Arthas Menethil: Warlock/Paladin [Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Character Build]
Hello Adventurer's!
Welcome Back to the channel!
This week we're making a Warlock, and diving into the story of Arthas Menethil, fallen Knight of the Silver Hand, turned Death Knight of the Scourge.
We'll be combining the Undead Patron Warlock, with the Oathbreaker Paladin, to create a Warhorse riding, Rune-Blade wielding, Cold and Necrotic Damage dealing juggernaut; with plenty of hit points, damage, and survivability tricks.
I'm really excited about this build, mainly because it hits the theme of a Deathknight right on the head, and the level progressions mirror Arthas' journey down the path of darkness.
Let me know what you think of the build in the comments down below!
Come back next week...

I like that build and it gave me good inspiration, but I have to make some adjustments for mine because I want the Tiefling, so no extra feat on Level 1. 😅
@@ovoss89 Devil Death Knight! I like it! I was say gonna if you start level 1 in warlock then you wouldn’t need the Magic Initiate Wizard origin Feat. But then you miss out on heavy armor from Paladin, so that might not be worth it. Actually after some thinking, you could do without Tough at level one, and then at level 7, warlock level 2, take the Lessons of the Old One’s invocation to get an extra Origin Feat, and take tough then.
Wait so at that point if you casted Divine Favor, had Form of Dread and Spirit Shroud with a level 5 warlock spell slot, you would deal on average : 6d6+48+6d8 which is close to a 96 damage per turn, or 99 accounting for the great weapon fighting fighting style, though that doesn't account for when you miss attacks. Still, it's a lot with relatively little ressource expenditure, and that's not even counting divine and eldritch smites or even crits 😅
@alexandredeberdt4066 Yeah the damage is nuts here! Next time I get to play in a high level campaign I’m gonna bring this build for sure. Paladin/Warlock is famous for a reason it seems!
Just a slight correction, Spirit shroud doesn't do an additional d8 for every spell slot level upcast. With a fourth level slot The damage increases by 1d8. But then it takes two spell slot levels to increase again. Also, at around 18:50 you say you have a +13 to hit. I'm trying to figure out what I missed. I know you would have +5 from your proficiency bonus, and +5 from your charisma. What is the other +3 coming from? Now I see that you maxed your charisma after that. So now I'm even more confused.
@@brynwtsn thanks for pointing that out! I didn’t mention the scaling of the spell because I’m trying to keep the run times down. But it’s an important clarification. The damage increases with spell slot levels 5,7, and 9. At 18:50 I was referring not to the to hit, but to the damage modifier. It was at a +13 because using Aura of Hate, and Great weapon master, we are adding our charisma (+4)twice and our proficiency (+5)once. So +13 total. Our to hit modifier would be a +9 at this point. Thank you for the comment!
Plz theory craft, a class build ,that prevents enemies, from gaining hp to heal,
@@pwog my new video, Arthas Menethil actually does that pretty well! It’s got chill touch, and Spirit Shroud, both of which shut down healing for a turn! The Super Saiyan Conqueror video also uses Spirit Shroud.
Please do not use ai. You may believe, falsely, that it simplifies your workload, but seriously, just.... Just don't. It's offensive to actual artists. Commission someone to actually do art for you, learn it yourself, or just don't use art in your videos. It's painfully obvious when you do, and it looks horrible, always.
Bro chill 🤣 You are telling him to learn to draw or pay an artist, which he may not know or cannot do, just enjoy the video, don't be rude
@@Irokutarabelmont I understand where you are coming from. I reached out to some artists whose work I admire when I was planning to start the channel. However commissioning four art pieces a month for my weekly uploads would be hundreds of dollars. I work full time to support my family, so I definitely can’t afford that. And the channel is too small for any artist to be interested in a sort of exposure compensation for their art. As for learning to make the art myself, I’m already stretching my time a bit alongside my real world responsibilities to make the channel, so I can’t attempt to learn a new skill and make these videos. But thank you for the feedback! In a perfect world I would love to partner with an artist, but realistically it’s not feasible at this point in time.
