I really enjoy the '74 funky, laid back Berthas. While I can find something to like about every era of the Dead, most of my favorite shows are from the one drummer period. To me, the band has a nimbleness and swing that is absent from the post-hiatus band. Also, Keith was at the height of his powers. He's my favorite of the Dead's keyboard players. Note: I love Pigpen, but more for his skills as a frontman and harp player.

The Harder They Come When I Die 18:25 Pennies From Heaven 31:30 -- cuts at 47:12 (end of a cassette side) After Midnight -- cuts in 47:24 When I Die 59:54 You Can Leave Your Hat On 1:18:30 -- cuts at 1:30:03 How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) cuts in at 1:30:08 -- concludes at 1:33:08 Gaylord Birch is probably the drummer and Tony Saunders is probably the bass. These tracks probably come from Keystone Berkeley 1/21 & 22/75. Another possibility is the Aunt Monk shows at the Lion's Share on 7/24 & 25/75. Jerry did not play on 7/23/75. The two performances of When I Die mean at least two shows are excerpted. Great tunes in any case. The Harder They Come is off the hook entirely. Thanks DC Cat.
