The idea of this channel is to create a kind of virtual museum in which an attempt is made to make historical photographic material accessible to the interested public. Basically, every conventional museum is overwhelmed by the presentation of photographic material and, above all, photo series and photo albums as exhibits, as only one page or a limited number of photos can be displayed in a showcase at a time. This is made possible by the preparation as a video, and the virtual space also provides the time that the viewer can take when it is available to him, whereas in the real museum, time is always limited, as is the ability to record.
It would be particularly desirable if a discussion were to develop under each contribution, bringing together additional knowledge about the images shown, in which knowledgeable viewers share their information about the images shown.

The Tyrolean Front 1916 a remarkable series of photographs from the Wolfgang Weihs collection. These photos come from the estate of a certain Carl, who wrote on the backs of some of the photos and can also be seen marked in pencil on the photos as a person. He must have been a staff officer in the staff of the 10th Infantry Division and thus witnessed the war year 1916 on the Italian front in T...

Not all the photos you get as a collector are from photo albums or collections. Most of the time you come across isolated, out-of-context photographs that you've picked out of boxes of old postcards and papers at a flea market. These photos then speak for themselves from the motifs they show. With a lot of knowledge about uniforms and details of the equipment and surroundings, the collector can...

I am delighted to be able to present this exceptional album here. The topic of women in action during the First World War is certainly interesting in itself, but Hilde Mitterlechner's place of deployment is even more so. The album shows the wartime life of a Red Cross nurse in Albania and Montenegro, with many interesting photos of the area and the local population as well as the medical centre...

Congratulations, Herr Wolfgang Weihs, for your noble efforts at conservation of the legacy data of the Austro-Hungarian army! My Slovene late paternal grandfather served on the Alpine ('Italian') Front in World War One. Someday, I would hope that your data will be 'curated' into a on-line compendium with accompanying text & (mastered or re-performed) 'period' music.
Thank you, although I personally like the patinated sound of the gramophone frames very much - it is the original sound as it sounded back then. In the meantime there are some books in which photos from my collection have been published, which makes me very happy and gives the collecting a meaning in the first place. f.i.: www.amazon.de/1914-1918-Bildern-pictures-images-immagini/dp/3950347305 www.amazon.de/Festungskrieg-Hochgebirge-%C3%B6sterreichischen-italienischen-Hochgebirgsforts/dp/888266516X www.militaria.at/Book.aspx?book=28999620&Language=de
Mostly captains, a few lieutenants added for fun and what appears to be a naval lieutenant. Good stuff!
Very nice collection. I have a postcard from this same visit with a picture of Emperor Karl (apparently still Arch Duke) at the front with some officers using a set of large observation glasses. The inscription reads: "ital. kriegsschaupl kaiser karl als erzherzog thronfolger karl franz josef an der tiroler front." I cannot transalte: "kriegsschaupl"

Mostly light cruisers SPAUN-type and Improved SPAUN. A few shots of TELGETHOF-class battlewagons, a NICE image of GOEBEN seemingly under Turkish colors, some decent DD photos and miscellaneous interest pictures of launches, etc. I think there is an armored cruiser in there but it's hard to tell from all the yacht sails blocking the view. You post them, I'll sure as heck look at them. 😁
A very nice comment, I really appreciate it. It's great when additional knowledge enhances such a rare historical photograph. I think one can clearly see the armored cruisers Novara and Saida, some torpedo boats, and in the background, battleships of the Tegetthoff class.
Those 4-stack torpedo Boat/destroyers (guess they could be pre-dreadnaughts too) have strange lines but they are actually graceful in their own right. Thanks for posting. Merry Christmas!
These are Rapidkreuzer, as SMS Novara and Saida. Both can be seen in the video...

@@WolfgangWeihs Thanks! I thought they may be cruisers, but their lines were so similar to the Sampson and Tucker class destroyers that I could not figure it out. I will have to read up on Rapidkreuzer as they seem to fit in below a protected or light cruiser. Nice looking vessels.

