I've trained Doce Pares for 20 years and love it as a total fighting art but I am still critical of all the arts that fight against their own style . The application has to be taken to a practical approach of an attack otherwise it becomes a choreographed set of moves.Agreed that it builds speed and perception but in reality , maybe unless I lived in the Philippines, I won't come across someone trying to attack me in my own style. This said then maybe it is now becoming more common with the amount of knobs that think they are training in MMA as it possibly was when Karate and Tae Kwon Do were at the forefront during the 70's.Fighting styles are more diverse and eclectic now which will always mean the dog with the most fight will win . That being said, the stick is a very devastating weapon in the right hands and one of the easiest to carry.If one wishes to cause trouble then beware, you will probably lose.I have it with me at all times but as yet have not had a need to use it.Hopefully I will never be in a situation that requires it's use, which in its' self is frustrating, not knowing how I or the multitude of techniques I have acquired over the years would perform.I can however vouch for the empty hand applications , escrida and pangamot which extend from the stick. They are practical and they work. All in all Doce Pares is a very complete and satisfying system.
