Most Versatile Backpack Ever? || Mystery Ranch 2 Day Assault Review
I wish this bag had an extra compartment for the laptop, it would be the perfect bag
I like to count the rear slot as a type of pocket; quick access to my phone & amazingly secure (within reason, of course)
Yes, I believe they show it used as a phone pocket on their website. I can see that for sure, but personally, I felt like it’s a little less secure than I’d like it to be for that.
Great except for the huge ugly non removable Goruck patch
Is this the medium size one?
There’s the 12, the 24 and the 72. This is the 24, so yes, the middle size.
Ballistic meaning we are stopping bullets? What do we mean by ballistic naterial?
🤣 Kind of, but not really. I mean, I wouldn’t put it between me and a bullet and expect a good outcome. Here’s a definition: Ballistic nylon is a thick, durable, synthetic fabric originally developed by DuPont during World War II for military use, specifically as material for flak jackets to protect soldiers from shrapnel and debris. While it wasn’t effective against bullets, it gained a reputation for its exceptional toughness and resistance to wear and tear.
There are 2 type GR3. How many liter is it?
This backpack is great dude.
It is a great bag!
Great video! If I wanted to use their pro plus camera cube and stick a z8 + 180-600 in it, how awkward would it be to take it out with that strap across the middle?
Thanks! Can’t say for sure, I don’t have that cube or that camera. I can say it’s not an issue for me with my Canon R8 and a long lens in the essentials cube though.
Not the cockroaches!! 😂
You never showed the laptop compartments! Will it fit a 17 inch laptop?
Based on published dimensions for the 31L, I’m guessing no.
I have both the CTB26 and the CTB20 and the former gets used at least once a month for shorter 3-4 day trips. Zero complaints and I appreciate how EG has been thoughtful with the design. The top quick access pocket is perfect for the CAP0.5 I use for my tech accessories.
@@tkozikow As of now, still my favorite bag to travel with and just overall one of my favorite bag designs period. Not perfect, but about as close as it gets! It just works so well for me.
@Pack_roam this bag seems to get universal praise from reviewers which you rarely see. I do, however, find it hard to distinguish between some of their products and I never could figure out how to make the CAP1 work for me, but I have three of the CAP0.5 along with the packing cube which I use on every trip. I just wish the zippers were easier to distinguish.
Alpaka has absolutely no customer service. Once you buy from them, good luck with any customer service issues!
Great tip with those loose ends, I've been fidgeting with it endlessly, thanks
@@M4rs0 my pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thank you. I just got my new GR3. Just FYI it was redesigned and no longer has the hip belt itself or the passthrough. Apparently not very many people were actually using it according to GoRuck. So I can see why maybe they decided not to include it any longer but I don't think the price was reduced. Scratching my head a bit why they decided to eliminate the passthrough because this just makes it very difficult or almost impossible to add one. Not a big deal for my use case of rollaboard replacement for softer adventure travel where I lash a daypack to it. Hard adventures I will use my traditional Osprey hiking pack for that.
Thanks for watching! That’s a shame on the hip belt. I’ll be honest, I haven’t used mine but I fully expect to. That’s part of the reason I bought it.
Gonna buy this for my solo travel to Japan. I am going as light as possible because I plan on walking so much per day. Thanks for the review
Thanks for watching! Nice! That should work out well for you. You going to go for the 30L or 36L?
@@Pack_roam 30L. Trying to go as light as possible since I'll be walking a lot.
@ got it. Well… have fun! Safe travels!
Thank you ! Yes and I ordered the Versa!!! And oh yes, the piece of jewelry really isn't cheap!!! Best regards from Germany /Berlin Moch
Awesome! And you’re right, definitely not cheap!
I bought the 30L. For me I’ve been targeting 32-35L. I thought if I was able to swing 30L I could save some weight because the bag empty is very light. I didn’t realize the exterior pockets volume was considered in the total volume. The 26L main body volume on the 36L is too small for me. It’s unfortunate because it’s well made & very light. I went with the slightly heavier, 1.18kg, MEC Outpost 35L.
Yeah, the exterior pocket volume is a significant portion of the overall volume which, to me, is a bit misleading. That MEC bag looks interesting. Significantly cheaper than the Dragonfly as well.
