    I do believe there are a lot of things to discuss through the book like femininity, motherhood, womanhood, loneliness, societal expectations, etc. But at the same time I had a very difficult time reading it. I was appalled at how the main character thought about her sister regarding her decision on having a breast augmentation, while absolutely grilling her about her physical appearance, like babe you are part of the problem. I really really disliked that transphobic part, absolutely unnecessary, made me put the book time and after months i picked it up again just to finish it. More than anything i believe it's a book about the female experience, specifically in Japan, but i would not call this book feminist.

      @SevenSeasDrama 4 дня назад

      I beg to differ about her being transphobic. I don't remember the scene in details because it has been a while since I read the book, but equating curiosity and surprise to phobia is not right imo. I think most people will look at something they are not familiar with. The point is what to do with the piece of knowledge afterwards. I think being oversensitive is ultimately counterproductive. Furthermore, I know many homosexual readers who had no problems with it. Also, one of the known RUclipsrs that I have followed their transition to a woman is highly appreciative of the book and consider both the writer and the book one of their top favourites.

    For me, there are two problems with this book: 1. R.F. Kuang comes from a very privileged background, and that's helped her immensely in the publishing world. The publishing world is NOT a meritocracy, even though Yellowface portrays it as such. If you're wealthy and have had an Ivy League education like R.F. Kuang, then you'll have a better chance at being published by a major house. So when you're talking about cultural appropriation and the horrors of the publishing world despite a life of privilege, it's very hypocritical. 2. The main character isn't likable enough to be involving as a reader. I don't mind unlikable protagonists but this character is such a sanctimonious, entitled jerk that I no longer wanted to hear her story. I think the book would've had a lot more bite if the protagonist was forced by the publishing house to pass herself off as Asian-American so the book would sell more.

    Il first start with the positive points: I liked the feel of the book, and its quirky depiction of a young girl who felt she didn’t fit in to the world around her… Now on the negative: Whilst I really tried to enter the mind of the author and get a real understanding of the book and the characters I have today that this book (especially the ending) is ridiculous. I understand trauma and how it can distance people from reality and make them feel separated from society. I thought this book would take the terrible experience of the characters and the their altered interpretation of reality and delve into what it meant for them as individuals going from traumatised children into their adult lives (in what ever shape or form that took). Instead I feel like it just plopped a bunch of taboos in for shock value and had no where to go with it. The end was TERRIBLE and the most ridiculous of all!!!! Bringing cannibalism in to the mix in such an unrealistic way, void of human emotion or feeling was just crazy to me. It felt like the author wanted to quickly finish the book in an over the top way. This book had potential to go into many different avenues but sadly lost its way.

    i know this video is old, but i just read this as my intro to murakami. i absolutely loved it. the writing style was so interesting. and i agree, after dark is a direct reference to nightlife, but is also definitely a metaphor for life after darkness, depression, hardship. i loved the description of eri's deep sleep and her trying to escape as well as the descriptions of maris sleep and not feeling quite herself when she woke up. i really liked takahashi as a character too. i feel like the cellphone in the grocery store is also the feeling that your past is trying to pull you back in. i found it overall quite wholesome and a very good intro. i also love you talking about feeling nostalgia for old japan. just thinking about sitting in a dennys reading with a cigarette in hand is very nostalgic lol

    I've just read HtWS the last couple of days and was surprised about two things (although I have read many of his other novels): First, how good it is, despite the fact that for him his writing career began not before the Sheep Chase, and, second, how sad it is. I agree with almost everything you say, however I felt - or let's say, for me - it is not so much a novel about the protagonist and the Rat, their friendship seemed more like a context for what impressed me most: the tragic destiny of the three girls: the one who commits suicide, the other who had to have done that abortion and then disappeared without a trace, and the girl, you mentioned, who is tied to the hospital bed for the rest of her life. And that two twins seem to have nowhere to go and to have no place in this world. So I'm starting Pinball now ...

      Love this so much and cannot agree more. There is so much conversation about Murakami’s portrayal of women but to a certain degree, his female characters have such deep rooted pain. He shares everything about their tragedy and nothing at the same time.

    It's a beautiful book, and the first Ruth Ozeki one I read. I recommend "My Year of Meats" which I read shortly after (also feels non-fiction-y to me because of the subject matter). A little background. I'm a librarian and I noticed that this book was put on our new book shelf, which jogged my memory that I read this around a decade ago. Looking around to see if there's a reason this is getting put on our new shelf, I stumbled upon several recent reviews of this book, including yours. :)
