Lenny Breau was hands down the most versatile guitarist on the planet. From Chet Atkins-style Country, to Jazz, to Classical and Flamenco, he technically performed those styles with equal authenticity. If Rock shredders were around in his time, he would have mastered that as well - if he thought it was worth his time.

Guthrie is obviously a phenom, but listen to Eric Johnson’s full albums. He plays acoustic fingerstyle compositions as well as he plays instrumental rock.

Steve Morse for sure but what of Steve Howe: classical, country pickin, proggy rock, fingerstyle, plus plays pedal steel, jazz, mandoliny thingee (portuguese guitar in Seen all good people); Also Andy Summers: serious acoustic guitar work, and he pushes a lot of boundaries in rock guitar in his solo work 'Under-rated' for sure...

I agree with the Tommy Emmanuel suggestion. I also would add that Eric Johnson should not be anywhere near this list..... versatile?? C'mon now..... Timmons can demolish him and you've got him 9th....lol

Agree with #6,5, 4 & 1, but many were just EJ clones. I find EJ's sound a little too mid-range. #7 took EJ's sound to the next level. Zakk Wylde back in the Ozzy days had great tone. I'd replace Verheyen for Gibbons, replace Mantel for Vandenburg, scratch 10 & 9 & 3 off the list ..nothing unique or innovating there. Find a spot for Mark Tremonti, Gary Moore & Vai.

VERSITILITY means the ability to turn their hand to any style; Rock, Metal, Blues, Jazz, Fusion, Country, Acoustic. So we're not talking about the player with the most feel cos that's too subjective; or the best song-writing ability, cos again that's too personal. We're talking about the player who can show themselves as a world class player in EVERY style and be 100% authentic and believable whatever style they play. In that respect I think Guthrie is arguably the best that ever lived
