    Not mentioning everything here what I watched/read in January, but a broad stroke of the most important of them: - As for books I read the “Southern Reach” series. The theme of the search for objective truth and the inevitable failure to do so, combined with cosmic horror told from a scientific point of view, makes for a compelling story (even if some of the installments vary in quality a bit) - So it is no surprise that I also rewatched Alex Garlands “Annihilation”, a soft adaption of the first book. It lacks the fluidness of the original story, comes across a bit stilted, but makes it up with dreamy landscapes and one of my favourite endings. I like it a lot even with it’s flaws. - I finally had the chance to watch “Kneecap” in a theatre, which I am glad to have experienced it in it’s original language (Thanks Germany for making it that hard). And it was so energetically fun, the best film I watched this year if it weren’t for - “World of Tomorrow” by Don Hertzfeldt. I beg everyone to invest only 15 minutes of spare time to watch this short animation film. It’s filled to the brim with unique ideas and comes across so *so* heartfeld. Everything that science fiction should be. - I could also experience “The Brutalist”, which was a great film where I couldn’t feel myself into. - “September 5”. A movie I feel truly neutral about as well as “Mulholland Drive” and “Memories of Murder” which were on the other hand both terrific. - Lastly for the shows: “Kleo”, which was incredible to look at, but really bad in it’s writing. Sadly another case where “german” implies not of good quality; at least it dared something with genre. On the contrary the hairdesigner for the show gave their absolute best in coming up with the most hilarious and atrocious looking hairstyles, I love it! - And then there was “1899”, which I watched for the umpteenth time and- I hate it with a passion, meaning: there is a *massive* amount of love for it, but I just can’t overlook the massive flaws it has (still a big fan of the show though and sad about the cancellation) A bit on the text-site, but I guess that happens if one doesn't like star-ratings, oh well! The most I look forward to is “Severance”, which I will only watch after it comes out completely, so I don’t have to pay for two months of Apple TV+

    Nice collection of media. People say KCD 2 is very very good, so your timing to play the 1st one is on point. What i watched in January was Alex Garland's "Civil War"(loved it) and then immediately his prior TV series "Devs"(liked it but limited in budget) that features 4 actors from the Civil War movie. As well as Dune Prophecy (good casting, okay-ish show), Trap and Megalopolis (wanted to give megalopolis a fair chance against the smear campaign- ended up hating it with a passion by the end).

    If Fujino's teacher never asked her to go hand out Kyomoto's diploma in person, neither of them would have met each other. Consequently, both of their lives would run their course. Kyomoto's fate would have been the same, and Fujino might never have realized her vision of a serialized manga. Funny how a single event in time can alter our future so dramatically.

Worth hearing each version since they are all fantastic. Songs are: * Amen, I'm Going Somewhere * Apology Letter - The Good, the True, the Beautiful *Walk (don't know artist)

    as a die hard Naoko Yamada fan, particularly of Liz and the Blue Bird, i was a bit let down by this film. However i do believe the onus of this is more on my own expectations of a emotionally potent drama, and not of a warm slice of life film. it was still beautiful, and i teared up at the final scene, but as a lover of intense drama, it just wasnt for me as much.

    honestly my biggest critique I have about this film is that we didnt see enough of the world through totsukos eyes. Its a beautiful movie with lots of colors and yet i found that i still wanted more. and i also get that the lack of background music was intentional, but by the time we got to the end it made the big performance seem kind of stiff, as for the majority of it theyre just kind of standing there playing. I would have loved to see an extremely colorful sequence at the end there, maybe giving us some memories these friends had made along the way. the songs were absolutely banger though and overall it was magically animated with very well thought out characters

      I felt the same. I was thinking how creating music can be so special when it helps define life events. But if there aren't any events, then music is sometimes just kind of "nice." It's so powerful when memories are attached. So hey, want to make a band together?

    Just saw the movie tonight. Your review really helped me organize my thoughts on why I enjoyed the movie so much but couldn't put into words. Like you said, this movie was nice. Good vibes in all the right ways, and I loved how the subtlety was expressed through the details and not told directly to us. Also not everything has to be a dramafest and that normalness made this unique in a genre full of drama that wants to take you on a rollercoaster. I loved that comparison you made to enjoying a sunrise because that's one of my favourite things to enjoy. There is nothing extra special to it, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful and a representation of how colorful life is (literally).

