EP221- Gardening for the Soul: Des Doyle Chats About His New Book Growing Beauty
Thank you for making this video! It was great!
That’s so interesting, how do they damage it so deeply?
They are a tiny black slug you would hardly know they were there but once inside they just keep munching!!!
Thanks for this, I'm about to try this for the first time. One question, what do you do with the newly potted dormant runners until spring when they can be replanted outside?
Once potted keep in a greenhouse and water as required ensuring they don't dry out over the next few months. If no greenhouse just pot and place outside in a sheltered spot and keep and eye on them. best of luck with it. Happy gardening John
Can you introduce fish?
ARE YOU SHY YOURSELF?
He doesn't advocate fish or ducks on account of the amount of "nutrients" aka poop they introduce to the system
Why music. I can't hear what you are saying
Music is like loud nonsense in the background
"It's time to get real about the importance of pollinators. Let's take action by preserving their habitats and not mowing."
I got the seeds from Sandro Cafolla the most knowledgeable person on wildflowers in Ireland his website is www.wildflowers.ie/
Hi can you tell me the mix of wildflowers you used and where you got them. I’m from Ireland and would love this mix. Thanks
I got these from Sandro Cafolla the most knowledgeable person on wildflowers in Ireland. His website is www.wildflowers.ie/
Thanks a million John. Some great information and things to consider.
Glad it was helpful Stephen and best of luck with the project.
I have my doubts whether they were slugs. Maybe it's wireworm damage.
It was slugs Jan it’s a little black slug which there are lots of locally. Bad damage unfortunately.
Me watching random farming video at 2:26 am in the morning knowing wellt hat I'm gonna forget about this 3 shorts later:
Thanks very much John for all the advice you give us. Can I ask why you chose to have open sides on the polytunnel? Great for air circulation if we get really hot summer weather I’d imagine, but what are the other benefits?
Thank you Audrey for listening and supporting. The reason behind the netted sides is that my house is a Richel house (French Type) and is really tall which means hot air can get trapped in there, originally the roof was vented with plastic sheets that opened. When I moved the house I didn't want to reinstall that system however it really needs ventilation hence the reason for the nets on the side. It means I have to be careful early in the year with cold but during normal growing season its an airy house so no much pest or disease issues build in there. I hope this makes sense. John
Great vid thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you
You're welcome
how to make privacy walls with golden cypress trees? I have planted them this year with a distance of 4 feet between my 2 golden cypress. currently they are 4 feet tall and they have not yet formed privacy wall. As it's winter till February next year , should I trim their top to make them bush out to for privacy walls or leave their top as it's and wait till it get the height which I want to achieve it and only prune the sides.. i want them to form the privacy wall of around 8 feet. plz explain how should I trim them. only the sides or their top aswell. plz explain?
I would not cut yet as they are not planted very long. In the first year almost all the growth will be root growth which you cannot see. After year one you should see strong top growth however to fill out to the size you require it could 4+ years. Best of luck with it 👍
@@mastermygarden9542 so when should I start trimming them. My gardener told me to trim 3-5 inches growth from the front and back sides to make them more denser and leave the top as it is without trimming. should I not touch them as of now or for next 3 years? pl explain how and when should I trim them. My zone is 5b
@@MUJTABA1001 I would lightly trim (3-4 inches ) the top next spring at the end of winter this will help them to fill out.
@@mastermygarden9542 what about the front and back ? should I trim them aswell leaving the left and the right side as it is? And do i have to do this coming spring after the winters are over. If you can plz share your email or Instagram page ID, I can send you the pics.
Super interesting insight on the tomato pruning I did always wonder what would happen if I left them to do their own thing. Enjoyed listening about the different preservation tips I am so new to preserving but canning & pickling is something I am really looking to get into! Great podcast 👏 🌱

Hello again, I ment to ask where did you purchase the electric/heated propagator? (perhaps fruithill farm?). Also, do you find these effective due to the fact they are not thermostatically controlled.cheers
Hi Alan, no I got it online its a Garland big 3 it is good and suitable for most. If you were germinating seeds or doing cutting requiring a set temp then a controlled one would be better for sure. I use mine sparingly to be honest. Thanks Alan
What about Klausman peat free. It’s my first time using it and it’s not cheap so I would expect a quality product. However, I take your point regarding the quality of compost between batch’s. It very confusing!!!!
For sure I see huge differences in compost quality. Klasmann are excellent composts to be fair I have never actually used it but know people who say it is top class.
Hello 👋 . Very very nice video 👍
Great advice! I’m going to wait until the end of February. Thanks!
Thanks Jackie me too Feb sowing for me apart from onions. Best of luck for the growing season.
Thanks John.
