I am a career artist living and working in Duluth, MN. The interplay of humanity, technology, time, and the natural world are the through lines of my abstract expressionist artwork.
I earned my BFA at NMU with a specialty in ceramics. I have pieces in the permanent collections at the University of Michigan, a painting sculptural installation at the Oakwood health system in Dearborn, a large public sculptural installation at Portage Public Library, and finished public sculptures for the Battle Creek Public schools through the W.K. Kellogg Expert in Residence program. Many of my pieces are also in private collections around the world.

Arrowhead Art Club Mixed Media Artwork Workshop Recap
This past summer, I had the joy of teaching a two-day workshop using Royal Talens products. We loosened up our creative muscles, pushed our materials to their limits, and then finished the work with mixed media safe fixatives.
But I have to confess, without Kristen there (she had other work keeping her busy), I made a tiny videography error... Specifically, I forgot to hit the RECORD button for the entire first half of day one. Yep, just me, a camera, and the bright red button I didn't press. 😂😐😩
Keep an eye out for footage from future workshops. I swear, next time I'll hit record and/or bribe Kristen to come along! (Word on the street i...

Love. Great style. Technique.
Much appreciated!! Thank you for watching!!! ☺️
What paper are you using? Is it canvas paper ?
Cobra has a specific paper for oil paint! It's super cool to work with, available in major outlets. Thanks for watching.
Lame
Thank you for your feedback
What is the material you are painting on? What are other mediums you are using on this piece?
Thank you for watching! It's just soft pastels, water on a water resistant 1/4" plywood. The particular board I get at the neighborhood lumberyard is some of the best texture, finish I have worked on. I wish I knew what kind of wood it is! Be well and thanks again.
Love these videos !
Thank you so much!
THIS IS SO COOL
Thank you! It was pretty fun!! 😁
So it’s a bit unconventional, but …. If you keep a small bottle of rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol and soak the nib in it before you put the cap on…. It makes the nib stop from drying out…. I paint houses and also do graffiti 🙏🏾
Great information!! Thanks for sharing!
Acrylic ink is for canvas only, they even make a protective clear coat for it. What you need for the streets is xylene or solvent based ink, although nothing compares to the anti buff bleed through power of xylene. Smash ink, illadel ink, marsh t grade, that’s all you should be using or else your tags are just going to wipe away first try. All acrylics from graffiti brands are water based, that means all it takes to remove it is water. If you use xylene based it will bleed through the paint and usually the first layer of the surface itself, you have to actually remove all of the original paint in order to remove a xylene ink tag that has been done right. Learn how to vandalism properly. This marker isn’t graffiti inspired, it’s literally a graffiti tool, the question of “is it for the streets” is answered this way: Does the empty marker body say acrylic on it? If it does that means it was only intended for use with acrylics and solvent based inks will destroy it, making it a canvas only marker. If the empty marker body does not say the words acrylic on it, then it is likely intended for solvents, and is definitely for the streets.
Great points and so true! Thank you for sharing!
I love your art. Thanks for sharing your process!
Thank you so much! Much appreciated and thank you for watching! Be well!
Did you varnish this art piece? If so, what did you use? Thank you!
I have not varnished that particular piece yet. Many times they don't get one unless I need to protect them more. For oil paint I would use the same as usual, probably Rembrandt or Cobra brand. Thanks for watching!
Actually 2 faces on top of each other.
Thank you so much for watching!!
At this point, the right side of the castle looks like a perfect face. Beautiful eyes.
Oh! I will have to look at it again with fresh eyes!
I'm watching and this is looking amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! We appreciate you watching it!
Love this. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to watch it! It's always fun to play with the material. This morning I am trying more techniques to see where it may lead. Be well and thanks again!
Sorry I couldn’t be there! This is what Picasso did!
Thank you! It's often artists are drawn to multiple media for expressing their concepts I believe. You know my mantra, Create without fear! 😄 Be well and thank you!
Perfect for tags
True 😁
Something wrong with microphones
Yes, this is true. We have had problems with sound and picture. Part of the issue was the Restream service we use, which hopefully is finally resolved. The other part was the transition in the split screen didn't keep the sound on when we put up the class notice. Sorry about that, we will keep improving. Be well and thank you for watching.
No problem I will look forward to your other videos
Please get yourself a *_lapel mic_* - your art content is *brilliant;* you're being let down by very poor, echo-laden audio, unfortunately.
We absolutely agree! (And thank you) We have mics but they just don't seem to work well so we need to purchase new ones. I have to generate some more money to get it done. 😁

