Is it cannot use it 3D Grid map? TT
In my Tile Palette, i dont see Script Flood Fill Continguous Only Lock Z Position Z Position Donw below. So I cant switch the Z Position. Anyone had the same issue and knows what have I done wrong?
28:45 I don't think you ever showed your character moving up the z-axis? Does that actually work with this code? In my opinion the most difficult part about 2D multi-layer isometric is having the character step up and down a layer without clipping and maintaining the draw order
Thanks for this nice Isometric Tilemap tutorial, but I tried to build it based on your tutorial and one thing did not work. I think the problem is, that my Project can not detect the different Layers i guess. On my Tille Pallete on the Z Position 0 it works and I can see my Grass Block but if i switch on Z Position 1 it disappears. Does anyone had this problem earlier?
I would argue that "choices and consequences" are what make *every* game fun, not just tactics games. Even the most basic of action RPGs have you choose whether to attack or defend in any given situation. Those choices then carry consequences, be they big or small, independent or compounding, and this is what creates the fabric of play. If there were no consequences for your decisions, there would be no point in making them to begin with, and you would have no game.
I'm having some trouble. Following at around 4:19, my code has an error that doesn't let me test the changes - CS1503: Argument 1, cannot convert from 'UnityEngine.GameObject' to 'OverlayTile' It's at (41,49) - the 'overlayTile' in the area where we call PositionCharacterOnTile Thank you for any help, and for the helpful guides! Not sure why I'm getting this issue, havent seen any1 else with it
You're trying to set a game object to an overlayTile. I think you're missing a GetComponents<OverlayTile>() on the game object
@lawlessgames3844 I think I'm understanding this - I have the previois line starting as GameObect instead of OverlayTile, but when I try to change that line to match your code, focusedTileHit doesn't exist - is this something that was added after the last video?
Oh I think I got it fixed, it's because I was trying to use both "overlayTile" and "tile" simultaneously, so once I cleared that up I fixed the line and added the the getcomponent<overlaytile> and it worked fine. Thanks again!
I'm trying to follow this tutorial again - but I can't seem to get the overlaytile prefabs to generate when starting the game - the map manager script is the exact same, too
Nevermind lol I assigned the overlayprefab variable while in game mode so it didnt save
Okay nevermind now I cant get the overlays and mouse to only target the top tiles - but I'm gonna try flipping the camera to the other side of the tilemap and see how that goes - idk I think my tilemap z values are just in reverse compared to yours?
Yup that was the issue. Lower Z values were being layered over higher Z values. Surprised I even made the tilemap that way

Only half of the overlay tiles are created. Why is this like this??
ㄴ I found a solution. I changed the tile renderer option to chunk -> individual, and tiles for the entire thing were created.

Man, I can't thank you enough for making these tutorial vids and uploading the files. I've shelved an idea I loved for YEARS because learning Unity was just too daunting. I'm now giving it another shot, and I'm gonna start digging into the files you've provided. One thing, though... Maybe I missed it, but it would be really helpful if you could explain, even visually with the finished feature, what it is you're about to do before doing it. That way I know what we're working towards. I'm finding myself skipping forward to the end of a chapter to see what the feature is before scrubbing back to see how you get there. Also, the tile being activated by the mouse seems to be offset by half a tile vertically and horizontally (I'm using the download from the Unity Asset Store) Thanks again!

How hard would this to make but top down and normal square grid for a rts game????
For a top down game the steps are all identical. Just some slight differences in the map manager. No idea for an rts game though

Your range finder is not checking for blocked tiles. You just need to add that check to GetNeighbours too.
To change this work with diagonals too. 1) Change the 4 way neighbour check to be a 8 way check. 2) Check path for existing 'better' scores before adding a neighbour to openList. 3) When calculating G make it be in addition to currentNode.G

11:32 Creating overlay tiles for each and every tile is a really bad approach. Just have one and move it as needed, same with the cursor.
Unity 6 has this strange bug that when you change the Z position in the tile palette you want to paint on, it reverts back to a different number when you mouse is over the tilemap.. so you have to go back and enter the number again. I've used tilemaps for a few major versions of Unity now and it's always had huge bugs like this.

Would be great if you made a 3D version of this for Unreal Engine with Zoom in battles like Fire Emblem. I would buy for £50.00 easily.
That would be worth a heck of a lot more than 50 😅 Just as a suggestion, the ground-view battles can be treated like any other cutscene. You just have to work out how to serve different scenes for different matchups.
@@mandisaw I would be fascinated to see a tutorial/breakdown of how that works. I imagine you block out a scene in sequencer and use branches to determine which units are being called?
@distractedreviews6198 Lots of ways to do it, all depends on how your systems are setup. I'm more familiar with Unity, but assuming Sequencer is like Timeline, then there's probably a way to dynamically manipulate it and hook in to your combat code.

Thanks for making this! I looked at a few grid tutorials, and yours is by far the most adaptive and stable I have found. I do need to add for those who, like me, couldnt get this to work on a 2D tilemap, just remove the first for loop that loops through the Z coordinates, it will then generate!
this is so cool. a way to maby improve it might be, if theres like an elevated terrain infront of a unit, maby have it turn a bit transparent or overlay the units outline or something, so that you cant lose track of them.