Are you an “artist” or are you taking offense on behalf of a theoretical one?
@Xenochrome If you don't see the harm ai is causing in visual media, your scope is much too small. You're the kind of person that would ask to pay for art in exposure, aren't you?
Bro I really like these videos, but please for the love of all that draws breath under the sun, change that music/speaking mix. With headphones, it’s still quite difficult to hear you over the mythic violin theme. Nice build, as always.

here some comments: 5e cantrip do no significant damage at all. The only cantrip that can kin of compete are booming blade, green flame blade and true strike and only when weilded by class with a single attack (like a rogue) or a class that can use it with his extra attack feature (like a eldritch knight valor bard or bladesinger wizard) or without class feature (warlock agonizing blast other invocation, but even that, in 2024 and eldritch blast build deal very low damage, so low that Treantmonk no longer uses it as his baseline (defining what "good enough" damage is) The fighter dip is useless I know you are not an optimizing channel, but even flavor wise, fighter do not fit Storm, she has nothing of a fighter. much better go full sorcerer 20, you gain your spell faster and that armor proficiency is not worth it delaying it. Especially if you are not using truestrike, the weapon mastery from fighter is wasted. If you REALLY want fighter for some reason go fighter at level 1 for the extra HP at least But if it just the armor that you want your best option would be to go cleric or druid instead so at least you do not waste a spellcaster level and still gain your medium/heavy and gain a few more spell option to prepare each morning in 2024 Gust got replace with Elementalism, which do everything Gust do but also let you play with the other elements, giving an even better Storm feeling you don't need to waste your feat on elemental adept, you already have 3 elemental type in your build. If you face a monster resistant to lightning just use a cold spell. And the minimum of 2 damage is not worth a feat. Once again this does not make you feel like the character Storm. I mean in the shows I never saw Storm trying to fight a coldbase mutant with colder wind... she strike him with lightning. When facing a mutant resistance to lightning she freezes it. you are not building a Pikachu who "aim for the horn" here...
Thank you for the comment! Yeah you're right, full cantrip damage isn't significant at all. But I still feel like you need a cantrip that matches your character's theme just to have a free attack option. I definitely agree that the fighter dip felt awkward. I mainly went with it over Cleric or Druid so I wouldn't need a 13 Wisdom. That and the Defense Fighting Style makes the medium armor even better, I just can't stand having a low AC on my characters. I would have gone fighter first, but then the character would have no lightning spells at 1st level, and also proficiency in Strength saves instead of Charisma, which didn't feel right. But if you're starting at 3rd level than I'd say definitely start in fighter for the extra 4 Hitpoints! I did think about Elementalism, I wouldn't say that it replaced Gust, so much as its just a new spell. Gust can force movement, whereas Elementalism only creates the aesthetic effects. I think you're right about the Elemental Adept thing, especially once Transmuted spell becomes an option. I assumed it was kind of necessary for full casters, but looking back you make a good point about just swapping to a different element depending on who you are fighting. Thanks for the feedback, like I said I don't play alot of Full Casters, I usually go martial and Unga Bunga my way around, so I need all the advice I can get!
Man I've enjoyed your videos recently, but this better mic is genuinely a fantastic upgrade. Makes it's easier to have your videos playing in the background 👍
Thank you! Y'all were right, it definitely makes a big difference.
Update: DM had to cancel our session tonight, so one if our ither okayers offered ti DM a one-shot. We made level 5 characters and i played this build. Why not take Artificer initiate instead of Druid for the elixer(potion) making?
@@chriscain8515 Unfortunately Magic initiate doesn’t let you choose Half-Casters like Artificer, Paladin, or Ranger. It’s even more stringent in 2024, only allowing Wizard, Cleric, and Druid.
Hey big question is does surprise attack actually happen on every attack you take in that 1st round.
@@zachmarlow2117 It does now, as of the Mordenkainen book. I’m Volo’s guide to monsters it was only once per combat. But you know how Volo is always getting stuff wrong.