@ Exactly. I’ve never heard of volume/capacity including exterior pockets. If it were a 35L ‘main body’ bag I would’ve kept it. The MEC is a great bag. Not as light as the ULA but the capacity I was looking for. The materials, so far, have been very durable. The shoulder straps & back padding are very comfortable. The exterior has a very sleek look. That’s because of its lack of a exterior pocket(s). Their unique solution to no exterior pocket is a interior pocket that is easily accessible from the top of the pack. It’s difficult to describe but from my experience it works well & makes whatever you put in it very secure. And yes the price is very reasonable for a bag of this quality. Along with buying the ULA I have a Peak Design 45L & several other pricey bags. I’m more than willing to pay for a quality backpack. That said, I believe I saw the MEC at well under $100 as I type.
@ Yes, I had to do a double-take when I saw the price right now on sale for <$80 U.S. Poly coated 840d exterior. 1680d shoulder straps… that should be a durable bag. I’ll have to add it to my list.
Great review! Did the crinkly sound reduce or lessen after you used it for a while?
Thanks! Not really, and it’s even more crinkly when it’s cold. Stayed away from dyneema for a long time because of the crinkle, but it doesn’t bother me now.
Whoa! New year, new hat! 😉
BIG change for me… went from gray with patch to gray slick 😂
@@Pack_roam So proud! 👏🏻lol
🙌🏻
Love you video, do you know any source I can get one of this bag?
Thanks! You familiar with the Carryology Classified group on Facebook?
Glad I watch this because I was about to buy one, now I’m not.. Two deciding factors was 1, lack of a lower compression sack and 2, not a full clam opening, 3 the butterfly top pocket… Great video but the bag definitely isn’t for me, thank you
@@bigmartin glad my video helped you come to a conclusion! Thanks for watching.
Does this fit an 11" ipad? (Doesn't need to fit in a sleeve for me)
Mine does not. It’s a HAIR too small. Won’t zip around the corners.
@ that’s a bummer :(
Where do all these cool patches come from?! I feel like the community is keeping them a secret! lol. Great review
Thanks! The patch in the video came from suburban.com.hk . @maxpaxco on instagram or maxpax.store makes some really cool patches!
Excellent load out. The set up on the bag is clever for your camera chest pack.
Thanks! I like that setup for my camera carry.
Thanks for the insight about the water bottle pockets not protecting the rest of the pack from a spill. Important to know and negates the point of them as water bottle pockets.
Yep, kinda does.
Going close to 1 year with my 2 DAP, initally thought it was too small (coming from a larger ruck sack bag) but turned out to be just the right size. I did add a small bag on the sides to the 2 DAP for my keys, changed the zippers with plastic tabs,, and added strap fasteners. Also added something bright to the velcro part. Helps me to identify my black bag easier and look less 'military' So far it holds up the same almost new. I tend to chuck lots of stuff in my bag on trips but it has hold up well regardless of weight. No signs of tearing/wear yet. Worth the money imo.
Awesome! Definitely a great bag. Good size, versatile and so comfortable to carry.
thanks for introducing me to Alpaka. that's exactly what I was looking for. i just bought the ALPAKA Bravo Sling Max V2.
Awesome! Love Alpaka! They make great gear.
Great review, thank you for this! Never heard of Vanquest before seeing this. I currently rock the Bellroy Venture 2.5L (your sling of the year) but over the holidays got a pair of Rayban Metas which have a hard shell and now the Bellroy is a bit tight to fit my EDC. I love love the Bellroy, but with all my gear it's just too tight. How much bigger is the Dendrite large compared to the Bellroy? Looking at the dimensions, it appears partially negligble (about .5" wider and .6" higher)? I am looking for a relatively small factor like the Bellroy, just a tad bigger. Thanks!
Thanks! They’re pretty close in size, including depth. The Dendrite seems slightly bigger, but I’m not sure this is going to be the way to go if you’re already stuffed out in the Bellroy Venture. I put my hard case in there, and I think it accommodates it better than the Venture Ready, but I’m not sure what else you’re loading out. Maybe the TEKKO 6, but that’s significantly bigger, or the Bellroy Lite sling mini? That’s 4L. Or the Code of Bell X-POD II? That’s still a favorite, and it expands/contracts based on loadout.
Patagonia Black Hole duffel for the win! I have a 40L and 55L I switch out depending on how much I need for a trip. I scored the 40L for a great discount gently used at REI's Re/supply. Love these pack with me videos so keep 'em up and happy new year!
