Disagree 100% on the removal of mix bus compression or limiting. The mix, once approved by the label, the artist, producer etc, is the mix. Your job is to prep the songs for delivery, not make it wider, louder, make tonal changes etc. If we were mixing for vinyl or cassette either a different mix would be provided or you as the mastering engineer, would then prep the album for those mediums which would entail lower levels and adjusting low end. Otherwise, good stuff

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I completely respect your approach to mixing. It's vital to honor the mixing engineer's vision. However, it's quite common for mastering engineers to make adjustments on the mix bus (alias the master bus) for tonal optimization. And that's what my client's have been hiring me for. Over time, mastering has evolved from its technical roots as Transfer Engineering in the 60s (where engineers primarily focused on transferring audio recordings from tape to vinyl) to becoming an art form where we creatively shape the final sound.