Subscribed, hope to see more of this type of stuff! Creative builds based around interesting races and their abilities, rather than generic builds that always gravitate towards variant human or custom race.
@@Kingdoms_and_Kobolds Thank you! I have a tortle wizard coming out in 3 weeks! So keep an eye for that!
It’s hard to beat the 2024 thief Rogue + a level in Wizard (for shield and absorb elements at low levels). You get fast hands, use magic device and theif reflexes. With all the Rogue abilities and expertise in Arcana, it’s the best spell caster in game, but this looks fun.
@@JustaScribble yeah this definitely isn’t a utility build, more of a stab till the fights over haha.
pretty sure the bonus 2d6 from surprise attack is only once a round.
@@hackthedungeon That would probably be more balanced, but as it’s written it doesn’t have that restriction.
@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds Sorry, it does say that in Volo's guide, but it doesn't say that in Mordenkainens. I don't have Mordenkainens, so I was going off of Volo's.
@ Oh gotcha! See I don’t have Volo’s so that makes sense haha. I wonder why they buffed it?
@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds good question. The old version also said "when you surprise a creature". So it only worked if your party had a surprise round. It may be a case of overcompensation.
@hackthedungeon Yeah they are definitely moving away from features that rely on surprise. It’s a shame because I always liked that mechanic. The new version, with disadvantage on initiative, doesn’t seem all that impactful.

@@bponcho414 Same here, I’m loving the new book!
Bugbear? As a character? Ridiculous
@@invictuscenturion8468 Haha, yeah times are changing!
Monk and Rogue? Not necessary in 2024. If sneak attack is your focus, then just go rogue. If you're wanting more monk things, then go monk. Since focus got changed to give you free bonus actions (disengage, dash, one attack), cunning action is not as important. Unless you hide a lot.
I could see a shadow monk being pretty well capable of benefitting from a bonus action. As for what rogue subclass would be best here. My bet would go to arcane trickster since that gives more spells and spell slot options. I know the spell slot progression is terrible and we still don't get a fighting style, if this were a gestalt campaign. Would you still think that this is a bad combination? (PLease access it purely on whether rogue/monk could be decent, because I know there are more powerful options out there. Fighter, ranger, barbarian, or smoke any combat starting at lvl 7 with druid CME. 😮😂😅😊)
@@ericpeterson8732 I was mainly looking for maximum attacks to benefit from the Bugbear Racial, then to maximize the sneak attack secondarily. But I totally agree there is overlap on Monk’s Focus/Cunning action.
NO, having the alert feat (or being an haregon) do not let you use reliable talent on initiative (at leas not in 2024) Reliable talent in 2024: : Whenever you make an ability check (yes initiative is an ability check) that uses one of your SKILL or TOOL proficiencies (alert or HArengon racial is NOT a skill or tool proficiency) you can treat a d20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10. So no since you do not apply a skill or tool proficiency to initiative roll, you can not reliable talent it (unless you homebrew it, but your channel is called Rules As Written... and as written alert is not a skill proficiency. you STILL qualify for Epic Boon. the level 4,6,8,12,16 feature called : Ability Score Improvement, say: {...} or another feat of your choice for which you qualify {...} and Epic boon Prerequisite is: Level 19+. When a feat require a level, that level is CHARACTER LEVEL. So technicallyif you go monk7/rogue11, you are a character level 18 then you take your 8th level in monk you are now a character level 19 and have access to a feat, you DO qualify for an Epic Boon feat. Then you go up to rogue 12 giving you access to yet an other feat and you are now character level 20 so you DO qualify for a SECOND Epic boon feat. So go ahead grab Boon of combat prowes to guarantee at least one of your hit to hit and boon of fate to lower the target saving throw to your envenom poison. or any other Epic boon (except spell recall which also require the spellcasting feature, but all the other Epic boon, as a monk8/rogue12, you qualify for them since your CHARACTER level is 19+ The only reason why at level 19 they call it Epic Boon instead of Ability Score Improvement it's to make it pop, to remind you that congratz you can now choose an Epic Boon Feat But yes any multiclass that gain a feat at level 19\20 can choose 1 or 2 Epic Boon even if they do not have 19 level in a single class.