Thanks! Glad you like the videos... I've got more pack with me videos planned for the near future! Love the Black Hole, actually surprised how much. I definitely want the 55L now, possibly the 70L. Unfortunately, I did NOT get a discount. Good tip though, I never thought to check Re/supply.
Appreciate the shout out 🤝 I passed on the dyneema since I already own the robic 21L but I did pick up the robic 26L for $89 yesterday. Not excited about the color (seaspray) but been wanting the 26L for domestic travel. Also wanted to compliment you on all the new graphics, they look REALLY good. I especially like the IG graphic, super cool how it rolls out!
Appreciate the heads-up! 🙏 I probably would have missed that sale. I don't have anything Seaspray, but the color has been growing on me. And at that price... definitely a good buy. Thanks! Wanted to start the year off with some upgraded graphics.
Gore-tex is dead. You forgot the kitchen sink
Inconceivable! I use checklists! [checks notes]… nope, kitchen sink was NOT on the list. 🤣 But, you’re right, I took a lot of sh… stuff. It’s a road trip! Lot’s of room. When in doubt, pack it out!
How does this bag compare to the GR2 26l? I’m primarily concerned with which of the two bags can hold more and still fit in a personal item sizer .
Technically, I don’t think either of them fit personal item size limits. I primarily fly United for work travel, and they definitely both exceed their “personal item” size limits. From experience, I’ve never had an issue getting the CTB26 under seat and it’s 9” deep. I don’t have a 26L GR2, but it’s spec’d at 7.25” deep. I would think it’d fit under a seat just fine. The 40L GR2, on the other hand, will NOT fit under a seat fully loaded out. Learned that the hard way.
Great review. I've had the GR2-40l for a few years and it's ridiculously good in all aspects. I'm 6,6 & 220lbs - and fits perfectly on me. It's comfortable to wear even on hour long hikes. Granted it's fairly expensive and by far the most expensive backpack I've ever bought. But after 3 years of hard use it still looks new except that it doesn't feel so stiff as when I got it.
Thanks! Such an awesome bag. Still my favorite for one bag personal travel. I agree… so comfortable to carry.
Great video thanks!
@@Milan-wc6tt thanks for watching!
Great review. Thorough, terrific insight. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
As always, hugely late to the party. I’m really liking these and hoping/trying to get one ordered at some point. I’m new to all the different fabrics about these days (when I last looked at this sort of stuff, the choices you tended to have was 500D or 1000D 😂). Just got a MR Dragon 2.0……do you have any reference to how Ultra 800X feels/compares to X50? What were your reasons for picking the 800X and has it lived up to your expectations?
Ultra is woven, so it feels similar to Cordura but the fibers are smoother, kind of a plasticy feel. Has a bit of krinkle to it but less than most x-pac and way less than dyneema, if you’re familiar with that material. I went with ultra 800 because it’s tough! Very high tear strength and abrasion resistance. I love ultra, and have quite a few bags and slings in ultra. Carryology provides a great description on their GORUCK collab Kaiden 3.0 release article if you search for it on their website. Challenge Sailcloth says Ultra 100 has double the tear strength and almost double the abrasion resistance as 500D Cordura and Ultra 800 tear and abrasion numbers are significantly higher than 100.
@@Pack_roamWell, I’ve put my name down……but I’m not holding out much hope for my less than 10% chance 😂
@@Smatnm well… good luck!🍀
Amazing what these guys have made despite what theyre dealing with. Def want one of these
Definitely! Hard to imagine operating in that situation and still making amazing gear.
Have the "Disruptive" Camo pattern. History of the pattern is interesting, and you can really tell the quality of the materials in person.
Very cool look to it. Definitely “stands out, while blending in”.
Thanks for this detailed alpaka v1 and v2 metro sling, just keep it up and more reviews .....
Thanks for watching! Will do!
We are happy to see that the TEKKO made your list along with two very solid sling bags in their own right; we are thrilled with the response and feedback we have gotten so far. Thank you again for the support, Kevin! - Justin @ Vanquest
Great sling! Really enjoyed testing it out and getting to know it.
when will this company will work on something with gun carry just like this
Love my 36L. Amazing bag
Now that I've got the 30L, I want to try the 36L as well. Would probably be perfect for one-bag personal travel for me. What's your favorite part about the bag?
@@Pack_roam Honestly, the weight is my favorite part. Hitting that 7kg limit has been tough but this bag makes it easier. I am also a packing cube person so I love the open space. And I always carry a rain jacket in the front mesh pocket. :) There is a lot I like.
