Used to got out on a charter out of Half Moon Bay to fish the Farallons. Saw "Stumpy's" fin once. Stumpy is an old female that is 21 feet long. There is a time of year when they (GW's) just dissappear. They discovered that when the killer whales arrive and start to sound, the great whites drop to the bottom and swim out along the ocean floor towards Hawaii. Staying along the bottom lessens their chance of getting ambushed by the orcas.

For an animal that is suppose to be endangered there is allot of footage of them all around the world

I believe CA will be be forced to cull some white sharks in about 15 years. It will have been about 30 years since white sharks became protected and you will have had almost three new generations become fully mature and reproductive. There are about 60 reproducing females on the northern CA coast alone (not to mention the Southern and Baja Peninsular populations), giving birth to between 2 to 10 pups every other year, thats potentially about 100 to 200 added to the northern CA population alone every year. Of course there will be an attrition rate but there will eventually be too many of them on parts of the CA coast - the public won't accept the increasing injuries and deaths and their inability to go in the water with virtually nil safety margin. It's very well documented they like being close to shore and this won't change as they predate mainly on seals, sea lions, stingrays, penguins which all live right on the coast. The white shark enthusiasts, marine biologists etc are not discussing this issue publicly but it is worth thinking about because with full protection of the species, it is going to happen.
