Gravel Worlds 2024 - A sea of gravel with no paddle
Not sure how we haven't made it to @gravelworlds before, but we were there in 2024 with the Surly Midnight Special, a whole mess of nutrition, and very limited fitness. Glad to live to tell the tale of this voyage, and glad to finally get to experience the gravel community up in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Attending an event for the first time always hits a bit different, and SBT GRVL 2024 was no different. Packing up the Surly Midnight Special for another event at elevation certainly had me wondering how this one was going to turn out, but you never know unless you go. I suspect I'll be back to Steamboat again. Here's hoping some peace is made with the locals, so we can enjoy some of the best gr...

Welcome to the big show! Whenever 5,000 gravel cyclists show up to Emporia Kansas to ride the Flint Hills, things always get wild. It was great to be back to Rule of Three in 2024 to get a bit of revenge on a tough day on the tandem last year. The experience on a mountain bike was totally different, and totally amazing. This has quickly become one of our favorite events every year, and much of that has to do with the atmosphere after the race and the fun to be had. It was a great day of gravel cycling in Missouri for our first trip to the Muleskinner Event. Things didn't go exactly to plan, but they rarely do. More fitness in the bank as we get closer to Rule of 3, Wicked Wilson, and Unbound Gravel in the coming weeks. Special than...

it is possible to put 700x40c tires on this frame?
Yes for sure.
@@backofthegravelpackthank you fam
Going for the shorter rides first, including the Waffle rides, so that I can do my first 100 in 2027. Goal is to finish in the top 50%. Cmf Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks for watching, and good luck! Remember to have fun along the way
@@backofthegravelpack Will do! Fell in love with self-propelled motion (bicycling) during my high school days (50-75 miles a day) and just want to get back into it.
Bought the $80 option. Very very very high quality. Excellent price point. Not much different to my Ale or Mumu kits which are way higher in price. I went for the short bib version and fit and rode perfectly. Will order more !
Nice glad you liked them. I've gotten a few more black bibs since, and really like the cargo bibs.
legit bike!
Thanks for watching!
Would you still recommend this bike in 2024? Or what would you go with instead? I currently have an all city space horse grx I’m about to put a little better gravel tires on it. But I think I want two bikes. One dedicated for gravel, camping, and exploring.
Yea I think it is a great option for that use. Its pretty heavy for some, but a really great bikepacking option.
Grea video! Hoping to build my own midnight special very soon... could you tell me exactly what model that wolftooth headset is, please?
Mine was a bit different with that fork, but this is what guidance wolf tooth provided me when I was trying to figure it out: "Your frame will use the ZeroStack ZS44 upper headset and the ExternalCup EC44 lower headset. Because the fork is not a tapered 1 1/2" fork you will need a crown race adapter. 1 1/8" steer to 1 1/2" cup adapter" Hope that helps!
Anyone who says watching other people ride bikes is boring have concrete in their eyes. Used to staring at concrete buildings all their lives.
Ok
Lol had to edit, that did not make any sense before at all.
Very cool! What would a setup like that cost to swap onto a bike?
Hmm good question i don't have a good current estimate, SRAM has some new latest and greatest out since this groupset, so prices have probably changed quite a bit
What gearing did you use that enabled you to make all the climbs?
@bruceunruh1685 I had a 1x setup with a 40T up front and 10-52 rear cassette. More info on bike can be found in this episode: ruclips.net/video/w5ZCmVm29iA/видео.html
I'm the guy right in front of you in the jorts. thanks for capturing the day. it was a beauty!
Excellent hope you enjoyed it!
You cleaned the stream crossing on a tandem! 🎉🫡
That was our crowning achievement for the day haha. All downhill from there!
I think there were only 4 tandems this year. Did you guys come back to Salida? We didn’t have any mud this year and the weather was nice
Salida wasn't in the cards for us this year. Sure would like to make it back at some point though!
Barn rat filthy fifty in pretty prairie maybe? An historic barn as it's setting. Chili and cinnamon roll as a meal. Beginning of November, so no worries about the heat you endured at gravel worlds
Nice I'll have to give it a look, I like the sound of the menu!
