Nowata Methodist Church is a body of believers belonging to the Global Methodist Church in the Heartland Annual Conference. We are located in Nowata, Oklahoma, where we seek to engage our community through a variety of ministries to reach outside our doors, by worshipping together, and by teaching adults and children how to talk about their faith.
Bible Reading Challenge - Episode 89 - Isaiah 29–32, Matthew 4
A little help for the first chapter: Ariel is another name for Jerusalem.
Christmas Eve is upon us. I hope you have plans to worship the newborn King with a local Christian covenant fellowship. Go sing some Christmas carols!

Today we begin the fourth and final gospel account of Jesus. I have been preaching on it for several months, so I rejoiced to rehearse many familiar thoughts in a familiar order today as I read through these. I have a short message at the end dealing with gene therapy and what it has to do with how we read our scriptures. I’d like to think it is a worthy meditation. And don’t miss the retelling...

The scriptures speak to eternal truth, but they do so within a temporal framework. That means the story is told, not just using people from the past, but also countries, peoples, geopolitical realities. All of these things have changed a lot in the thousands of years of known human history. The scriptures only give us snippets of information about people and cultures outside of the covenant peo...

A lot of prophecy isn’t necessarily about Jesus. At least not in an immediate sense. In the context of the Ancient Near East standing on the precipice of Assyrian, then Babylonian, invasion, many nations were unsure of the future. Isaiah was given divine knowledge as to what awaited each nation and people-group. In these chapters, he issues a series of prophecies about some of these ancient peo...

Abigail joined me for today’s segment. We read chapters in Isaiah about the promise of the New Creation, condemnation of Israel’s enemies, warnings of the Day of the Lord, and comfort for God’s people despite much chastening. The session is closed with a psalm of pleading with God to end his silence and save his people. It is a shorter session today. It still requires a good deal of reflection ...

"The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterou...

Today we get a depiction of God’s heavenly throne room, followed by several prophecies about the coming Messiah in the context of the coming Assyrian invasion and the overrunning of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. A lot of these different lines of prophecy are difficult to suss out, as these things did not historically overlap. Many apocalyptic saying in the bible will only be fully understood ...

We begin Isaiah today. The prophecies of Isaiah are interconnected throughout the New Testament. Jesus was the fulfillment of dozens of prophecies. In the aftermath of the resurrection of Christ, it was the prophecies of Isaiah that helped people make sense of John the Baptist and Jesus. God’s masterpiece, laid forth centuries before Jesus, has continued to be fleshed out over the millennia. We...

Let’s Do this!
Have a merry Christmas! I'm very grateful for all you do, may the Lord be given glory in abundance through the work he is doing through you. Prayers for the strength you need and contentment in all.
When Herod killed all the babies, wondering how John the Baptist escaped this event. Always wondering what “ Baptize with Holy Spirit AND FIRE “ means … the fire part

Hearing your commentary today, I am reminded of the ancient teaching, Scripture interprets Scripture. The unclear by the clear. May God transform us 🙏
Let’s do this!
Interesting here where it uses the word “women” in a somewhat derogatory way (ch19 v16) as “they will be like women” and I have seen some online debates about changing that to gender neutral … I believe it occurs in 1 other place.
Let’s do this!
Let’s do this!
Let’s do this!
Let’s do this! Love the angel sending Philip along the desert road. The whole world needs the gospel, but he obediently goes where sent, even if seemingly sparse or deserted. One never knows what God has in store for us to do, meet, or share to, even in the desert.
Let’s do this!
Jesus was angry that the temple was being turned into a place for financial greed and theft, even by religious leaders. Not because money was coming in.
Why do you believe in sola scriptura?
Let’s do this! Fig tree parable….Am I producing fruit? Are you? … are we wasting the ground we’re planted in? Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. I love the salt example…. STAY SALTY! Great set of parables showing God’s love for little ‘ol’ us; the lost sheep, the lost coin, the prodigal son. No servant can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and wealth.
Let’s do this! Yes, long chapters….
Amen brother.....so many churches never tell their people to read the bible......a lack of knowledge is why they perish
Interesting the BSB v1:37 says “no word of God will ever fail” where my translations have always said “nothing is impossible with God” interesting …. (My pastor’s sermon last Sunday on that exact line/verse. This Zechariah prophecy sounds familiar … 😂 Still wondering what “he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit AND FIRE (?)” …. Always wondered about this term… and fire. Know your scriptures … when Jesus tempted and in battle with the devil, he quoted scriptures… how are we to battle if we don’t have that sWORD for battle. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Each tree is known by its own fruit.
Fire is a painful purifying agent. I have always taken his words to mean that Jesus, the refiner's fire, purifies us of our iniquities. The Holy Spirit's manifestation as tongues of flame on the day of Pentecost fits with this understanding, I believe. The Holy Spirit isn't to be seen only as a comfort, but also as a convicting and purifying agent. That process for us sinner is...painful.
Let’s do this!
Ok but where will I find a Bible published before 300AD?
The whole Bible was written before 300 ad.
I don't find that to be a very important question. When you learn about the presence of oral traditions from the beginning, as well as the commonality of published canon lists by various councils, it becomes pretty clear that this level of seriousness was given to the words of God long before any sort of ultimate codex was produced. The fact that we have three extant codexes from the ancient world, or even one, is quite remarkable to me. The bible is THE most reliable book from the ancient world, without any serious rival.
Let’s do this! As for us, we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. This One will be our peace. What does the Lord require of you? * do justice * love kindness * walk humbly But as for me, I will be on the watch for the Lord. I will wait for the God of my salvation.
I've been working through the prophets as part of my lectionary, so hopefully I'll be able to pick up on some shared imagery and intertextual relations while I'm listening. The intertextual relations can be dizzying at times.
Long one today
Oh my gosh yes. I was tired halfway through...

