If you want some good shelves right now, Sam’s Club has them for $99 and they have the plastic liners on the shelves and they’re six shelves and each shelf is supposed to hold 1000 pounds. Best investment I’ve made recently.
You did a great job 👏
Thank you! It feels like a real accomplishment.
So fun! Thanks for letting me come and learn from you! I love watching your videos and learning from you!
Come again any time!
We also use one of our bedroom closets for a pantry. Your food looks so delicious!
I like storing food more than clothes:-). Use what you got!
I freeze pumpkin in 2 c bags also. Perfect for almost every recipe.
Absolutely!
Thank you
What kind of oregano and thyme do you plant? It looks so lush and good.
Thank you! I actually have two varieties of oregano, Greek and Italian are best for cooking. I am not sure what kind of thyme I have---it's been growing so long and, joyfully, survives the winters. But it is definitely a bush variety, though I would love to find a great place for some creeping thyme!
I loved every part of this. Thsnk you so much. We have this everywhere. I’ll get out today and try this.
Great! Yes, I spotted some blooming down by the creek this week as well!
thank you for sharing very detailed and helpful
You are welcome!
I love tattler lids.
Yes, I don't have very many but it feels like cheating the system every time I use them:-)
I wanted to share my Mom's 14 day sweet pickles: FROM FARM JOURNAL'S FREEZING AND CANNING COOKBOOK THE RECIPE MOM USED TO MAKE 14-DAY SWEET PICKLES Adaption of heirloom recipe long treasured in country kitchens 14-DAY SWEET PICKLES 3 1/2 QUARTS (2") PICKLING CUCUMBERS 3/4 cup canning/pickling salt Water 6 2/3 cups 5% strength cider vinegar 4 cups sugar 2 tsp. celery seed 5 sticks cinnamon 2 cups sugar Wash cucumbers, slice 1/16" slice off blossom ends. Cut in lengthwise halves or leave whole. Place in 2-gallon sealed crock. Combine salt and 2 qtrs.. water in 3 qt. saucepan. Bring to a rolling boil. Pour over cucumbers. To keep cucumbers submerged in brine, cover with a scalded heavy plate that fits inside crock! Put a weight on top of plate; a glass jar filled with hot water, capped and scalded, makes a good weight. Brine should cover plate by 2 inches for easy skimming; if necessary make additional brine (3 Tbsp.. salt to 1 qt. water) and pour over cucumbers. Cover crock with clean Terry towel; tie with twine. Let stand 7 days at room temperature: EACH DAY, uncover crock and remove yeast film or mold with scalded stainless steel spoon. If mold forms on plate or weight, wash and scald them. Recover with clean towel. On 8th day, drain; remove cucumbers. Wash and scald crock, plate and weight. Rinse cucumbers; return to crock. Pour 2 qtrs.. fresh boiling water over cucumbers. Add plate & weight. Re-cover with clean terry towel. On 9th day repeat. On 10th day repeat. On 11th day , drain; and remove cucumbers. Wash and scald crock, plate and weight and jar.. If cucumber are whole prick each in several places to prevent shriveling when syrup is added. Return cucumbers to crock. Combine vinegar, 4 cups sugar, celery seed and cinnamon in 3 qt. saucepan. Bring to rolling boil; pour over cucumbers. Weight with plate and jar. Re=cover clean terry towel. On 12th day, drain syrup into 3 qt. saucepan, adding 2/3 cup sugar; bring to a boil and pour over cucumbers. Replace plate, weight and jar. recover with clean towel. On 13th day , repeat, adding 2/3 cup sugar. On 14th day, drain syrup into 3qt. saucepan, add remaining 2/3 cup sugar. Pack cucumbers into sterilized hot jars. Bring syrup to boil, remove cinnamon sticks. Pour over cucumbers , filling to within 1/4" of jar top. Wipe rim clean; adjust lids. Process in water bath 5 minutes. Start to count processing time when water in canner returns to a boiling. Remove jars and complete seals unless closures are self=sealing type. Makes 6 pints!
Thank you! I love old recipes
New subscriber. Looking forward to your channel and journey. God bless you all and many prayers 🙏🏻 Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister 🙏🏻 ❤️
Thank you and welcome! I love AZ I was raised there :-)
Hello, i have been watching different videos for the #ebcc and finding it so very interesting and am learning so much. Thank you for all the videos and love your garden. Have a pleasant day.
Thank you! Yes, I love this time of year for watching the videos of what everyone is preserving:-)
❤😊
Thanks for stopping by!
Another fun new channel I found using the hashtag every bit counts challenge. I love my big roaster too. Great for caramelized onions too. Your tomatoes are lovely !
Oooh caramelized onions is a great idea!
Omgoodness, use your tomato huller to scrape out Jalepeno membrane and seeds too! I just made 36 poppers to freeze and used it for the first time to do this. One little swoop down, and out go the membrane and seeds! 😊
Oh, that's a great idea. I'm going to start working on salsa soon and that will be very handy for the jalapeños!
❤❤❤
Thank You!
