Deer fence fail

Deer can jump over a 3' chicken wire fence, even if it has another 5' of monofilament line and flagging on top of it.
Fencing the Garden with 3D Deer Fence
Просмотров 15 тыс.Год назад
Night vision camera footage shows that our garden is being eaten by deer. We build a section of 6' tall fence on 8' tall posts, but that is a lot of work. Then we discover 3-D fencing and build the rest of the fence as 4' tall wire fence on 6' tall posts with a short fence of polywire a few feet outside of it. Happily, the 3-D fence works the keep the deer out. Bonus weasel footage is included....

Thank you, Juan, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
A quick update after a year with the fence. So far, so good! We had one doe get in - the gate was left open one night, and part of the outer fence was taken down to mow and unbeknownst to me, left down. All she ate in her short stay was a few apple tree shoots. We got a bumper harvest this year. Probably 3x the winter squash and a freezer full of raspberries and blackberries. We did have a lot of rain last winter so there was plenty else for the deer to eat. But they were around - we saw them. And they did not get in when their favorite food, apricots, were getting ripe.
This is the best video on this topic thanks a lot
Really valuable information! Thank you for the work you do to provide understandable and reliable information to gardeners and farmers!!
The local mule deer bucks have no problems hooking fences with their antlers and yanking the fence loose enough to step over it to make a gap. They know where gates are, and will check them frequently in hopes they will be open. They can jump high, and jump wide, but they don't want to do both.
If the deer are hungry, this fence method is probably not deer proof. So far it's working for us but the deer have plenty of other places to go to find food.
@@alicereinheimer5171 Yes. Your garden just has to be harder to get into than the neighbors' gardens.
You should never put up electric fence and not electrify it. Helped friends put up 3d fence with temporary electric netting then 8ft tposts with 6 electric strands and they never turned on the energizer and the deer learned it wasn’t hot and got in. On my 1acre garden I did 8ft t-posts with 7 electric wires with a hot fence charger (I also have goats). Rub peanut butter on the lines to encourage them to lick the hot lines and they’ve never gotten in the fence in 5yrs
Thanks for posting this....excellent information and even a diagram ---- how much better can it get? Appreciate your work. Jesus bless.
Thanks, I hope it helps.
Excellent Video.
My back yard is full of pines and the deer go running through the neighborhood a lot. I also have people tresspassing through my back yard littering but I'm not allowed to hunt them... I don't want to spend a lot of money on traditional fencing that won't stop neither deer nor man, but I'd be just as happy to deter the deer. I might hae to try this because I don't want to stop the deer from travelling. I don't want to be a big uncrossable block , like the neighborhing aparments did when they put up a giant 8 ft fence abutting my property. it just steers the deers more in my direction. If I could make a way to have a fenc around what I want while letting the deer still have the way to go across and around, We'd both be happy. I wouldn't mind throwing some seeds out there to grow into plants they want to eat so long as they don't come inside my small garden area to destroy. My Mum gave me 5 of her favorite hostas and they turned them all into salad bar over a few months. None survived : If I can put this fence up myself, I could save some money as well as mark my boundaries for the Human Pests who keep walking through and littering. I've tried Fishing line with bells, with flags, Ive made nets of mesh across tree paths and they all get snapped away. THIS double fence sounds like the solution I need. Thanks for the schematics and the footage showing the animals. I can't wait to put my trail cameras back out to see who's lurking in the dark this year.
This is an amazingly good video...educational and entertaining. Your garden is so lush and abundant and delicious ( I know...I've eaten some of the harvest!!). I love the ending shot of the happy gardener!!
Stunningly good! Really artistic and practical. I'm so glad the gardener ends up happy!
Thanks, Erica. Glad you liked it.
