Matthew Bannister had a job to do but change could have been phased in gradually instead of just throwing the station into turmoil and losing half the listeners virtually overnight, only the BBC could afford to do this, a commercial station wouldn't dare risk losing half of it's audience.

Not liking dogs seems a pattern with these kids though! I think they are too cautious, anxious and read other people too much, they do have a lot of empathy i noticed also!

Bannister missed a trick, he could have had a monthly cull completion , I'd have voted every month for sure, with the result, sacking and splutterings live on air.

All those sacked DJs had reached the end of their shelf life. Simon Bates even admitted he'd had a good run and couldn't believe he hadn't been dismissed earlier. The idea that their replacement destroyed radio 1 as we knew it is laughable. Technologies did that.

Simon Bates actually announced to a newspaper that he was leaving Radio 1 before Matthew Bannister fired him, he planned that before the axe came down on his Radio 1 job much like DLT announced his departure from the station live on air ie basically they chose to jump before they were pushed.

Well, I am a dinosaur if you like but very much alive and loving all music. Happily I remember when Noel Edmonds and Tony Blackburn were on in the morning and used to laugh ourselves senseless on our way to work! Such a great way to start the day! These guys were great at entertaining as well as giving us great music. Egos seemed to be less of an issue then, or better controlled perhaps. I'm always sad when great talent is sidelined by executives who think they're God. I'm very happy listening to Sounds of the Sixties and l LOVE BOOM RADIO!!!! I'm 74 btw...still dancing and love new music too but where to find it is a mystery to me...lost in all this tech stuff which seems to be the possession of the young mind unwilling to inform we dinosaurs....imho. I loved this video, it filled in gaps for me!! I'm in Australia .

It was true that mothers used to listen to Radio One. I hated it except for the charts. I couldn't wait for Radio Luxembourg to come on at 7pm. My mother could never quite manage to tune Luxembourg in so Radio One it was. Even calling 160 dial a disc on the phone was better than listening to Radio One.

Radio 1 ignored American grunge music in the early nineties but around 1993 MTV played Creep by Radiohead regularly and they were British but it could get no airplay on radio 1. This is why the station needed to change and get away from the dinosaur mentality

Loved Radio 1, got me through some boring times in the truck, loved Our Tune with Simon Bates especially and can remember Evans being the new dj. I'm sure one caller said to him that he was told by the telephone staff not to upstage him, when this was mentioned to Evans he wasn't very happy at all. I can remember the live shows from seaside towns (usually) as if it was yesterday. Didn't realise these older dis were classed as dinosaurs though as I thought they were brilliant and I was early 20's then...

I sometimes used to listen to DLT in the 80's on Radio 1. All DLT's show actually was, was an extension of his huge ego. I will never forget one episode when he was playing his stupid snooker game with the phone-in contestants and he asked the male punter how tall he was, the punter said 5' 10'', Travis replied with: "I'm 6' 2'' myself. In fact, while listening to Travis, I knew his height, chest size, shoe size, to mention just 3 metrics. An ego worthy of Trump.