Did the van build end? You guys were doing a great job with the video's
Still going and still recording, but need to get busy editing and posting episodes I guess.
Nice video! I live in town and raced the blue. KOA is pricey but can't do much better for tent (or Van/RV) camping if you wanna stay close to the start. Hopefully SBT GRVL can keep the locals appeased and we'll get to enjoy the ride again next year.
Appreciate that. At least we are contributing to the local economy I guess haha. Has there been much backlash following the event this year from the locals that were against it?
Great effort in that heat!
thank you!
Great ride. It was so hot, I was a couple hours ahead of you, but felt the same. Coming from Vermont, I was not ready for the heat and paid for it dearly. Couldn't keep the heart rate down, couldn't eat or drink much and power had dropped dramatically. Fun times for sure and now want to go back to do the 150.
In 2023, there was two inches of rain the night before Gravel Worlds. There was a mile of dirt road that was a complete mud pit that no one could ride through. In other words, expect some challenges in addition to the course!
Thanks, sounds like lots of us had a day out there with the heat. Part of the experience I guess, never know what will happen with the weather! You should for sure give the 150 a go!
Congratulations Rich! You finished strong, very inspiring content. The fact you rode the race with a Surly inspired me a lot. I have a Soma Doble Cross (Tange Prestige steel) that I ride with 650x42 tires. I wanted to ask you if it makes that much difference comfort wise doing this race with a steel frame over a carbon one? Also, any tire width recommendations for this event? Keep the good work!
Thank you. I think a steel frame does help with the conform level for sure. There are some well built carbon frames that offer some of that same comfort though I suppose so each to their own. I've ridden this event and many like it quite a few times now on a few different bikes. There are arguments for them I suppose. For tires, I would suggest something in at least the low 40s or bigger. 650x42 be a fine tire choice. The northern route is for sure chunkier in some places though, so just make sure you think about that with tire choice. good luck!
Did you find Gravel Worlds to be more challenging that SMBT GRVL? I was in the same race with you in Lincoln, but I think I was about 30 minutes ahead of you. I thought it was a challenging course.
Thought the gravel worlds course was easier than sbt, but I struggle with long climbs at elevation. My issues at gravel worlds were heat related. Like to ride it on cooler temps, seemed like a great route.
Great ride !
Thanks!
You made it! On a super tough day! Great video!
Yes! Thank you!
Good seeing you out there. My first time too. See you at Bad Astra!
Likewise, hope you had a good ride!
good job Rich. I live out here in SF bay area. would like to try some mid west gravel rides! beautiful scenery.
Nice. Imagine you get plenty of climbing in that area!
@@backofthegravelpack You got that right. I regularly clock 30 mile rides with 2000 ft of climbing. My goal is to find a list of gravel rides across the country and do a road trip to them and see the beautiful scenery our great country has to offer
@@gregboyden564 Nebraska has 72,000 miles of unpaved roads and really nice portion of the Great Plains Gravel Route that goes from Canada to Mexico.
@@edc4052 thanks for this information Rich. I am definitely interested in visiting Nebraska and exploring the gravel there!
sounds fun!
WOW, excellent video Rich, well done!! The accomplishment is awesome!
Thanks so much!
You don’t gotta eat cows, though.
I knew by including that statement, this comment was coming haha!
Great video. The music really tied it all together.
Thanks Chad!
Great video and good work on pushing through. Been there more often than I dare to admit. Love the title :)
Thank you, much appreciated!
do you have a sense of how hot it was?
Not sure to be honest, forecast was in the 90s, lady at the finish said it was 100+ at some point based on some sort of metric.
@@backofthegravelpack I thought SBT was bad, but I'm sure the Nebraska race was much worse.
Luckily Gravel Worlds didn't have any of those long climbs STB does haha!
what is your camera setup here? Obviously you have a front facing camera but how are you doing the selfie shots?
