But Thomas Mapfumo's "mamvemve" is a post-2000 production, not 1992!
@@magwazaisheunesu yes, you are right
I lived in YK from 1968-71. Yellowknife had just been made the capital a couple years before (from Fort Smith) and it was a boom town. Good paying jobs for anyone who wanted to work. A real mix then of: hippies, US draft dodgers, Indians/Metis/Inuit/trappers/miners/drunks etc. Loved my time there. It was pretty wide open and somewhat crazy in a good way. Here are some names and landmarks for anyone else who was there at that time: Shorty Brown, Orser Coca Cola plant, Tom Dornboss, Sutherland Drugs, Gold Range Hotel (known as the 'Strange Range'), YK Inn & Trappers Lounge, Jerry Jason (Golden Gloves boxing champ) & his Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet (volunteer worker there many evenings for all the free chicken I could eat), Phoebe Nahanni, Duncan Pryde ("every girl should have a little Pryde in her") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_Pryde When I was temp night mgr at YK Inn Duncan continually bugged me for a free room for his latest fling from the bars. When I turned 21 I was chumming with RCMP new recruits who were 19/20 on their first placement so I was responsible for buying all the booze for our evening parties. Various jobs I held then included: Asst surveyor Con Mine (9 months), temporary relief Night Mgr YK Inn (3 months), staking mining claims in the barrens (3 weeks) & Nahanni River area (2 weeks), house construction, purchased a couple StarCraft Boats & 9.9 outboard motors and rented them out thru Capital Industrial, some freelance writing for News North. I lived in a tiny shack on main street next door to Frosty's Burgers & Ice Cream 1/2 block from YK Inn. The perfect place for a 20-23yo hippy/adventurer/wanderer. Moved on to Churchill, then Grise Fiord. I wouldn't change it for anything, and would not be interested in returning by the video of YK today. It looks like just another city. Doug Beiers

1992 I was in grade 6. That drought stricken year made me to eat raw sunflower seed and drink water inorder to survive. Yellow maize seed porridge was the norm if the day.
That was sad, but we thank God we survived