    I pretty much agree with all of your points. This movie is very, very subtle, relying on the audience to catch onto things without them being spelled out. I was too caught up in the story to notice Yamada's signature framing, but that means she did her job, drawing me in without seeming to do so (just as she drew me into Liz and the Blue Bird). I really adore the way this film handles small "worldbuilding" elements that would be explicit in other movies. Kimi's brother is a ghost on the edge of the movie, rarely even being mentioned, but having a huge effect on her. Sister Hiyoko's few lines about her childhood at the end seem like your typical "I was in a band once too, so I totally understand you guys!" exposition to make it clear why she's the "cool" adult... but that one little line "I wish I could erase that time" throws a wrench into that simplistic interpretation and makes you *think* about everything she has said and done, and how her religious beliefs influence how she sees these kids. Rui may not have much screentime, but that moment when he sees Kimi and Tatsuko after months apart and runs over to hug them, literally jumping for joy that his friends are back, says so much with so little. In all honesty, I can see this breaking into my top 50 favorite movies ever. And I have seen A LOT of movies - thousands. It isn't quite Liz and the Blue Bird (a contender for my favorite movie ever), but Yamada has now proven herself as one of the masters in the cinematic space. By the way, that Christmas night scene was also my favorite part. I loved how personal it all felt. No big dramatics, just people opening up about small things that have accumulated gigantic weights on their shoulders. The silence of it all is so powerful. Yamada and Yoshida just letting things breathe.

    This film is stuck in my mind because it wasn't a movie that tried to make me cry, but during the final performance, I was holding back tears and crying the whole time. There is something about this movie that just made me understand when a story "moves you to tears" simply because of how beautiful it is.

  • @AniTunesXYZ
    @AniTunesXYZ 15 дней назад

    @5:45 Yes. The lack of BGM/subtle use makes the ending performances REALLY stand out. A well thought out film. And I agree the film didn't try to make you cry, but that performance at the end was so beautiful and just thinking of what went into the decision to handle music and sound that way got a few tears out of me. A film definitely not for the battle shonen crowd, but a beautiful film nonetheless. One of my favorite of the year. Awesome review! And I bet everyone and their mom will be googling "theremin" by the end of the weekend.

    I just saw this today and I knew it was gonna be good because this is a director that knows how to tell a story. It's not just how it looks or sounds, it's how it feels. The different yet similar dynamics between the 3 leads is so much fun to watch grow as the movie progresses. Even the side characters have a sort of progression as well. Kylie's singing is again spot on during their band's performance too as well as finding the heart and soul of her character. Your review is spot on too.