@@sohkaswifteagle2604 yeah I missed the reliable talent thing, I was using the 2014 rules, thanks for the correction! With the epic boon I meant we didn’t qualify because we only went 5 levels in monk, so our last ability score improvement was rogue level 12, character level 17. I could have definitely gone deeper in monk for it, but I wanted that level 13 and 14 rogue feature. Thanks for the comment!
I agree with all of this though I think I woul stick to monk 12/rogue 8. 😉😁 boon of spell recall is probably best for non multiclassed arcane trickster, eldritch knight (get back your highest slot perhaps, sign me up!!!), paladin, ranger or warlock since their highest spell slots are often very close to a 4rth lvl anyway. Boon of interdimensional travel is pretty good too.
@ I’m gonna be doing a Warlock/Paladin in 2 weeks! I’m thinking I’ll go for 12/8 to maximize the Epic Boons, I haven’t really featured them in a build yet.
Man... almost sounds like a bunch of crap Wizards of the Coast came out with... like... do you think maybe a fun DM could overrule that? Man, I dunno.
great information i have a grave cleric / mercy monk use spirit shroud for damage and my KI for healing he is our party healer
@@RussellPearce-cu6vw That’s an awesome combo! I love spirit shroud on a monk, all those extra D8’s for damage.
I love the arcane hand monk from the Dungeon Dudes, since it's a ⅓ caster with some similar cast features to eldritch knight but for monk. All we really miss then is a fighting style. A 3-way gestalt campaign of arcane hand monk/thief (yes arcane trickster could work too) rogue/fighter probably battle master😅, would be sooo cooool!

@@alinkinthechain Thank you! Ranger gets a bad wrap online, but I have always enjoyed them in practice.
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds same! I think it's easily the most understood class, from it's purpose down to combat choices
Initiative is not a Skill. Reliable talent adds to Skill or Tool.
I can’t believe I missed that, you’re right! I was using the 2014 version of Reliable Talent accidentally. Thank you for the correction!
I'm probably not saying anything that hasn't been said, but the lack of longsword emphasis early on is an issue with the build. I think it makes the most sense for Monk to be the first class, transitioning into Ranger. It fits the build, and Geralt's story better, and gets us closer to that longsword-basis as fast as possible. In spite of what others appear to be saying about the Hex-build, I think there's such a thing as excessive optimization, so your creation, here, is preferable. I will say, proficiency with alchemists tools and the Poisoner's Kit are missing.
@@Icarus-I37 Yeah we do wait awhile for the longsword, starting in Monk is a cool idea since he does train at Kaer Morhen before going out into the wild, good point! I agree that I’m definitely missing the potions portion of the Witcher’s toolkit. Alchemy and Poison proficiency would have covered it perfectly!
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds Great work, just the same.
I think there's a good argument for a Monk/Warlock build, where the pact was the potion that changes them, they have access to some magic, but not a ton. You could use some of the invocations and cantrips to will in all the rune abilities. The Silvered weapon could be the Pact weapon.
@@GreyfauxxGaming You’re the second one to mention the Warlock multiclass for a Witcher! I think there’s definitely merit to it, would you go with Kensei/Hexblade, or different subclasses?
@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds I would tweak Kensai to be 2024 based, giving them weapon mastery with their kensei weapons. And I think I would go with Pact of Fiend comes with Burning hands, command, suggestion, which can all be used to mimic runes. The added Temp HP is like the defense rune, 6 levels warlock, the rest monk. Bonus points, if your blade of choice is a Scimitar, you can use the nick property to get one free offhand attack, and still use your bonus action for a free off hand attack fo 4 attacks a turn, no cost, or spend a point to flurry and do 6. You def want to take Hex just for the amount of times your gonna proc it.
