Emil's fate is one of the saddest in gaming, but also one of the most beautifully written. Emil’s Tragic Journey 1. The Innocent Boy (NieR Replicant / Gestalt) At the start of NieR Replicant, Emil is introduced as a kind, timid boy suffering from a curse that turns people to stone. He lives in a mansion with his sister, Halua, who was experimented on and turned into a monstrous form. The government had conducted brutal experiments on both Emil and Halua, trying to create "ultimate weapons" for war. When Emil discovers the truth, he willingly fuses with his sister, sacrificing his human form to gain powerful magical abilities so he can help NieR and the others in their fight. This transformation results in Emil becoming a skeletal figure with an oversized, grinning head-his now-iconic appearance. Though he tries to stay positive, he is deeply saddened by losing his humanity. 2. Eternal Loneliness (Post-NieR Replicant / Before NieR: Automata) After the tragic end of NieR Replicant, where his closest friends are gone, Emil is left alone in a dying world. He spends thousands of years wandering the ruined Earth, clinging to the memories of his lost companions. With no one left to protect, he begins cloning himself to continue fighting against threats like the aliens and machine lifeforms that eventually invade Earth. This cloning process has a tragic side effect-each clone loses a part of the original Emil’s personality and memories. Over time, Emil begins to forget who he truly was. By the time NieR: Automata takes place, the Emil we see is just one of many deteriorating copies of the original. The real Emil is long gone, and what remains are echoes of who he used to be. 3. Encounter in NieR: Automata - The Masked Merchant In NieR: Automata, Emil appears as a cheerful, mask-wearing merchant who speeds around on wheels, selling rare items to 2B and 9S. He seems goofy and lighthearted, but beneath that facade, he is suffering. The Emil that players interact with is one of his many clones, living in isolation in an underground cave filled with the remains of his past selves. His loneliness is revealed in heartbreaking ways. He has a quest where he asks 2B to retrieve lunar tears (a flower symbolizing his past happiness). If players visit his secret underground home, they find it decorated with memories of his old friends, showing that despite thousands of years passing, he still longs for the companions he lost. 4. Emil’s Final Stand - The Tragic Boss Fight One of the most emotional parts of NieR: Automata is Emil’s secret boss fight. If players progress through his side quests, they discover that Emil has one final mission-he remembers that his original goal was to protect humanity. Realizing that there’s little left of himself, he decides to make one last act of sacrifice. Emil clones himself one last time and challenges the player to a fight, believing that if he is defeated, he can finally rest. His boss fight music, a haunting remix of his theme from NieR Replicant, adds to the emotional weight of this moment. After the battle, Emil thanks the player and makes a final sacrifice-launching himself into space in a desperate attempt to destroy an incoming threat. As he drifts into the void, he whispers that he’s happy to have met 2B and 9S, even as he fades away into loneliness once more.

I used to hate this series a lot but the music is what kept me playing. 6/10 story, 5/10 characters but 10/10 music. One of the most beloved composers of our times. May he he expand to other series

this song reminds me of the Emil ending in the Automata- where if you did not played Replicant is less impactful, but you can feel his pain, and despair. That even when everything is lost there is hope, and as long we stand - no matter how wrong, and how painful, or pointless stuff is worth fighting for. Well, maybe except when youre about to extinct whole race, but i do try to apply it in smaller existential matters.

This thing singlehandedly carried me through finals a while back... got it stuck in my head and it playing prevented panic from blocking memory read access. (and slapping down formulas felt much more epic that way).

I will continue to subscribe to the fan theory that Yoko Taro is Emil, or a Emil Clone, who fell through a time/space distortion and landed in our world/timeline. Who once he got himself together and figured out what happened, decided to just, quietly, watch how things go without doing much to interfere. But then decided after a while to write stories/his biography about the crazy and insane things that happened in his homeworld/timeline, but, knowing nobody would ever believe it and would treat it as a amazing sci-fantasy dark epic at best, the ravings of someone insane (He watched Terminator 1 he's not going to get Kyle Reesed by a psychologist.) at worst. Decided to tell his story in the medium of video games. Let the players experience all the WTF in a interactive medium. let them *feel* the crushing madness and insanity of a world gone completely mind shatteringly off the rails. *And it's Worked.* Mad lad but I salute Yoko "Emil" Taro.

Our boy Emil kept fighting in an endless pit of despair for friends who were dead and ash for 7,000+ years. He's the bestest boy.

I fell asleep to this song from another video, and Emil visited my dream. Like a friend long returned to say hello again. The dream wasn't anything serious, he was helping me find sheet music outside of a orchestra. But when I woke up I felt so sad since he was gone after the dream was over. I don't even know why, I hadn't played the game for a while and this happened. I looked up the song to help get the melody out of my head and this song couldn't have been more beautifully made. Thank you for such an amazing edit.
