The Adventure Book Intro (Sneak Peek)
My dad gave me one of these, with the motor drive when he bought the F3T. Unfortunately he did not hand me down any Nikkor glass. His Nikkors were sacrosanct. Me being a broke college student, had to use Sigmas. Regardless of this and never having really read the owner's manual I managed to use it fruitfully for years and years. Never took a bad photo with it actually. It's my favorite film camera of all time too. Haven't shot a frame of film in 30 years though.
So if I have crop sensor Nikon camera what lens should I buy to an equivalent field of view ? I own a z50 currently.
Your portrait shots in there were shot with an 18mm lens. While on a crop sensor the FOV may be the same as 28, the rendering, DOF and distortion is the same. Changing the size of a sensor or film doesn’t change the physics of how light is manipulated by a lens. This is why 40mm in 645 is so nice. You have the DOF and rendering of a 40mm but the FOV of 28mm in 135 format.
I agree.... 28mm is the most versatile. I have about 5 of these.
Did you ever have a problem with the vignetting with your easy35?
Nope! If you’re experiencing vignetting, it may have more to do with the lens. I’m stopping down to f8, which eliminates any vignetting with my particular lens. Hope that’s helpful!
The 28mm on my phone is great. So I use the 50mm 1.4 as my everyday lens on my camera.
Second your love of the Nikkor 28 mm 2.8 AIS lens. My favorites lens ever. Super sharp and versatile.
I have that camera , and too many lenses. Very reliable and easy to get great shots. Maybe too easy. For a challenge I use a Canon FT QL with FL lenses and stop down metering. But after watching your video I am going to load film in the F3 and shoot a few rolls. Thank you for reminding me how great this camera is !
When i first bought my first fulll frame camera i bought a 28mm f1.8 from the owner aomg with it and i shot with it for about 2 years before even trying anything longer
"you might not be used to a 28mm focal length"... isn't this what almost every DX kit zoom from nikon starts with? 18/27mm --- and its been a great focal lenght :)
I don’t do much shooting anymore, but when I was younger (😂) for my kind of photography, I had a 70 - 210 zoom on one camera, and a 135 mm single focal length on the other. I also had a 50mm f1.4, just in case.
I call it the focal length of being free!
Matt, don't neglect to mention the XC 35mm f/2 lens. Cheaper, lighter, but optically the exact same lens.
Tell me why you can't do the same thing with a 24mm or 35mm? It's really about a step backwards or fwd.
Good video; very nice sample pics. I have a Nikon F3T, and it a very nice film camera, but I prefer the Olympus OM-3 or OM-4. They are very similar, with the OM-3 being a mechanical shutter and the OM-4 electronic, but two mechanical release speeds. The OM cameras are noticeably smaller and lighter, but the biggest advantage is the spot meter. The Olympus Spot Meter lets the photographer use a single average, a spot, average up to 8 spots, or base the meter on a highlight or shadow meter reading. It is perfect for those using the zone system. Whereas the meter is used by everyone all the time, most of the advantages of the F3 are of questionable benefit to most users. Yes, Nikon has much more glass, but most shooters have a goto lens and a zoom, or a set of 3 or 4 lenses covering wide, normal, portrait, and telephoto. The OM cameras are not perfect -- early models had a battery drain issue and taking full advantage requires learning the metering system -- but a very good condition OM-4T (no battery issue) are still under $500 on eBay, usually with a lens. The Nikon F3 (and super heavy Leica R6.2) are great manual focus SLRs -- I am not selling mine -- but my every day carry is an OM-3 sporting a 50mm lens with an additional wide angle lens.
I just purchased a Canon FL 19mm 3.5 R lens from the sixties to go on my Canon AE-1. This lens is known to be exceptional and used by pros. It is not as good as a modern lens, it flares very much. But as many of our celebrity photographers from the 60's, you can always crop. I have not received it yet, but I am going to use it as soon as I do.
Just bought a mint Canon EF 28mm 1.8 from Japan a few weeks ago. I am a happy camper.
I have tried Epson scanner, lab scans from different labs and dslr scanning. And actually, to me, the DSLR scans look the best. I've been using the Pentax HD FA WR 100mm macro 2.8. I guess this lens would work with the Valoi e35? Right now I'm using Lomography's digitaliza :) Wonder if this will be even easier and just as good?
