A Russian spy vessel, Kildin, packed with intelligence gear, caught fire & drifted out of control near Syria on Jan. 23. Flames & black smoke poured from its smokestack for at least 4 hours.
AP obtained audio, video, & photos from a nearby NATO ship. Kildin didn’t respond to NATO’s offer for help. Now stationed off Tartus, still gathering intelligence.
Russia has not publicly acknowledged the incident.