I riuna gopro on a mount under my bike computer, and another on a Volta handle I keep in a feed bag for "interview" type shots. I've broken 2 voltas now though, so may need to look for a different option there.
@@backofthegravelpack I just bought a quad lock that I'll mount on the stem. I guess when I want to "interview" myself, I can just turn the phone on and start talking. Though the angle will be odd. 🤣
Yea I've been thinking about going with a quad lock too.
Bravo, heat and hills are no joke!
It's all fun and games, till it isn't!
Well, that looked like fun....(not really)...
Parts of it were!
Loved your video Rich!
Thank you! That names a blast from the past!
I rode in Kansas this same day and I can't image going 78 miles. It was so hot. Good job!
Thank you!
Good job Rich. Heat is for real. I did my usual ~40ish mile "easy" route yesterday in NC in mid 90's with about 95% humidity and I was on the struggle bus for the last 10 miles. Heart rate wouldn't go below 140 and my neck was cramping, which doesn't usually happen. I can only figure it was the heat. I have a ride coming up in the mountains of NC in a couple weeks. Looking forward to cooler temps. Not looking forward to 15% grades. We don't really have rollers like in NC like they do in NE. Seems like they'd be fun, maybe a little monotonous? Some of them looked a bit steeper than the Ride w/GPS route suggests. Again, good job.
I can't imagine riding in that heat yesterday, I worked in it but no way I would have tried 40, I did that stuff when I was young but my age is showing now. I wanted you to know that there's a 50, 100, and 200 mile gravel race every year in the Croatan National Forest, I'm not sure if it's in the spring or fall but you can check it out by contacting New Bern's bike shop ( Flythe's bike shop ) if you are interested. I haven't ridden it yet or the race that is, I ride the forest frequently.
Yea heat is kind of the worst isn't it?
Great video as always !
Thanks CJ! Did I see you were at gravel worlds? Sorry I missed you if so.
You're a very handsome guy... But I only made it through this video. Too much camera time on you instead of looking ahead. We mostly watch to see what the road looks like and what the scenery looks like. We can hear your narrative no matter direction the camera is pointed. Hope you don't take this as a negative but as a constructive comment. 😎
appreciate the input
Miss seeing your woman!
I'll tell her!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I was camped right behind you, neat to see my truck and camper in your video. I thought KOA was great, but agree that $85 for a tent site is crazy... i think that's what I paid for my camper site.
Nice, hope you enjoyed the event!
Great video! Well Done!
Thank you very much!
Another Great video. Good to know what's going on with the land owners with an event that will bring so much $$$ to the locals. Will the tandem be coming out to play this year?
Good question, I've been trying to get Cassie out but so far no luck
After multiple years of black, I think I may do blue or red next year
It was a pretty enjoyable distance, plenty of time left to enjoy the day
Bro you need to make some jerseys. I’d buy one
Yea I've threatened to a few times, I need to get going on that project
Moar better!!!
Haha thanks for the heads up!
Thanks for the van tour, that’s coming along nicely. Great sharing the course with you.
Absolutely, great to meet you! One of these days I'll make some progress on the van series videos.
Thanks for bringing us along😊
My pleasure 😊
Beautiful country, jealous!
It was a great place for a ride.
No offense, but a cheaper groupset like grx and new wheels woulda done a lot more for the same amount of money
No offense taken, but those are bomtraeger carbon wheels on the video. I'd interested in what wheels you'd suggest to upgrade to.
@@backofthegravelpack I didn’t realize they were carbon wheels, I assumed from the hyperglide freehub body that they were more entry level. It sounds like your bike is already specced out other than the drivetrain so why not go AXS. But if you’re really thinking about switching up wheels, Fusion Fiber wheels seem like a really cool technology, Atomik and Revel are 2 I can think of off the top of my head that make them. Also maybe a dropper post if they make AXS ones in 27.2? Edit: or you could swap the freehub body to an xd or microspline and bump to a 10 tooth if you want more top end
This was great! I'm in the process of building this exact bike but in fool's gold. Love seeing what the wolftooth stuff looks like in purple too
Awesome, good luck with your build!