28mm ? Your phone can do this ... why do you even try with a true photo dslr ?
No, I had two Nikon F3 Cameras, I was not fund of it, but my two Canon New F-1 Cameras are the best ever analogue 35mm SLR Camera ever made ! I will not even start to mention other film format Cameras, because there are better ones in other film formats !
I was totally on board until the slide scan. Yeah I can see at 100% the amount of detail and more realistic colour rendition.. but honestly the Epson looked more "film" to me. I guess "film" just means a bit more shitty to my stupid eyes then, but the point of film is the imperfection, right? Regardless, I think digital film scan wins every time, because you get a cool digital camera out of it!
Nice video, thank you! I just purchased a Valoi Easy35 and intend to use it with the Sigma 70/2.8 EX-DG. I ran into a small problem: the filter thread causes friction when screwing in. You can solve this by adding a tiny bit of graphite, this lubricates the thread. Just use a soft pencil (B or 2B). I did not want to apply the graphite directly on the Sigma lens, so took a 62mm UV filter and removed the glass (it is held in place by a circular spring so you don’t have to break the glass!). The filter acts as an extra 5mm ring between the Valoi tubes and the lens. Works fine! One question: would it be better to use exposure bracketing? +1 and -1 EV.
Beautiful video. I ordered this lens. I cannot wait to receive it. I’ve got the 33 1.4 and love it.
Seems really dumb that Fuji doesn’t make a ‘no-holds-barred’ 28mm lens. 🧐 I have the 16-80mm, and while very versatile, does not have the sharpness I really want. 🤓 I’ve looked at (and nearly bought) both the 23 & 33’s, but they just don’t have that natural perspective. 😢 All of the 28mm photos I’ve seen confirm that it will be worth waiting… ☺️
Fuji does make an 18mm f1.4 (27mm equivalent) and it’s fantastic! I did a review on my channel!
@@MatthewArringtonphoto well, I’m actually looking for an approximate 43 mm equivalent. I noticed that when I frame things with my telephoto, (to mimic my own field of view) that I am always sitting under 50 mm equivalent. So, that’s why I’m not buying the 33 mm from Fuji. Anyway, thank you for replying to my comment… 😀
You were given an easy35 to review for free, call it an unbiased review but have not a single bad or negative thing to say about the product. Is it a perfect product?
35mm for me. On 6x4.5 film format that equates to 55mm, and that's what is mounted to my Mamiya 645 1000s 99 percent of the time.
Agree 100%
The Valoi easy35 has totally changed my film scanning process. Like you, I was initially not happy with the quality of lab scans i was getting back. I experimented with a DIY setup using a portable light table and 35mm holder, but it wasn't quite up to par. I saw the Valoi on Instagram, I was immediately drawn to its compact size and potential, i look at a few RUclips videos then pulled the trigger. I use the Valoi with my Fuji XT2 and TT Artisan 40mm Macro lens, and the results have been incredible. Scanning a roll of film takes only a few minutes, the setup is easy and simple and the portability makes it perfect for scanning 35mm film. I've had mine now for about 3 months, best investment to this already expensive hobby of shooting film (lol). Great video and thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Yes, it’s a game changer and makes me want to shoot 35mm again! I could even see bringing this on a long trip where I’m developing and scanning my film along the way. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching!
I have almost the exact same gear as you with that TT Artisan 40mm but a Fujifilm X-Pro3, until my XT5 gets fixed. However, I feel the X-Pro3 is giving me great results so not missing the extra megapixels of the XT5. Great solution. I just wish it could somehow be adapted for 120 film.
Bought this lens two months ago; wear it on my X-E3 behind a Hoya UV filter and the original round Fuji lens hood. Its small size is a Big Plus.
Canon RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens on a small R8 body is my favorite combination this days.
You should sell your Fuji kit and buy a Nikon Df. It's such an awesome camera and I can use my manual MF lenses with it, including non-AI! Its sensor is beautiful, the dynamic range is nuts and the high ISO quality is on par with modern cameras. The only thing missing in mine is a custom focusing screen but I'll take care of it one day :)
Nice video! Do you think it will work with a Tokina 100mm macro? Does it come with enough tubes for this lens?
