Cemetery Restorations by History for Liberty
США
Добавлен 17 сен 2021
History for Liberty is interested in the preservation of all things related to Bedford County, Virginia and its county seat once known as Liberty City. We created this channel to share some of our cemetery restoration projects. These include anything from cleaning markers to clearing plots, as well as full on headstone/grave marker repair and resetting. We are 100% volunteer and see it as an often forgotten way to give back to the community (and it's ancestors.) Beyond repair and restoration we are engaged in a county wide information cemetery resurvey to be compiled on an in progress website. Bedford County has thousands of small family cemetery plots in varied condition, age, size and even some which have been lost to genealogical memory. Our goal is to catalog these for ease of location of descendants and other researchers, as well as adding to the wealth of historical knowledge. Perhaps this channel will be a medium for sharing some of the history we encounter as well.
Jones Family Cemetery -Christmastime reset and updates
The Jones family cemetery dates at least to the 1810s or so and is a tight plot a stones throw from the original Jones homeplace. The plot sits in an active cattle pasture but is fairly orderly and a chain link fence was erected enclosing at least the known marked burials. Today the cemetery has been expanded and is an active burial site.
This was an update on the progression of monument resets.

Marking off suspected burials at Jordantown
Просмотров 223 месяца назад
A short visit to Jordantown with some small helpers to start to layout the many depressions and burial locations marked with fieldstones only. There are 5-6 rows each with a number of burials, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 100 in this presumed older section. Internments here likely include antebellum slaves and likely are predominantly pre-1940s if not earlier.
Woods Family Cemetery: Initial visit

A short hike to a very early burial ground in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Peaks of Otter in Bedford County, Virginia. Nestled between Sharp Top, Flat Top and alongside Polly Woods Ordinary is a Wood family cemetery dating to over 200 years old. An interesting plot that shows both inscribed and uninscribed field stone, rock walls surrounding plots and highlights the importance of carefully obse...
Another Jordantown Cemetery Visit

A third pass through this historic plot in Bedford County, Virginia, locating another 1940s era funeral marker with a viewing pane. A total of 40 markers have now been located, 30 of which are legible! Finding legible funerary markers of this age and style is quite unlikely and a blessing to be able positively identify a location that has otherwise quite likely been lost to history.
Thomas Family Cemetery: 2 years post restoration update

A couple three years post total cleanup and monument reset, the plot with simple mowing continues to be neat while requiring less than 2-3 hours of total annual maintenance time.

Summer 2023 Project: Anthony Rucker Family Plot - The Final Headstone Reset

Video highlighting some strategies being used in the resetting of a traditional die-in-socket type grave marker. This marker belongs to Elizabeth M Rucker Reese, who was born in 1819 and died in 1906. As seen in previous videos her marker was wholly buried, but was still tightly set in the socket. We excavated, lifted out, backfilled, removed the tablet from the socket (it was fully loose but s...

September update with a few steps left to complete at the William Thomas plot.
It's not right to let a cemetary reach this level of neglect....
It's a remote land locked plot with some fascinating history and a burial ground that may go as far back to the late 1700s. It is neither a family cemetery, but isn't purely a community burial ground either. It almost has more commonality with a traditional community church burial ground...except there isn't any unifying church, or anything at all other than an ancestral tie to the land itself. Thus as it grew and descendants and relations passed, maintenance likely fell on fewer and fewer, and simultaneously descendants of the interred largely left the area for Roanoke VA, WV, PA, MD, DC etc. Seemingly without a comprehensive caretaker - there are no known records, and while I trust many (not sure how many...) know a few folks were interred here, its likely no one knows even 5-10% of who is here and its also likely the handful who may know dont even know each other - again there are family links beginning in the first half of the 19th century, but many lines from there. It is an enormous space - humbling to be in - but as far as plots go it itself is under a good stand of trees and fairly clear actually. We are hopeful to improve the knowledge of and compile who may be interred here and reset some of the known markers down.
That was amazing