Long Sword would cause sapping, which would cause creatures to have disadvantage on their next attack, if you split up the longswords attack, you could effectively nerf 3-4 people a turn.
@@GreyfauxxGaming I love Sap, it’s right up there with Nick and Cleave for my favorite masteries.

My Witcher would be a human Ranger Monster Hunter and Hex Blade Warlock. Is a better combo in my opinion..
@@JamesRichardson-u3i That’d be a fun one! It’d be tough having two different spellcasting stats, but as long as you have the ability scores for it, yours would have stronger spellcasting for sure.
Great build. Is there a document to download or a link to see it level by level?
@@joshuaward5498 not yet, but I’ve had people asking for that also. So I’ll start working on including character sheets with the videos! I’ll make sure to include them for past video as well!
Realy interesting build you have here. I like it, great work. 😊
@@joikaboela8849 Thank you so much!
i love these i wonder can you try to flesh out a dual whip wielding bugbear that would be cool
@@DrMinecraftMeme Next week’s bugbear build is going to be dual wielding! It’s going to short sword and scimitar though. A whip would be really cool for that crazy reach. Maybe a battle master fighter for a lunging attack too?
@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuildsI would give the battle master sweeping strike for the reaction attacks. Whips are really nice for monks, but the new rules are way to restrictive in what can be a monk weapon. Can't we have a nice d12 whip? I mean come on!
@ Yeah I agree, I’m doing a lot of Kensei monks for that very reason!
with your monk level you already gain a deflect attack that compete with shield for your reaction. so you might be able to grab burning hand instead of shield without loosing too much defense. You can also reflavor the deflect attack as your protective shield. Not sure why you go monster slayer instead of the new and improved hunter from the PhB 2024. instead of 1d6 against 1 target, you gin 1d8 again all injured target... When you cast hunter mark you ALSO learn the resistance and vulnerability of your target Then I<m not certain why you do not take epic boons. I mean yes the class progression chart name Epic boon at level 19, but technically they are just regular feat with a level prerequisite of character level 19. Meaning if you go monk7/ranger11 (character level 18) when you take your next level in monk you can grab an Epic Boon. and When you grab your 12th range level you can grab a SECOND epic boon
Deflect is for a single attack where as shield last until the start of your next turn. Vast difference......vast.
Yeah, Burning Hands feels like a way more proper Igni, Firebolt won't even get used much since we have our hand crossbow. But I really wanted to pair Agile Parry with Shield for a huge AC increases. But I wouldn't blame anyone for taking Burning Hands instead. I was definitely tempted to go with Hunter, Hunter's Mark telling the resistances and vulnerabilities was nice. But I think Slayer's Prey from Monster Slayer has a bad wrap, so I wanted to give it some love. Plus, since they took Whirlwind Attack and Volley out of the 2024 Hunter, I didn't love the subclass as much as I did. Especially since I just came off a Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough with the Hunter, and I was whirl-winding like a madman. But yeah, it really comes down to I wanted Magic User's Nemesis, and Supernatural Defenses. However I see how Hunter has more versatility, and consistent damage. That's a good point about the Epic-Boons, honestly I haven't done much reading into those, I'll have to check them out for later videos!
Hunters ability to look for immunities, vulnerabilities and resistances are best on an elemental warrior monk aasimar. If need be a soul knife rogue dip is right around the corner.
@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuildsWouldn't runeknight with their runes have made a lot of sense too, for the runes? Doing a lot of the same things in a way to the witcher runes.
@ That’s a clever build, sounds like fun to cycle damage types depending on your target.
W build
Thank you! I have a lot of love for the Ranger, so it was fun to build with it. I think next time I'll see what I can do with a Halberd and Cleave Hunter, using Horde Breaker for some extra attacks.
A non sun soul monk Goku. Impressive.
I played a Sun Soul/War Cleric Super Saiyan character last year. It was pretty fun, but 2024 took Divine Favor off the War Cleric spell list, so the build doesn't work as well at low levels anymore.
