Great, the character pretty good, I like it
i like your tuorials its very understanding and simple
Its crazy how it takes thousands of drawings to create a 30 minute cartoon episode to an hourlong animated movie.
The Secret of NIMH was a massive influence and definitely impacted my direction as an artist. Likewise, I grew up loving classic adventure writers like Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs, so Atlantis has a special place in my heart too. Happy to see these demos.
Delighted to find this channel. Discovered it while searching "traditional animation on paper". Seeing other artists at work tends to make me want to start drawing, myself.
The first pencil Prismacolor noir 935 can't erase properly because it's a coloured pencil. Coloured pencils can erase a bit, but not fully.
Thank you for explaining that simply
I think he's using onion skin technique 😅
Thank you, teacher. I have listened to your class carefully and made great progress. It is really useful to me.
Honestly, I'm a guitar player and the music is driving me nuts. I'm trying to pay attention to what you're saying and all I hear is this awful noodling guitar that's trying to sound like jazz and it's just not there. Having background music is fine, even preferred, but you're going to need something that doesn't compete with what you're saying. It's endlessly meandering.
I wanna be an official animator one day, and I'm heavily inspired by Disney and old cartoons. Thanks for your work!!
I was fortunate enough to get this recommend to me! I look forward to your future videos! 😊
Wow. It’s crazy how much goes in for just a simple phrase. Thank you for taking the time to break it down.
Omg gosh, it’s the newest Disney character “that doesn’t have a story yet”😉😂😅
Thanks...❤
I love how you make animation look so simple and fun. As an animator (not that great at it lol) I can get burn out so simply and he somehow seems to solve all of my burnout lol
The way you cycle through the pages with such rhythmic flow is beautiful.
Thanks. I will try
The child star voice of Anne Marie was killed by her abusive dad before this ended up being the last time acting.
Thank you!
you, sir, are a national treasure :)
I second this!
loving this channel!!!
Muito legal esse canal, Thanks from Brazil.
Fantastic video! I’ve been an artist all my life, but only recently started studying animation, so this is immensely helpful!
THE BEST channel ever 😍
At least this is much cheaper than Don Bluth University.
I just rewatched The Secret of NIMH and couldn't help but note how wonderfully Jenner was animated as I read you were the lead animator of that character. You are a true master of your craft!
The correct term for it is extremes and breakdowns, not in-between.
Lindo!!! Adoro essas animações feitas a mão e na mesa de luz!! Obrigado e abraço do Brazil!!
To think all the animated films I grew up with were made through this painstaking process stretching over hundreds of hours, makes me appreciate the Animators so much more.
I pretty much cut the in-between drawings to a 4 frame ( if you can image that ) interval as opposed to drawing every tick. It's chunky compared to smooth like a film or video ( not much filming today ) but you understand the idea. 😅
Muito agradecida!
Gawd, I remember having to learn this, I had to use a non photo blue pencil since my mass would be off....to be honest I still do..
such a delight to watch you animating and conveying so much things in so few and confident lines. I wish my drawings could tell so much with so few lines like yours! You're really a master of the craft!
Wonderful, thank you for the video! I'm not even an animator but I still draw characters so this is super useful.
A true artist at work, magnificent as always. All the love from Mexico
I subscribed to your channel
Thanks!! - John
,, brilliant sir
Love it as always, thank you 😍❤
Sir where is 2,4,6,8,10 paper sheet
I'd assume this was going to be "shot on twos" or if this were done in a film camera, they'd take two frames per drawing.
Thanks for reply
cool!
Thanks!! - John
Your videos are great. I've learned a lot more quickly than with other channels. But "Breakfast Club" makes me cringe. Where I live in the world, it's no where near "breakfast" and I can watch these videos any time I want. Sorry. It just sounds last millennium, and, these days, kind of creepy. Other than that, I LOVE your videos.
Thanks for the feedback! Breakfast Club was originally for a different series I was doing on my website but we decided to put them on RUclips as well. We will be moving away from that as the channel continues but are using these videos to get started for now!

Thanks! - John
thanks for these I have a short film and built a Multiple plane camera and Im giving myself a full year to learn to do and fully handdrawn animated short
Golden hands!
Thank you!! - John
@stephanos61 Hi ! Your current problem is that you add so many inbetween drawings to make your animation not only fluid but interesting, the reason why is, by only using a couple of key drawings ( I guess, with some big differences in shape and spacing ) you lack structure within your animation. Maybe you can try another way to plan your shots : Let say 2 seconds, so 48 frames. First, like you use to do, you draw your 5-6 key poses, then, DON'T DRAW YOUR INBETWEENS YET! instead, shoot your key poses in order to have a basic understanding of your timing. Then, imagine you need to slow down when entering one of your pose, you know that you'll need some drawings closer to the final key pose. So, you can draw a special drawing : the breakdown which isn't a simple inbetween but a special pose in itself that connects your keys with an excentric action. From this point, you can add some regular inbetweens straight ahead because the complex Key poses and breakdowns will give you the limits you need within your 2 seconds shot. Maybe it's a bit confusing, but that's a safe way to keep your animation under control. Another advice is to storyboard your shot : If you know what you're supposed to do, then it will be easier to cancel the extra drawings that inflate your animation. Even in straight ahead animation you must keep the actions as simple as possible. Everything has to be done on purpose. Preston Blair's manual is an amazing starting point to build your skills as a classic animator. Have a good day.
the biggest hurdle for me when it comes to inbetween is wondering how many drawings I'll need to plan for, and understanding the timing charts. I time myself with 24fps in mind, so I KNOW i need roughly say 48 drawings for 2 seconds, but planning when and hwere my tweens are I think is my issue. I start with pose to pose or keys, usually these are 5-6 drawings and make my way to straight ahead for inbetweening, but I always notice I need more and more drawings to get the smoothness or timing Im looking for, and eventually either exceeding the original 48 drawings or just constantly going back and forth to fix timing issuss (easier to do with digital but stil I feel Im doing something wrong or not efficently.) it makes labeling the drawings hard too... I can't simply do pose to pose and labe l each key pose as 1, 4, 6, 7 and inbetween everything as I see professionals do, cus the timings never right when I do it that way, I eventually realize I need more drawings between Keys 1 and 4, despite labeling it as if I needed only two (so basically drawings 2 and 3 become 4 5 6 7 ect ect, which throws the count all off too). I still haven't found any animation tutorial that can explain it yet, so I'm basically asking if it's possible you can make a video on the subject someday? no rush.
one thing i was told to pay attention to is the knees. A lot of people regardless of height are usually lined up at the knees, the length of the knee and tibia are gonna be roughly the same height for just about everyone. Something about the femur bone being the actual bone that gives us the change in height or something I can't remember who or where I heard this but it's been a consistent observation (of course other factors too like neck length torso length, but the tibia remains the same height). A 5ft person and a 6ft person are at equal height at the knees, but only at the knees. Its hard to explain but essentially no matter the height most humans line up proportionally at the knees, the tibia's per person is the same length. Your shorter characters show case what I mean- they're all lined up, roughly, by their knees, despite the somewhat varying heights! tho I notice there's an exception when the height difference is extreme- a 4ft person and a 7ft person don't line up at the knees (like ur tiniest character Elf 1 compared to eveyone else, and the taller woman Vampire compared to everyone else.). But even for a 7ft person their knees tend to line up with a say an 8ft person.