Feel fortunate to have found this wonderful video, thank you for sharing! We have plum tree and fig tree guilds & use all of these.. just haven't got them all in yet, but we only require to cover mainly the inner 4 foot radius, from tree trunk(s) outwards re the wellbeing of the trees/using smaller fruit bushes/trees also. Yet anything growing outside of that area also all contributes to healthy permaculture/good healthy growth in our food forest. Long may your harvest blossom and be ripe for the picking 🌟✌🏾☀️🐛🦋🌼
Yes that inner circle creates the guild, but outside still promotes a healthy happy food forest. What you have going sounds wonderful!
Your dedication to preserving the bounty from your garden over these five days is truly commendable. It’s a testament to your hard work and commitment to self-sufficiency. The care you put into ensuring that the fruits of your labor are preserved for future enjoyment is both inspiring and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing this valuable process with us. And I am Floating Village Life, Hit follow and let's explore together!
Thank you for the heartfelt comment, I'd love to check out what you are doing!
@@wanderingstarfarmhouse That's so great!
I keep all of my canning utensils, canning lids in a tote that way I know where everything is that I need for canning. Love your channel.
That's a great system. I actually do have a tote, with my rings and everything, but I'm not the best at following through with organizational plans!
Hi there, I'm 63 from NZ, just found your channel today. You wondered why the brining of the cucumbers was necessary. It actually removes some of the water from the cucumbers so that that water doesn't dilute the vinegar, thus rendering the vinegar not a strong enough solution for pickling safely.
Thanks for the info--yes I was thinking that might have something to do with it. Because when I salt my cabbage for sauerkraut it pulls water out of it as well.
My husband puts the cottage cheese on top of the tomatoes and calls it tomato icing lol.
Lol, well my husband put the tomato and cottage cheese between two slices of bread and at it like a sandwich, and I told him that was just plain ridiculous!:-)
@@wanderingstarfarmhouse when I was growing up we would make something that we coined Bagel Utopia, which was very similar. Toasted bagel half, slice of cheese melted onto it, topped with a beautiful slice of tomato and a scoop of cottage cheese and sprouts, salt & pepper. My goodness, it was delicious. I need to make that again.
When I was canning, I had a Victoria strainer, didn’t have to stem or peel. Just ran them through and out came sauce. I loved it.
Yes, that is definitely on my wish list:-)
Love these tips and recipes 😍
Thank you so much!
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I have never heard of putting an Oak leaf in pickles. What does the leaf do? This is my first time on your channel
Me neither.
Oak leaves, like bay leaves or grape leaves are supposed to have tannins in them that help dill pickles stay crisp.
Yes, Brenda, for the tannins!
@@brendaalter7172 thank you so much. This is a first time I have ever heard of doing this.
@@brendaalter7172I use horseradish leaves in mine, works well.
My mom use rub the end of the cuke to pull out the bitterness. What does the oak lead do for the pickles? I have never heard of that
The tannins in the oak leaf are supposed to help the cucumbers stay crispy when they are pickled:-)
@@wanderingstarfarmhouse thank you. You can teach an old dog (me) new tricks LOL
My grandmother was born in 1905 ... During the original homesteading. She and my mother taught me to do that to my cukes. Traveling, I have seen Asian cooks do it, too.... I personal think it works!
Good to know, I'm definitely in the habit of doing it now!
Hello am watching and amazed with how your garden supply you with lots a variety of vegetables. Preservation can be a problem. I have learnt something new here like it. Am new in your channel just ❤❤
Welcome! Yes, I have actually lowered the number of varieties I grow in order to simplify the preserving work.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Thanks for stopping by to listen:-)
CHOCOLATE ORANGE ZUCCHINI CAKE Favorite Recipes of the Sutton Families & Friends Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups flour (unsifted) 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup cocoa 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 3/4 cup soft butter 2 cups sugar 3 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla 2 tsp. grated orange rind 2 cups coarsely shredded zucchini 1/2 cup milk 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts Recipe instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, cocoa, baking, powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside. With mixer beat together the butter and sugar until they are smoothly blended. Add the eggs; one at a time, beating well after each addition. With a spoon, stir in the vanilla, orange peel, and zucchini. Alternately stir dry ingredients and the milk into zucchini mixture, including the nuts as a last addition. Pour into a greased & floured 10 inch tube pan or Bundt pan. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for about 1 hour or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Turn out on wire rack to cool thoroughly. Drizzle glaze over top. Cut into thin slices to serve. GLAZE: Mix together 2 cups powdered sugar, 3 Tbsp. milk and 1 tsp. vanilla; beat until smooth. I like to replace a tablespoon of the milk with 1 Tbsp. orange juice.
That sounds delicious!
sounds and looks good
Thank you!
Very beautiful place. Thanks for sharing my friend ❤
Thanks for watching!
