Native plants for wildlife! and nursery road trip!
How long did it take you? I am thinking of doing it all over my house. Is this a crazy idea?
Why do they have needle
Large plant looks so much better after pruning!
👍
When do you do this
Usually right after they are done blooming. Cheers!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Did you install your own floors recently? Are those just 1x12 pine planks? Looks like you might have just taken some planks and nailed them to the floor???
I love them, by the way, just super impressed.
Hello, Thank you for commenting! We installed those floors a few years ago now, they are 1x12 planks. First we age them then sand and stain them, then pre-drill and install. Cheers!
Thank you for responding! Did you put any grooves in the back of them to allow for air circulation? Were they kiln dried? This is such a great and natural way to treat floors but there is so little information about this (in English!) on the web. @@shewearswoolsocks2883
Yes, we used kiln dried boards and left expansion gaps along the walls. Cheers
Doing our own experiments with oak. Boards turned green but then I washed off with boiling water and reapplied (going with the theory that the soap is lifing the tannins?).
Your plant bedside manner is so soothing! Enjoyed watching you
Thank you so much, Cheers !
This is probably my favorite tutorial or educational video I’ve seen on pruning. And your voice is seriously so soothing! You are so pleasant to watch and you teach very well! I can’t wait to go take care of my Rhodies! Thank you! New subscriber! ❤️
Wow, thank you! Such a nice compliment, so glad you found this helpful. Cheers!
I watch a couple of videos of pruning and this one was the best she very good in explaining the deadheading. Which is what I wanted to learn. Great video. Going out to deadhead now. 😀
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the nice comment! Cheers!
What's the vinegar for?
Can you kill a rhododendron whilevpruning
Hello, yes actually lots of things can injure or kill plants. It would be hard to know if pruning caused it though because many things beyond our control can be harmful…eg. drought, lack of light, too much rain or overwatering, diseases etc.. If you are new to gardening you should visit a local nursery, and look into classes or ask them for advice. They will be familiar with your area and growing zone. Cheers!
Great video, thank you! Question for you, I bought a home with really old Rhododendrons, they are looking very sad; long, leggy and spindly branches with few leaves and fewer flowers. How would you prune? Any ideas?
Thank you for the nice comment. You could try trimming it back about one third. Taking the tips off the leggy stems (trimming back to a bud) encourages it to send out growth below making it less spindly. You may loose buds for next year’s flowers but it might be good for it to spend time just filling out. Also adding good compost may help., and cleaning out any dead branches opens it up for more light. Cheers!
Thinking about moving mine to a morning shade full afternoon sun. Its been struggling full shade.
Hello, It depends on what type yours is and what zone your in, full afternoon sun might be too strong for it. You could take a photo to a local nursery and ask them because they would know your area. Cheers
Thank you
(~};) dead heading lol
Really good video! Nice details explained so I can understand. Well done!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you, cheers!
thank you for this, so helpful. Using a ratio of 1:1 soap to boiling water, how much soap did you use to create enough mixture to finish the floor in your room, and how large was the surface area?
Hi Clara, So glad you found this helpful. For our living room we used approximately 1 1/2 cups soap to the same amount of water. You could make more just to be sure. Our living room area was approximately 380 square feet. Cheers!
Oh my, thank you SO MUCH for creating this video ! I've been searching for advice on rhodos since I have very, very old ones in my new garden (they must be 4 meters in diameter...) and they've been neglected for a long time. I had no idea where to start or how they work. Your video is so informative, you cover it all - not only the deadheading but also light pruning and radical rejuvenating. This is excellent content, such a nice work. Thank you !!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for your nice comment and good luck with your Rhododendrons! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing How old is this plant? In which climate zone you reside and what's the variety Thanks
Thank you for visiting, this plant is approximately 20 years old very well established. The climate zone is 7. Not sure about the variety but it's very common and quite large. We have since moved from there and miss our garden but will be starting anew. Cheers!
After watching your video I went and bought and planted in my back yard a large snow queen nectarine tree so thank you for showing me
Thank you for visiting, glad to hear you planted one!, happy growing! Cheers!
Do you prune Rhodes in early spring, or late spring, or in the fall? We are in northwest Washington.
Hi Nancy, we usually prune them after they are done blooming in the late spring, they can be pruned later but you might lose flowers for the next year. Cheers,
Great closeups and thanks
Thanks for watching!
Nice! What does the soap finish do? Keep dirt out?
It cures to a mild finish and sure makes cleaning easier! Cheers!
Do you fill the entire barrel with soil or have a fake bottom for it?
Hi Diana, yes I fill my barrels with soil and have drilled holes in the bottom for drainage. Cheers!
Don Juan is a beautiful deep red climber! ...ruclips.net/video/OShUO67nWK0/видео.html
Thank you very much
You are welcome!