Great resource. I am quite interested in Austro-Hungarian operations in WW1 as they are the forgotten partner, keep up the good work. I recently obtained a completely original (still in 8x50R Steyr) 1916 M95 in wonderful condition. It is a pleasure to shoot and very accurate its long sight radius. Very under rated rifle.

Absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing Wolfgang!
maybe "Imperial German Guard Pioneers" would have been the better translation...
It has worked also during second world war?
hi, it produced until great depression in 1929. Then most factories stoppt producing chemicals. In WW2 there was a WehrmachtSTRALG, parts seems to have been used for Wr Neustätter Flugzeugwerke. On 3rd of April 45 it was Headquater of 12th SS Panzerdivision, or better for what was left of it. After the war most metal parts, railtracks and other parts were brought to russia. Since then its a ruin field.

I need help! My great grandfather was in K.u.K. Eisenbahnregiment. On his photography from 1914 he has a Fieldkappe with a sign: "II V. D.". "II" is above "V. D.". A very interesting introduction about one of the less efficient armies of WW1. The Kuk army was nearly always defeated in each of the battles it was involved in, except against Italy, and no need to ask why. I still don't know why, as this army was rather well equiped and trained. Maybe the ethnical diversity ? Anyway, I'd be glad to see more about the Kuk army
please see the other videos in my channel. I think a main problem of this army was, that the last war it fought in was in the 1860ies, so basically they still had line infantry tactics in 1914. Russian army fought against Japan in the early 1900s, Germany fought in the german-french war, so both armies were more modern. And Austria had a very conservative emperor, who was no friend of modern ideas, as many of the officers. Austrian army lost in 1914 so many officers, because it was against honour to take shelter on the battle field for an officer, that they never could be replaced during the entire war.
@@WolfgangWeihs Thanks for this very interesting answer. Indeed, Franz Josef was a very conservative monarch, but so was Nicholas Il. With a difference though, he was very interested in the modernization of his army and personnaly participated at this process after the disaster against Japan. But that's only a matter of equipment, in this field the Kuk army was in no way inferior, though the Hechtgrau color was certainly not the best. As far as officers are concerned, I know Kuk officers normally wore, at the beginning of the war, a yellow and black sash, highly visible, which made them a perfect target for Russian sharpshooters. But all 1914 armies were the same and lost a lot of officers too. We had the same problem in the French army, at a point that, at the end of 1914, many new appointed lieutenants were only sergeants a few weeks before !
actually I really appreciate this kind of exchange following my videos. Really would wish to get more feedback as yours.
@@WolfgangWeihs You're welcome ! I also do appreciate this kind of exchanges about a subject I'm particularly interested in, in particular as a WW1 militaria collector. However, though I collect these items since nearly 40 years, I nearly never saw any Kuk army items here in France, except minor things like cartridge pouches, bayonets, sometimes helmets and rifles, and I still don't know why, as it was a rather huge force with millions of men. The last thing I found were Zeiss-made binoculars used by the Kuk army and dated 1917. Do you have any explanation about such rarity ? It's true that WW1 german or british uniforms are also very rare, though some appear from time to time, but I never saw any Hechtgrau items...
I think the main reason is that only very few kuk troops were active on the western front, some heavy artillery units but not much more as far I am informed. Here you also will not find much french equipment. I have some french canteens and mess kits, some helmets, but not more.
Very well done Wolfgang!
thanks Marcus
Thank you for this ,

Maybe the marking F.A.R. also means Feld Artillerie Regiment instead of Festungs Artillerie Regiment?
Constructive criticism and comments are welcome and appreciated. Creating these videos is a lot of work, feedback is important and motivates me to improve the videos for the future. I would also be pleased if discussions were to arise in the comments that serve to increase knowledge. History should be a living science, professionals and amateurs should exchange information and benefit from each other. Historical photos are data sets that should be available to everyone.