Let’s do this! My wife is abigailian to the core…… does that make me a Nabal?
Let’s do this! Great timing as I have to lead men’s study on 1 Sam 29 & 30 tomorrow.
Let’s do this! Wow, just figured out David lied to Ahimelech about the King’s involvement in him being there. knew Ahimelech was innocent, but never noticed David’s deception
Something that stands out to me about Johnathon, and I really want to try and find time to dig into this. The phrase of loving Johnathon as himself, just as we are commanded to love our neighbor as ourself. And the act of removing his outer garment and placing them on David, which of course is often the same language we use of Christ's giving imparting us righteousness. Prayers for safe travels as you continue!
Do you still go to church on Sundays after your message of truth about the Sabbath?
Yes. The early church assembled on the Lord’s Day. I’m not any better than them.
Let’s do this! Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. For the battle is the Lord’s! For God is my refuge!
How do you know you have the right canon of scripture?
One has to believe that God worked throughout the history of the church to render the right decisions. We confess the Holy Ghost and have to believe that God was active in the determinations of the ecumenical councils. The establishment of the Christian canon was a process that took place over hundreds of years under the patience guidance of the Holy Ghost. While it is one's right to question the canon, doing so does jeopardize one's doctrine and salvation.
@ So you believe that God worked through the councils, that’s interesting. But you don’t have their canon of scripture, so what is the justification of yours? Did the Church have normative authority to bind the body of believers dogmatically? Do you think the councils erred? And no, questioning one’s presuppositions does not put one’s salvation at risk. That’s absurd.
@@jacobfavret1729 I didn't say anything about questioning presuppositions. The canon I acknowledge was indeed that approved by the councils. If you're looking to argue, you'll probably find more fun on another channel. If you want to privately correspond, you can write me at nowatamethodists@gmail.com.
Let’s do this!
You must of built up a lot of reading before your trip! Thanks for doing that! Let’s do this! I am actually in two different studies in 1 Sam …. Much discussion over whether Saul was saved or not? You thoughts? From the witch episode (ch28), Samuel says “you and your sons will be with me tomorrow” … making it seem they would be??? Maybe?
Following the actual doctrine the apostles followed in the book of Acts as they did, the same doctrine they got martyred for. Acts2:38 salvation is the only salvation they followed and died for.
They are hypocrites, but me? I am perfect…
Let’s do this.
Luke warm Christians. I'm guilty of this..
My pastor at Denton Bible, Tommy Nelson, was once a national speaker for Campus Crusade and Navigators to many college campuses and had the biggest Christian Singles Bible study on Tuesday Nights in Dallas for years (late 90’s and early 00’s) and was semi-famous in those college circles for his series on Song of Solomon and a guide for dating and relationships. He also tied it to our relationship with God and God to the church. But been through this study multiple times. Great stuff.
Let’s do this! Do not awaken love before it’s time. I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.
Jesus is not fine with that, but He loves us so much that He will let us choose of our own will what we do.
Let’s do this!
I think it was 2021 I went through Judges last 3 chapters all on the way to work listening to an audio book, part of a Bible study I was doing. Ruth was the following day. I can say with confidence I feel now like I did then and you do now 😂.
Let’s do this!
Romans 3:10-12 NLT [10] As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous- not even one. [11] No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. [12] All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one. I love how Paul anticipated a righteous person standing up in protest to say something then Bam NO NOT A SINGLE ONE! I can almost here him yelling it.
Most people do not preach the same message that the deciples of Christ preached. (Luke 24:45-47) verse 45 He opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, verse 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. They went to Jerusalem and preached to devout Jews, out of every nation under heaven. (Acts 2:5) In (Acts 2:38) Then Peter said unto them,,Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. This is the first salvation message that was preached. It is still the only salvation message! This is where the problem is! This is what Jesus told them to preach! (2 Timothy 3-4) Paul warned Timothy! I am warning the lost also! ❤
