Here's why the beginning is so mechanical: the conductor rushed it by beginning instantly. Even though she indicates she is ready, the conductor must ignore that and give her a few moments to compose herself, feel comfortable, get in the mood. Let her take a few breaths and then start. After a couple of minutes she's in the mood...say at 2:15. And after that it's a sheer delight all the way.
