ITC Reef Delete button fix

Simple fix to sort out the button, which can be difficult to hold down for lengths of time. Sorry for the crude fix. It's all I had to hand to make this work. Surprised that ITC or other Aquarium company's have not come up with a simple fix or sell a simple add on like this to sort this problem out. If I had a 3D printer I would make a simple clip on for this device.

I'll be going HOB equipment rather than drilling for a sump. Wanted to keep all the cabinet space and planned to upgrade in a few years when I have more experience with reef tanks. If I used thicker MDF, I would have got the same effect and a smoother finish on the wood. If the shelves are narrow like mine is should be ok. If the shelves have more depth, you might have to put a middle batton to stop the MDF from sagging. All depends on the thickness of the MDF.

    Best modification for a gas grill. I bought a generic stainless steel grill without enough research. It has design flaws, poor heat distribution, and is very prone to flare-ups (most gas grills are like that). Was ready to toss it or sell it. Then decided to try one trick before I let it go and buy a Weber. Rig it with some rocks and see if it would work better. Now the heat is regulated and the flare-ups are virtually gone. I'm glad the body was able to withstand the extra heat. The rocks turn some of the heat into radiant heat (i.e. like the very expensive infrared grills). Now I get much better results, similar to charcoal or a commercial char-broiler. Be careful though because the rocks and the grates do get red hot and flimsy grills might not survive that heat retention.

    • @nitromaxuk
      @nitromaxuk 3 года назад

      Thank you for your comment, I agree, I have noticed a improvement cooking with lave rocks and not one flare up since I did the mod. I will keep an eye on the grates, I have used the BBQ around 10 times since the mod and the grates look OK, so time will tell.

    • @geniuspharmacist
      @geniuspharmacist 3 года назад

      @@nitromaxukmost likely everything will be just fine. Some grills have aluminum parts which is great for its durability and rust resistance but might be more prone to damage from extreme heat compared to steel. Any flare-ups I get, which I don't really consider "flare ups" like before, are very minimal and very small "clean high temp burn" , no soot or food loss. I also keep my eyes open and rotate food as needed. Good luck.

    I'm hoping to attempt something like this but have been put off by other videos where people have about £3k worth of equipment! Can I check what it is that you used to 'join' the shelves at each side and give a neat finish from the front - was it more of the smooth square edge pine?

    • @nitromaxuk
      @nitromaxuk 3 года назад

      Hi Bob, the shelves are strong and I have speakers and my music system on it, it small but heavy. I am not a carpenter, so I could not do neat finishes on the shelve as I am not that advanced in the trade. This is what I did, I purchased 2x1" battens, and cut them straight down the middle with my table saw (or get 1 x 1" battens), I measured the alcove and cut the wood down to size. I took one batten and pre-drilled holes and using wall plugs screwed it to the wall (picture 1), I did the same with the sides as well (picture 2), the front wood was difficult as there is nothing to attach it to or support it, so I used small L shape corner brace to screw the front to the side wood (Picture 2). This does not make the front wood strong and does not give it a neat finish, so I used 18mm thick plywood board for the top of the shelve and used wood glue and pinned it down (picture 3 & 4), I then used 3mm plywood board and glued / pinned it under the shelve (picture 5). This now makes the shelve strong and supports the front batten. To cover the front layers of wood I pinned 4mm thick pine stripwood which was 44mm tall and pinned it to the front of the shelve (Picture 6 & 7), I used nail punch to push pins into wood and fill holes with wood filler, light sanding down, and then painted it over. This makes the shelve look like its one thick block of wood. I left small gaps on the sides to run LED strip lights and then pinned door Architrave to finish off the effect (picture 8). The end result (picture 9 & 10). Pictures www.dropbox.com/sh/ia04gwow3m2go5c/AAA6ebk-4cYsjw28gN5xhk_ga?dl=0 Hope this helps, any questions please ask, happy to help.

    Hi John, cracking job there mate, exactly what I'm looking to do, couple of questions if you don't mind. 1, What size batons did you use for shelf support's. 2, What size timber for the door frames. 3, What did you use for cabinet tops. 4, What lighting did you use. Sorry that was 4 questions 😂

      Hi Chris, thank you for your comment, to answer your questions. 1, I used 2 x 1 inch wood which I cut in half using a table saw to make 1 x 1 inch, then they were screwed into the wall to make a square frame. 2, I used 2 x 2 for the door frames. 3, I used solid Oak Boards 18x400x850 Homebase is the only place I could find that sell these, just used Danish oil to bring the wood grain out, make sure you do both side or the wood will curve if only one side is oiled. www.homebase.co.uk/solid-oak-board-18-x-400-x-850mm_p517814 4, LED lighting strips, with WIFI controller (RGBW) works with Google, As the LED strips has RGB and W (White) it gives a nice bright soft colour. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PK8B6VD/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item

    Hi John, thinking about doing this, my new bbq is from Homebase (Texas Stardom) looks quite similar to yours, is yours from Argos? My main question is - did you notice an increase in the heat that the BBQ produces and did the flavour of the meat improve?

    • @nitromaxuk
      @nitromaxuk 4 года назад

      Hi Ryan, I got mine from Home Bargains in 2008, but I do think they all have the same design. No increase in heat, I was getting a lot of flare up using the metal shield, with this Mod no flare ups at all. I have noticed that the centre lava rocks are hot, hot enough to cook but the side are just warm, this is due to the position of the burners and the heat is just based in the middle section. I have ordered Ceramic Briquettes which was mentioned on a previous comment by "Dipesh Gurung", I have not used them yet, but reviews state that they get very hot so this might sort out the heat problem on the sides, if that does not work then I will cut the metal shield a slight bit and have the shield and the lave rocks on top. Flavour was so much better, found that you can taste the meat and seasoning better, before I would get that crispy burnt taste like when cooking fast on high heat, this way sausages taste like sausages and chicken taste like chicken, where before my wife use to say they all taste the same on the BBQ.