Have your Rhododendrons opened up yet? Mine are all opening….I live in the Seattle area. My neighbors that moved in a few years ago took out all the rhododendrons that had been there for 55 years…I call him the Rhode murderer….the area looks so pathetic now, even though they put other plants in. Just makes no sense why they did that, they where beautiful. I propagated some of my favorite one which are a soft purple with blue overtones. I have the same one you pruned at the beginning it’s also 50 years old…..they are all my favorites 😉
Rhododendrons are amazing for sure! We have just moved so I hope mine will be well looked after! We are in now zone 3 even (2) in a bad winter lol... so will be a new adventure to see what we can grow. Unfortunately they won't grow here so enjoy them for me! Cheers!
How did they look when they bloomed? Love to see follow up as there's not much good information out there on pruning. I have 2 of these and looking to prune. Some say to ground but I wanted bigger shrub so wondering if this worked?
I left mine to get a little taller but they flop over easier, which did you go with?
Great video :) I've grown cuttings for Hebe, Hydrangea, Buddleia, Spirea & Lavender. It is very rewarding when they survive and flourish for many years. Most of these are now on my channel header and I made a new Hebe video which shows these cuttings on their journey into big shrubs. These plants can be propagated any time of year if using plastic boxes or a greenhouse or anything to keep frost off them. Have a great day :)
Sounds great! Glad to hear your cuttings flourished it is very rewarding when it works out! Thanks for the tips on propagating! Cheers!
Love it ! Great Work, New Subscriber from Australia & a fellow wine barrel artist :)
Thank you!
Wow very nice😍😍
Thank you! Cheers!
what is the vinegar for?
Vinegar will kill any microorganisms left over from the wine making process. :)
Just planted my first Don Juan this year.. hasn’t bloomed yet
Climber rose plant is available in india'.wonderfull flowers
Oh nice job looks lovely and cheers to you too
lol! Thanks for the visit!
I like them too! The Emerald Cedars are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing this video with us!
Thanks so much for watching! It is nice having the cedars for winter, adds a little colour to the garden. Cheers!
It will be interesting to see what colour the centre is next year
Yes for sure! We are curious about that too. Thank you for stopping by. Cheers!
Oh nice I have only seen them once before so intricate with the lace on top , they are beautiful for sure can’t wait to see them in blooms 😁
Me too!! Thank you for watching! Cheers!
They look great and are growing very well there.
Thank you! We like them over there too and they don't take up too much room. Cheers!
Oh very nice and the best about evergreens they don’t require a lot of looking after if you don’t shape them great ever green fencing, others getting quite tall nice
Thank you! We like the evergreens too. It's great that they are not too much maintenance for sure!
In belleville Ontario , have several Annabelle hydrangeas in yard . We have been here 2 yrs and have \lways pruned in fall, you used the term late fall , what does that mean B4 snow . Is it ok to leave them till late March ? Does the mount of aun impact on bloom size ?
Hi Neil, Annabelle hydrangeas flower on the new growth that will come in the spring so you want to prune the old out before it starts to grow. Late fall or winter just as long as the plant is dormant, so you don't encourage new growth just before freezing temperatures. It may not bloom as well in full shade, morning sun and dappled afternoon sun is ideal. Compost might also help with blooms. Hope you find this helpful. Cheers!
Oh everything growing and flowering very nicely, so nice to see butterflies hummingbird bees we all need to work a little more in planting what attracts them for their food and environment, lovely
Thanks for visiting! We try to plant food for bees, and hummingbirds it helps them out and we enjoy the entertainment lol! Cheers!
Love the deer at the beginning are they the one who ate your garden? The echinacea is big, and i love the colour of your moonlight in paris.
It was a buck that we found in our yard lol but these youngsters were at the gate lol. We really like the roses too! Thank you for watching, Cheers!
The don Juan roses are beautiful, and I love the limelights.
We really love the roses and the Limelights too! Thank you for watching! Cheers!
Oh beautiful plants and great ideas for people that don’t have a lot soil around their homes they can still have beautiful flowers
Thank you! Container gardens are great and all you need is a porch or little patio! Cheers!
The onions look great, tomatoes are starting to grow bigger. The nicotiana are huge plants for such a small seed.
lol we were shocked at how big the nicotiana was getting. We had not grown them before so it was really fun to see the results! Thank for watching, Cheers!
Oh very nice, I love fresh vegetables from garden so tasty and healthy in comparison to store bought, looking forward for more updates 😁
They do taste pretty darn good when they are fresh for sure lol! Happy to do some updates! Thank you for watching!
The plants will look great as they get bigger, can't wait to see the vine maple in the fall.
Thanks, me too can't wait to see the leaves in the fall! Cheers!
Your new fence is a vast improvement from the old fence, hope it keeps the deer out.
Thank you! we really loved that fence and then we moved lol! (Also it did keep the deer out lol.)
Oh what a nice variety you have there and humming birds and bees are going to love it and you will have to catch them in videos 😁 to show us, good luck
Fingers crossed! Yes we hope to catch it on video for sure and would be so happy to share it lol! Thank you for commenting!
Oh that looks beautiful beautiful very nice job well done
Thank you so much 😊