David as a "brand new never took an art lesson ever " artist, is there any item that cannot be used to paint with? Do i need water on My canvas first with acrylic? Do i need to draw lines fiest as you do What's the lines for? What is luan board ? Is luan board sellable or is it practice boards?
Hello! Welcome and thank you for watching. Use what you have to create, the goal is just to #createwithoutfear. I will try to answer the other questions as best I can. You do not need water first, I just like the effects I can get sometimes. Lines are not necessary, it does help get me started, also adds to layers, depth in a painting. Luan is a plywood which is certainly good for a final painting to sell. There is better plywood than others. I work on a 1/4 inch that handles the wet better than most. I can't remember what kind of wood right now. I buy from the same old lumber man. 😁 Less water resistant board could delaminate and curl a little. I hope this helps a little. I cover a lot of this in other videos and live sessions. Stay tuned!
Why are you drawing lines first? Is it a geometry pattern?
Sometimes I start with lines to loosen up other times to help with blocking the composition. Many people use light pencil lines before using water colors too. I add black lines often in my finishing stages because they are all around us! Like power lines, shadows and branches in the forest.
R u painting on Wood? It would be helpful to newbies if you can tell what type paint and canvas your doing on videos. Like acrylic mix with water or medium etc. wood panel or canvas. I like it alot ❤
Thanks for watching! I often paint on wood. Sometimes raw canvas, paper, stretched canvas, primed and unprimed. Sometimes I use acrylic with medium and without. I work in many materials. My main goal is to #createwithoutfear second is I focus on process more than final product. Especially while working through new content. I really want to be in the euphoric meditative creative zone as long as possible. I hope this helps, be well!
Sound is awful so is the camera shots to far away you need better sound. Other that that I love your work fun stuff
Yea, sorry about that. It is a recorded live video from the other day. Sometimes the internet connection drops on us during a live show contributing to moments of bad sound and video. Our other videos are usually better. Thanks for checking us out! Be well
can't really see detail very blurry
Thanks for checking it out. I did just scan through it and you are right, some parts are fuzzy. I would guess it had to do with the live streaming issues. Thanks for letting us know, we will take a look at improving the feed. Our regular videos should be much better quality. Be well!
😢sir i need this pens😢
It's charming in a way I can't fully articulate
Thank you so much! It's been great to work a little with clay again.
I love this song so much, memories lol
Absolutely! Thanks for watching
Cool. I use traditional oils without solvents and no cadmium. I use walnut oil to clean brushes and thin paint.
Excellent! I love hearing how others create!!
Do you have a website I could check out? Thanks for watching!
@@PaintWithMeLiveI am unable to leave a comment with my website?
It seems to be a new thing. Someone else had an issue. You can try direct a message.
lindo 🤩👏👏
Thank you!
have you made any pieces with spray paint?
I have actually, mostly using Marabu art sprays but I have played with Liquitex and randoms. There should be some videos in here somewhere, particularly the lives... 🤔
Very cool, would love to see an entire video of you painting these.
Thank you! I will have to go watch the video again to see what I was doing! 😁 Much appreciate the watch, be well!
Thank you.
Am i using the wrong stuff? I put acrylic paint in my pen but i don’t get those cool stripy lines. Do i need ink instead? What kind of ink?
Great question! I use acrylic inks from Amsterdam Acrylics. The nibs can clog easily if there is any charcoal or soft Pastels you are going over that is why I use Degas Fixative in their more expensive spray bottle. Three thin layers usually works.
Try using molotow one4all paint, it's made for markers and is almost like an 'acrylic ink'
@@giginewt great idea! Thanks for the tip!
@@giginewtdo i need to thin the one4all for my squeezer
Ha! The title is wrong, sorry about that, no stamps on this one. We will try to correct this 😂
im surprised the pigment doesn't clog the nib.
The potential for clogging is there. I use either a dye based liquid watercolor or Amsterdam acrylic inks in them. The main thing I have noticed is if left for awhile, even stored with the nib down, the nibs will dry out! Thanks for watching
love this! what scraping tool did you use at 25:50? it creates such a great effect! ty.
Great question! I would have to review the video but I think it would have been a normal plaster knife. But the key would be the surface underneath the canvas. It's like doing a rubbing with a pencil and a paper over some texture. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing this video, is that all acrylic and charcoal? I love it! I am watching your videos they are pretty cool. , Good luck , cheers !
In this case it's all acrylic. Sometimes I work in Tempra paint and more recently, I have started using Cobra water mixable oil paint from Royal Talens! Thank you for watching, hopefully new videos will be uploaded soon. Be well and #createwithoutfear
It is a real pleasure, fascinating to watch you paint and I truly love you Art! Thank you for sharing 🙏
Thank you so much! Much appreciated 🥰
Awesome lovely thank
Thank you!!
Amazing art and sounds
Much appreciated, thank you!
Try living in a Van.... Creating and trying to sell your art on the road. 😂😂😂😂 That is my challenge.
Oh my! Yes, that could be an issue. Certainly over the years my create space has grown. It's interesting because several years ago we considered doing the RV art travel thing, but instead put down big roots here in Duluth! Be well and safe travels!
@@PaintWithMeLive thanks. You too.
Why not sell a few? I see one I may like if I could afford it.
Ha! Indeed, I love to sell them. I am on the look out for my representation for sure to keep up with me! 😁 Screenshot the one you like, maybe we can work a deal. Be well and thank you.
@@PaintWithMeLive There are actually two very large pieces I like. Are they on canvas and what medium?
@@yaranpaupore2041 Really depends on the piece. I paint on canvas and wood board as well as paper. I generally use acrylic, pencils, markers, charcoal, inks and other mixed media. I have also been back using oils since Cobra came out with the water mixable oils! If you could get a screenshot of the pieces you are interested in I could definitely tell you more about them. Thank you for your interest. You can message through the web site if you wish. davidaustingallery.com
I’m so glad I found your RUclips, it was great talking to u tonight, but the connection wasn’t great. I’m excited to watch the whole live!
Thank you so much!! We are glad you found us too! 🥰👏
Hi. I have been thinking about getting them, but I wonder, since they look so creamy, I worry they go out fast! My Neocolors II seem to last forever. But these Marabu seems to be more plastic package than actual product. Am I wrong?
Thanks for the question. There is a lot of package. That being said, if used thinned with water they will last a lot longer. It's kind of like working with watercolor. I tend to use them when I travel because they stay neat and convenient. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.