    I read the manga before watching the movie, and i think the second half (or the twist) is the weakest part in both. I felt the same way about Goodbye Eri too. Both works begin with deeply compelling premises and emotionally resonant relationships between their characters but later take narrative turns that, in my opinion, undercut the emotional weight and sinserity established early on. In Look Back, the first half is a beautifully crafted exploration of artistic growth and creative synergy. It revolves around two young artists whose contrasting styles and personalities create a dynamic where each complements what the other lacks, both artistically and emotionally. Fujino, though technically skilled and successful in her early work, feels stagnant and uninspired. Kyomoto, on the other hand, has raw talent and a unique artistic voice but lacks confidence, isolating herself from the world. Their relationship is built on mutual admiration-Kyomoto quietly inspires Fujino to improve as an artist, while Fujino's persistence ultimately draws Kyomoto out of her reclusive shell, giving her the courage to share her art and step into the world. This dynamic, where their creative journeys and personal struggles intertwine, felt intimate, and deeply engaging. However, instead of further developing this relationship or exploring how their creative influences could continue shaping their growth, the story takes a sudden turn towards melodrama and tragedy with Kyomoto's death. The emotional weight of her passing feels abrupt and almost sensationalized, overwhelming the more nuanced themes of collaboration, artistic self-discovery, and personal connection that were so beautifully developed in the first half. The focus shifts from their evolving relationship and shared growth to a heavier, grief-driven narrative that feels disconnected from what initially made the story so powerful. Similarly, Goodbye Eri opens with a deeply moving and introspective portrayal of trauma, grief, and memory. The story frames these themes through the protagonist’s relationship with Eri and their shared passion for filmmaking, using the art of storytelling itself as a way to process pain. The narrative explores how we choose to remember our loved ones and how artistic expression can serve as both a coping mechanism and a way to preserve the past. However, the second half pivots sharply into meta-fictional territory, prioritizing narrative subversion over the emotional depth established earlier. While the twist is bold, it sacrifices the heartfelt exploration of grief and personal healing for a commentary on the nature of storytelling itself. This shift, while intellectually interesting, feels detached from the vulnerability and emotional sincerity that made the first half so affecting, ultimately diluting the impact of the narrative's core themes. In both stories, the endings feel like they sacrifice the emotional depth and relational exploration built in the first halves for dramatic twists that, while ambitious, ultimately diminish the overall narrative impact. Fujimoto’s strength lies in crafting compelling premises and emotionally resonant relationships/character dynamics, but the narrative pivots often feel like he prioritize shock value and structural experimentation over emotional depth, causing the stories to lose their resonance. The first halves of both works held immense potential for something profound, yet the narrative shifts left me feeling more disconnected than moved by the end.

    Just watched it yesterday. It's crazy how a montage and some simple piano/orchestral music can make a rather mundane scene so emotional (Wolf Children vibes). Why am I crying while watching a middle school girl draw? 😭 And they did it a few times. lol The music was so good for the entire movie. And I think I enjoyed the anime more than the manga because it was more clear to me when they were switching between past/present or the alternate timeline. I was kinda confused while reading the manga but that's my fault, I guess. lol

  • @ZornA.Mations

    I personally feel that Look Back IS perfect. The intro shows off Fujino's ego, and that ego, that she tries desperately to hold onto, is what leads to her losing her only friend. After they split up, it's apparent that Fujino is kind of miserable, which is shown even more with the last sequence of the film. We know by now that Fujino NEEDS Tsukimoto, so after she dies, Fujino is empty. The "what if" part of the movie Fujino's power fantasy, it's her blaming art, her own art, and that's why Tsukimoto died. It's Fujino saying "If only I didn't start drawing again, I could've saved Tsukimoto. We could've stayed friends." The movie then jumps up straight back to reality after this, a reality where Tsukimoto is gone, and Fujino has nothing. Why does she draw? Because of Tsukimoto. Without Tsukimoto, why does she draw? There is no reason why, and yet, she does anyway. The same way as she did before meeting Tsukimoto- alone.

    The remaining 20 minutes of the movie you're talking about was I think one of the most important part of the movie. Many, including you, may think its a sliding show presentation, but its a representation of a manga, or the still picture itself. Just cause its an animation, it doesn't have to be moving all the time. I find it appealing on animations when it has this kind of scenes. And you may not be thinking about it but this movie has so many meanings, the still images may be conveying that time itself is stuck when looking back at the good times that just serves as only a memory to those especially who's grieving. And many details in this movie is such unnoticeably beautiful, like how the credits rolled begins with a sunrise and ends with night city and her leaving her work place. This is a chiefs kiss in all aspect.

  • @finding_Jami
    @finding_Jami 2 месяца назад

    The fact that not many people don't know much about the artist makes this movie not as much as relatable. If you havent seen the interview of Fugimoto way back before he started chainsawman, he said that he struggled conveying his emotion through art cause "he's not good enough" just like the character in the movie, Fugino and Kyoumoto represent himself.(Its not a total coincidence for the characters to have half of his name in them.) He kept studying so he could show more in details his genius ideas though his arts, yet he struggles to improve. I as an artist myself find this movie relatable in all aspect. The difficulty of making arts, struggling to keep on finding its purpose, "Why do you draw, Fugino?" As Kyoumoto asks hits hard for me. I think this is a true story of the artist himself. The movie itself is amazing, but when you know what the meanings behind them is what makes it even more amazing.