      Thank you, I have have done 4 BBQ's since doing the Mod, Lava rocks do not need replacing as they do not burn away like charcoal does. All oil on the lava rocks will burn away and produce smoke, but if they do get over covered with oil then they will need replacing. Taste wise, I think they taste better as with the metal plate I use to get a lot of flare ups and less smoke, the lava rocks do produce a nice amount of smoke, I purchased a smoke box as well, have not used it as weather changed, but looking to add hickory or apple cedar wood smoke flavor.

      @@lahuretz they look good, will work the same way, but from one of the reviews they say that because they are ceramic they heat up a lot hotter so if you can have the mesh dropped down a bit below the grill that should sort out the over heating problem. I might get some myself and have a mixture as near the front of the BBQ I have a low heat area, this might sort that problem out, thanks

      Hi Paul. I think I had the setting as follows: Sunrise : 8:00 to 12:00 daylight : 12:00 to 16:00 (pink 10%, Cyan 70%, Blue 65%, Purple 70%, white 15% or 10%) Sunset: 16:00 to 22:00 Night: blue 1% the time I had it was longer than normal, as some reefers have their lights from 10am to 8pm, or 8 til 8. I kept pink very low as this can promote algae growth, the white were low as the white can wash out the other spectrum colours if too high. It does not need to be ramped up this high, it can be lowered by 20 to 30% on each value, but watch out for algae growth, if you do notice algae lower light intensity and reduce light duration.

    What equipment did you add to make it marine? I'd love to convert mine into a reef tank but am confused by the array of sumps/return pumps/protein skimmers on the market!

    • @nitromaxuk
      @nitromaxuk 4 года назад

      Hello, the equipment needed unfortunately is everything, found out the hard way. let me explain, a sump is a must as this will house all your equipment so it does not take up the space in your display tank (just like a external filter) the return pump is needed to pump water from the sump back to the display tank, the overflow in the display tank allows water to go back into the sump by gravity. I did get a sump with a refugium, put cheto and Calapora which did grow wild and kept my nitrates and phosphates at a good level, but as the cheto and calapora needs light to grow, this was causing algae to grow in the sump which was ok as long it was not in the display tank, but it was causing algae to grow in the other chambers as well, so decided to cut away the baffles and get a algae reactor where the algae and cheto only grow in the reactor, (I will be doing a new video on the new modification soon) the water from the display tank went into filter sock which caught all detritus and floating particles, which was ok until it came to clean the filter socks, I had around 8 socks which I would change and let it collect up and then wash them when I was running out (a pain in the A*s*s) so decided to get rid of the filter socks and invest in a automatic roller mat, best equipment I have, one fleece roll lasts me 3 months. I changed all the pipe work at the back as well and installed a manifold to run new reactors. Sound expensive (it is) but I did this so I don't have to spend too much time maintaining the tank. When I first started the tank all I had was a sump with the refugium, heater, return pump, cheep grow light and protein skimmer, this is all you need. As this was a new build there was no guidelines on how powerful the equipment should be, this is where I made the mistakes, the pump i purchased was too powerful so sold it on ebay and downgraded to a more cheaper pump 4000lph (TMC Reef Pump 4000) is perfect and I am running that at only 40% power, the skimmer was a nightmare could not get it to skim, purchased it on ebay so resold that on ebay and got a new TMC Reef-Skim PRO 500, work brilliantly, started skimming the minute I turned it on, cheap filter socks from ebay 200 micron, and a cheap grow light bulb with a plug timer. All pipework are 32mm. The real problem is the cabinet was not designed for a reef tank or to hold all the equipment, a lot of modification when into the cabinet, most reef cabinets are tall which allows you to easily install equipment, I was struggling for space, the skimmer was touch the inside shelf, was tempted to get rid of the cabinet and get a custom steel one made( sold on ebay), decided to lower the base and cut away part of the shelf which gave me more room and it worked. (sorry for the war and peace comment) check out the full build and setup on my videos ruclips.net/video/bB3lNfl2K6s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/cDUEMASDkOI/видео.html part 3 to follow soon.

    Is the sump essential for a tank this size or can I just use a powerful canister filter?

    • @nitromaxuk
      @nitromaxuk 5 лет назад

      With Marine tanks it mainly about nutrients export. Getting rid of Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate organic waste. The sump was used so all the equipment was in the sump and not in the display tank, which would make it unsightly and limit the amount of space in your display tank. There are hang on the back filters which do the same as a sump would, but they are costly. Now to answer your question regarding the canister filter, a lot of reefers do not use them as they are a nitrate factory, all the waste gets collected in the filter and rots away, which increase your nitrate and phosphate. One way to over come this is to regularly clean the canister filter, but you do not want to do that every 2 days. If you plan on keeping corals then I would recommend a sump as you need to get your phosphate low, Phosphate clings to calcium which corals need to grow, when the phosphate clings to the calcium the corals can not absorbed the calcium which stops the corals from growing, high phosphate cause algae and other issues. if you do not have room for a sump, then have a display refugium these do not need to be underneath the tank, it can be next to the tank, and have as a display tank as well with its own Eco-system. Like here ruclips.net/video/uBSLgxsAg-Q/видео.html If you limit your bio-load less fish (feeding, waste) then a refugium will export the nutrients out of the tank, the refugium will thrive with cheato, mangroves, coperpods, mysis shrimp, they will look after your tank. Refugiums do not have to big as you can see from the link. Hope this helps, need more info please ask.

      No, I have read up that marine tanks tend to have a much more thicker bead of silicone, but that is due to tanks size, but tropical tanks can be used for marine.