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! The Tokina (which is a lovely lens I used to own myself!) should work great on a full frame sensor and there are enough tubes to make it work. Are you shooting full frame or a crop sensor body?
@@MatthewArringtonphoto Yes, I'm using a full frame Nikon Df, I love to use it along with a FM2. But I'm addicted to shooting and developing film now and I'd like an easier way of scanning the negatives. Thank you for answering, I shall buy that kit now :)
@@joserocha1840 Wonderful, you’re going to love it!
Do you do post in Lightroom or Capture One?
Lightroom Classic, though I have used (and enjoy) Capture One in the past. All edits could’ve been made in C1 just as easily as LR. Hope that helps!
28mm?! 😂😂😂😂😂
Beautiful photographs 🎉🎉 I own this lens but have not used much after i had the 28mm Z. But your photos hv inspired me to pick it up again. Its close focus is great and it is very sharp
I have and have used every single Nikon single digit F cameras. The F3 is actually my least favorite of them all. Just my 2c
Thanks for sharing your perspective! It’s definitely a subjective thing and I’m glad you found another body you like.
I like the idea of analog. I just don’t get why you want to do analog just to converted to digital… you might as well shot with your phone. It is like making mp3 files from vynil records.
I understand your point. For me, however, I love the way film captures color (for color film) and grain/contrast in black and white. The shooting experience is also different and there is an element of surprise and experimentation with film. That said, not everyone has a darkroom and ability to make traditional photographic paper prints with an enlarger (especially color prints), so these are going to be digitized in one way or another, so it helps to figure out a technique to capture as much of the nuance and intrinsic qualities of the film in a digital capture as possible. That’s my take at least. Thanks for watching!
I looks like a good product, but for that money I might just go and get a dedicated 35mm scanner. I just don't see the value in terms of what you actually get delivered for the price you pay. The utility is totally there, but DSLR scanning to me has always been the budget alternative to getting good scans.
Thanks for sharing your perspective! Having seen the results of dedicated film scanners, many of which require vuescan or much older software to get running on modern computers, as well as results from using a professional flatbed, I personally prefer the results and flexibility of DSLR scanning. I don’t see it as a budget alternative, but one with a little more flexibility and incredible quality/resolution scans for the investment. This unit is pricey, for sure, but is one option that simplifies my preferred way to digitize my film. You can DIY something for a lot less money, and that’s a great option as well. I hope you’ve found a solution you like as well!
@@MatthewArringtonphoto I can second the opinion. Just scanned my whole library of 35mm film with a Sony A1 and the results are nothing less than stunning. Yes it looks a bit sketchy and it is 3D printed and it can get improved but the quality of the scans is so much better than anything I have seen so far.
Objective tests/comparisons for your setup inform the decision. In 2025 I will test: easy120 + adapted 645 Macro eg Phase One/Mamiya + GFX100 + Capture One or LrC. 120 roll B&W people images only.
I’m a new beginner using a NEX 7 for video using the Sony 18-55 mm kit lens so I wanted to know if you think this lens is better than my kit lens & the Sony E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS?
Nice job.
When they made the little speed bump of grip on it - the fans went wild, it was revolutionary.
Leica q3 comes to mind
those were some really lovely sample images, how do you find focusing with the automatic focus magnification turned on (it engages when you move the focus ring)?
Thank you! Yeah, I use the automatic focus assist when I move the ring and it’s extremely helpful!
Coming from a rangefinder system, it often helps to always have the focus ring at infinity so that you know you will always be turning it in one direction to achieve focus, rather than not knowing whether to turn the tab left or right to get the subject in focus.
Love this video, really confirmed advice from some photo dudes to try 28mm lens while jumping fully into film for the first time and kicking auto mode training wheels to the curb. Mainly bc of my love for street and good composition, and from study on youtube university lol which has been a game changer for this never too late bloomer photo enthusiast! and some content is easier to digest than others. I'll be bingeing your content soon, keep it coming.
Great video! I think I'm sold. Have you since played with the newer Nikon Zf? It's a dream!
Answers why he likes 28mm, but never why it’s the only lens YOU need.
Most people are familiar with 28mm because it's the equivalent focal length of most lenses on smartphone cameras
Your title is Bull Shit! ... Channel blocked.
I carry the 28 f2.8 and 85mm 1.8. All I need for my style. Thanks for the video.