@@jeffone the weight is my favorite part of the 30L, it’s so light compared to some of my other favorite bags! And I’m the same way… I tend to prefer the open space bags and bring my own organization.
Does the 36L fit under most aircraft under seat?
@@Youdude2 36 L is hit and miss. The 30 L is usually fine but every airline and aircraft is different.
My favorite is the Alpaka Go Sling Mini.
ALPAKA makes great stuff! Saw your video on the Go Sling Mini, nice work!
@Pack_roam thank you!
Good top 3 picks. My favorite sling is the Nitecore SLBO5 at 2L capacity. I made mods to it, but it's great for just the essentials carry.
Thanks! The SLB05 looks like a pretty cool sling. May have to pick one up at some point. What kind of mods did you do?
@Pack_roam I replaced the stock hardware with Fillock Split V buckles, adding tri-glides to keep the straps in place. Keyrings were used to keep ithe grab handle from slipping out and wrapped with paracord. I also removed the clips used to attach the shoulder strap to the bag and added better hardware. I also added Velcro One-wrap to the bottom of the bag to stow the shoulder strap when not in use.
35l gr3)
The one I used the most was the waste bag from garage built gear in brown waxed canvas. It’s a great sling and great for large pocket dump sling.
@@JonCross That one has been on my list for a while. I haven’t met a Garage Built Gear product I didn’t like!
@ same want to try out the new grunt sling he made. Also glad I found your channel you do a great job and some real world reviews.
I appreciate that, thanks! I’m glad u found my channel too!
My favourite is the Evergoods CAS2, with the Bellroy 2.5L a close 2nd. The Trakke Banana Crossbody Bag would be in 3rd place for me.
@@houserhythm I’ve been sitting on a CAS2 review since they’re sold out until Feb. Didn’t want to post a review for a bag that’s not available, but I agree, excellent sling. I’ve been eyeballing the Trakke Banana. Think I’m may pull the trigger on that based on your endorsement.
@@Pack_roam The Banana feels very much like a simplified CAS2. Don't ecpect too much from it - it's literally just 2 compartments with 2 slip pockets at the back of the front/larger one. But I like it as a pocket dump. And it looks & feels nice, Trakke's waxed canvas is some of the nicest I've felt in my hands. PS: had no idea about the CAS2, the EU distributor has them in stock ever since the v2 came out at the beginning of the year.
@ copy that. Thanks. It does have a great look to it. Now I’m debating though, because I’ve wanted a Bairn Pro for a while now too 😬 and a Storr for that matter. So many bags…
What was your favorite sling for the year? The one you used the most…
Kargo loculus because it is my dog walk sling. And packolab samurai is getting close.
Pakt 5L sling (the original one). Asymmetrical harness is an essential for me which considerably reduces options, the TomToc could be an option but it still feels too much like an Aer Day Sling 2 clone.
@@DaemonViews I have yet to try anything from Kargo, but they’re on my list.
@@MrJed_s was the original pakt offered in a burnt orange? I remember a while back I really wanted a pakt sling in orange but wound getting the Bellroy Lite sling instead.
@@Pack_roam the loculus is highly recommended I prefer it over the greenroom136 and chrome industries one
Great review! I’m thinking of adding this. The big question is Dyneema, Robic or Cordura. Price aside what would be your recommendation. Thank you in advance.
Thanks for watching! That’s a great question. With the ROBIC, the 45L version is >1.5lbs lighter than the Cordura 45L. The Cordura version is over 5lbs empty! Unless you think you need the abrasion resistance of the Cordura I don’t think it’s worth the extra weight. The Dyneema version is ~3/4 of a lb lighter than the Cordura, heavier than the ROBIC, but I like that material better than the ROBIC. I think I’d go with the Dyneema. Interestingly, it doesn’t look like any of them come with the hip belt anymore? I’ve never actually used mine, but still nice that it came with it.
@ Thank you for your insight & recommendation. Keep up the good work!
@ will do! Thanks!
@@Pack_roam, on a side note, I went with the GR-1, instead of the M23, based on your video. I can’t thank you enough. I find your video and insight on the GR-3, & the above recommendation on Dyneema, to be most valuable. Thank you, thank you!
@ My pleasure! Awesome to hear it was helpful! The GR1 is such a great bag. I think it’ll always be one of my favorites, if not my favorite!
Can someone please tell me where can I buy the dark oak version, I don't seem to find it in stock anywhere.
