my OPZ and OP1 workflow
Disclaimer: I ramble in this video
I just wanted to show how I am currently using my OP-1 and OP-Z together.
Set up:
I am using the Control Track in the OP-Z with 1-Off, 2-Off, 3-On to have the OP-Z control the OP-1. Then whenever I want to perform on the OP-1 and grab that information I'm going to the Control Track in the OP-Z with 1-On, 2-On, 3-Off. In my settings, I am also setting the OP-1 Midi Channel to 6.
Here is a Doc I wrote up to try and make things a bit more clear on a step by step basis on what I did in the video:

Thanks I appreciate that! I think for me instruments give self expression and I gravitate to what helps me be expressive without too much friction. Maybe I'll do a new video this or next week :) What I do now: I do music sketches on the opz to build out song structures and then use Reason 11 to make them into fuller songs.

What if you just want to clock sync the OP-1 and the op-z and not send midi note data??

teenage.engineering/guides/op-z/midi midi settings for the OP-Z can be configured via the module track. first go to the module track by holding track and pressing module. the midi settings are turned on or off by holding shift and then pressing the corresponding keys while in the module track. You can toggle your outgoing midi data by doing "Shift+3" and have the midi clout out toggled on with "Shift +5"

Thanks for posting this guide, I’d forgotten how to connect these. ! I’ve had both of these for a while but the op-z took over pretty quickly. I find the op-z helps avoid the constant repetitive practicing of key presses that I’d do on the op-1 before recording... it’s nice to sort it out on the op-z and drive the op-1’s performance that way. Also building layers and overdubbing on the op-1 tape deck adds a new dimension to what the op-z can do. Next for me is going to be driving iOS synths from the op-z and into op-1’s audio input. Another fun use of this combo is using op-1’s sequencers to set trigs on the op-z - tombola has good results. Anyway thanks again for posting, it really helped me today!

I'm glad it was able to help! I think these devices open a lot of opportunities for work flow. A lot of what I've done is use my opz to do music sketches and then work on them more in a DAW.

What order did you attain those two? I’m curious because I’ve had the op-1 for nearly a year & I’m absolutely in love with it. It’s such a powerhouse in terms of versatility & it’s practically impossible to get bored with it since you’re constantly receiving “unintentional inspiration” when fiddling around with it. The main reason I’m asking you this question is because I really love the app/visual aspects that the op-z delivers, but I’m hesitant because I’m not sure if the cost of the op-z is worth the visuals alone, since the op-1 can do everything anyway. Great little tutorial too btw 🤙🏼

I started off with the OP-1 and really loved the portability and the synth engines. Eventually go the OP-Z and it was like those features but enhances. I think for me, my performance with the OP-1 is never really tight enough. So it is really nice to be able to punch in the sequence and modify it. Like it is a really really awesome place to sketch music and honestly the OP-1 is so expensive that I'm nervous to bring it out and about. The OP-Z is just way more portable, but performing on the baby buttons is rough haha. The engines in the OP-Z are honestly really fabulous. There is enough variety that I never get bored. There have also been a few synth engines they've released as they continue to work on it. If you want a screen you can just use your mobile device. I think if you can even get it second hand, it's a great great buy!

THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU !! I have been trawling the web for how to do this for weeks. This is the first time I'm worked out (with your Google Doc) how to sequence sounds from my OP-1 on my OP-Z. I am so grateful! This is a gamechanger for me now. I just spent the last 20 mins in an epic, fluid, jazz mix. Can't wait to get more going on with my OP-1 synced. Amazing stuff! Just a small thing. On nuber 9 in your doc, it says "Hold Shift and Select the Midi Module channel on the OP-Z", this should say hold Track instead of Shift. But I worked that out. I'm so pleased to have this working. No I just need to work out how to add my Keystep and Microbrute into the mix and I'm all set ;-)

I hope this doc helps clarify! I haven't really tested Pocket Operators with this setup. I think what you could do is just run stereo cables from the OP-Z to OP-Z if you want to have them all going through 1 input without the need of a mixer. If you wanted more control over each you could potentially get a Mixer for them.

Hi thanks for this, it really helped me. I have found that I have to turn down the volume for the track that I want to use as a midi master for the op1 to stop both playing but it works. The only trouble I am having is buzzing on the op1 line in from the opz. I have the usb charging off and have to turn the level (orange) very low to stop the buzz. But then the whole opz is too quiet. Any ideas please?

Its very odd, knowing that you need a ground loop isolator, a device for the syncing problem and I also have the problem, that any device I plug into the OP1 is much more quiet then the op1 synth sounds, even if gain input is on +33 and tape is on the highest point, for 1500€ for both devices they should interact flawlessly with eachother. Shame on you Teenage Engineering

I talked to Jeremy from Red Means Recording and he said dont even bother trying to get the OP-1 synced to Ableton because the desync is real. After trying all sorts of different ms delay settings, I found slaving to the Retrokit Rk006 as master is even more stable then syncing to an actual computer daw. I really hope TE comes out with an update that gets this all fixed eventually.

I love the sequencer on the OPZ. It feels quicker to sketch things out. It also has the ability to nudge notes after you record. So you can have a channel from the OPZ dedicated for the op1. There are 8 main tracks for the OPZ. So it just kind of enhances the experience. A lot of people think of the OPZ as a groove machine. I highly recommend checking out the OPZ subreddit for more people's feedback if you're considering getting one. I think they pair nicely
