If you earn £1000 more than the monthly threshold (£2,274) you would pay £90 a month, if you earn £1000 more than the annual repayment threshold (£27,295) you would pay £90 a year (£7.50 a month). If the repayment threshold never changes and your pay never changed you would pay back this much for 30 years (or less if the debt and interest was cleared before this) and the rest would be written off.

It is likely the repayment threshold will change over the years (previously it has gone up yearly with inflation, but has been frozen for a while). If the threshold increases you pay less, so these sorts of changes aren’t always bad for individuals. The overall repayment structure (e.g. how long you repay) shouldn’t change but we can’t say it never will, as the Government ultimately controls it. Certainly for now it is unlikely to change retrospectively, and any changes to student finance are generally announced for new students going into HE after a certain date (e.g. students who start in or after August 2023 have different repayment terms).

It's 9% in total. Both parts get added together and one payment is taken and comes off the overall total.

The interest starts straight away once you receive the money (so you are accruing interest while you are studying). There is no limit to how much you can over pay, but as mentioned in the video think carefully before you do this, as if you won’t pay it all off in the time limit you may end up paying more. However if you will pay it off in the time limit you could save on the interest by repaying quicker. If you make voluntary overpayments you can’t claim this money back, and (unless you clear the loan) the amount you pay per month won’t change unless your income changes.

Yes I believe that as this would be a new application for finance the new repayment rules would apply, but as always you can check in with Student Finance England for confirmation.

If the course is considered to be a continuation then the loan would also continue and the repayments would be under the old system. So if you did a HNC and then went straight onto a degree top up this should be considered as a direct continuation and the student finance would continue and would all fall under the same repayment schedule. However if you took some time out and came back to uni to top up later on, this would be a new application so would fall under the new repayment threshold. However, you should always check your own circumstance with Student Finance England.