Are you familiar with the book Uncommon Fruit Worthy of Attention by Lee Reich? It’s classic and I think you’d find some really exciting options for your orchard, like Jostaberry or cornelian cherry. Although they are vigorous growers, lemon balm is an excellent herb, because it is valuable bee forage and a culinary plant and useful as medicinal tea. Lemon balm, tea is safe to drink as an anti-viral. Anise hyssop tastes like licorice/mint and pollinators enjoy it, and it’s attractive. If you want to add interest to cut flower arrangements, definitely grow Angelica. Even if you don’t care for the taste of licorice/anise, it has interesting and beautiful sputnik inflorescences. Have you tried growing Alpine strawberries? They are an excellent understory plant. If you have a place that’soften wet, throw in some Joe Pye weed. I love those purple flowers.
Thank you for all of this info! I have started growing anise hyssop, and I love it!
Liquorice mint is a strong favourite here.. grows between the cracks where the seeds have fallen directly outside the back door to the farm area.. fresh tea every morning without fail is a joy 😊✌🏾🌼🌻
Recipe for: Chicken Soup From the Kitchen of: Esther Alderson Ingredients: carcasses of two roasted chickens, 1 small onion (sliced), 3 Tbls. butter, 5 cups water, 1 diced green pepper, 2 Tbls. parsley 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup sliced celery, 1/4 cup celery leaves, 4 tsp. pearl barley, 2 1/2 cups boiling water, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/4 cups diced carrots, Recipe instructions: Brown bones & onion lightly in fat/oil in soup kettle. Add water, green pepper, celery leaves & parsley. Cover and heat to boiling. Turn down to simmer for 2 hours & strain. Makes a basic chicken stock! now you can add anything you like to it; such as different kinds of rice or pasta. OR: Mean while drop barley into 2 1/2 cups boiling water, add salt. Cover and simmer 1 hour and 15 minutes. To broth add carrots & celery & barley. Cook 10 minutes or more till tender. add chopped up chicken if you have any. When ever I cook I save any ends or peels or vegetables that are looking a little old till full stockpile of frozen vegetable scraps such as clean ends & tops of celery, squash, onion skins and ends and outer layer of the onion, root vegetable tops . outer leaves of cauliflower and cabbage, mushroom stems ⦁ Here are some other ideas for vegetable scraps you could use depending on the season: asparagus ends, green bean ends, carrot peels, fennel stalks and bottoms, pea pods, chard and kale stalks, cucumber peels, zucchini peels and ends, dried mushrooms, herb stems such as parsley, oregano, thyme and cilantro I also save any bones from roasted or from COSTCO or a local grocery stores have Roasted chicken for $5.00 I buy 2 take them home and take all the meat off the chicken and either freeze the bones or make broth/stock as soon as possible in my crock pot. I love to combine all my frozen vegetable scraps with the chicken bones and make a really great broth! Root to Stalk Vegetable Broth Homemade broth is one of those things that is SO worth it, but can feel like such an effort. We love this root to stalk broth because you can save up all your vegetable scraps in a non-reactive freezer container and make it when you have an extra hour in the kitchen. Our favorite part about this broth is that you get to use the parts of the vegetable you might normally compost, so it's like making delicious broth for free! Root to Stalk Vegetable Broth Homemade broth Serves: makes approximately 1 gallon broth Ingredients ⦁ 3-4 leeks, green parts and ends ⦁ 1 bunch of carrots, tops and bottoms plus 3 whole carrots (remove large parts of green) ⦁ 1 zucchini, roughly chopped ⦁ 1 bunch of celery, tops and bottoms ⦁ 1 large onion, quartered or 3 onions tops and bottoms ⦁ 1 handful parsley ⦁ 1 handful thyme ⦁ 2 cloves garlic, peeled Instructions Directions: ⦁ Dump your vegetable roots and stalks in a large pot. Fill the pot until the water just about covers the vegetables. (The ratio here is about 4 cups water to 3 cups vegetable scraps). Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for 40 minutes to an hour. ⦁ After the cooking time is up, place a colander over another large pot and strain the broth into the new pot. Season with salt and pepper to taste. The broth will keep in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for several months. ⦁ You can also make this broth with whole celery, carrots, onions and whatever else you have, so if you don't

Please help! We borrowed this exact incubator, but we dont have the manual. It is set at automatic turning and 21 days of incubation. It currently says Day 3 and is still turning. What day should I expect it to stop turning and what day should I add the cardboard? I just dont want to interrupt lockdown, but I dont know what day (on the incubator) it starts.
Hey, I hope you got it figured out. Lockdown usually begins day 18. It should not turn the last two days. As long as the eggs have not pipped yet you can open it up to put in the cardboard. I hope you have a successful hatch!
@wanderingstarfarmhouse thank you so much for replying. I put the cardboard in last night, and we have our first hatch tonight! Now we're just sitting here waiting for the rest.😄
❤ Love this! Thank you for your help! Where did you get the scraper? Why doesn't the scraper scratch it? Is there a scraper made for it?
Here is an Amazon Affiliate link to the brand and kit I have: amzn.to/41GqeMi You may be able to find it at the grocery store. It is scraping along the surface parallel to the surface, so it does not scratch it!
@@wanderingstarfarmhouse Thanks so much! I bought a week or so ago.
