Mahalaya marks the beginning of 'Devi Paksha' and the end of the 'Pitri Paksha', The celebration begins with Mahalaya. Mahalaya is the day when the goddess Durga is believed to have descended to Earth.For Bengalis, Mahalaya symbolises not just the return of Goddess Durga to her paternal home on earth but the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

মহালয়া 'দেবীপক্ষ' এর সূচনা এবং 'পিত্রীপক্ষ' এর সমাপ্তি চিহ্নিত করে, মহালয়ার মাধ্যমে উদযাপন শুরু হয়। মহালয়া হল সেই দিন যখন দেবী দুর্গা পৃথিবীতে অবতরণ করেছিলেন বলে বিশ্বাস করা হয়৷ বাঙালিদের জন্য, মহালয়া কেবল দেবী দুর্গার পৃথিবীতে তার পৈত্রিক বাড়িতে প্রত্যাবর্তনের প্রতীক নয় বরং মন্দের উপর ভালোর চূড়ান্ত বিজয়ের প্রতীক৷
