist. Maybe Wesley Wang got the keys to a Ferrari too early but that's for him to figure out. You focus on what you have, not publicly shaming somebody who probably worked their ass off to make a thing some people like, even if it was with the help of a budget.
