2025 Völkl Mantra Collection with SkiTalk.com
I'm torn between the V8 and V10 Shapes. I usually stick to groomers but I would like to explore a bit more off piste ocassionally. I think I'm a solid intermediate , I ski at moderate speed, at blue runs I have a blast, can carve , control everything, feel relaxed , at reds I ski with a bit more effort but do it without any hesitation, and also blacks but carefully. I'm,49yrs , 178 height and about 190lbs weight. I'm leaning more towards the v10 because I feel they are more ambivalent than the v8s that are more a frontside exclusive ski .But I'm also afraid of the v10 being not too good at icy conditions. In both skis I'm thinking in 170cms , I currently ski Dynastar Speedzones RL 165cms which is a beginner ski that I feel I have already maxed out, they feel to soft for my height/weight and skill (wich is not great but greater than of those skis). Any input will be greatly appreciated!!!!!
I think you are on the right track with the V10. FOr your size, I would not dismiss the 177.
Any other early spoilers on what's coming for 2026 from major brands?
This looks like it would be a great East Coast frontside ski. I like the shape. I don't really like the name😅
Great Video, thanks for all those thoughts and insights! Which ski length would you recommend for a 179cm driver. Currently I am riding an 175cm race carver. I am not sure between 175cm and 182cm. Probably both would be fine... any recommendations?
Oh new thunderbird?
Close, new Stormbird,a step down from the Thunderbird.
Great curves😮
Got them today and spend a whole day on the slopes. Very versatile and fun in every circumstance. I would say they are a great pick if you only want one pair of ski
I m advanced skier, but don't want race skiis. Are these skiis heavy? How are behave when slopes and snow are not perfect, by end of the day? Thnx
I have this ski and love it, but I'm being told I can't switch bindings. I first wanted to because my new boots are grip walk. I have since ordered new boot soles to retain using this ski with the integrated binding. I would love to change the bindings as you have. This ski is so pleasing to ski.
I like heavy, durable equipment, and the Pivot fits that bill. You can find race plates that do fit the Pivot so the height advantage for leverage and not having boot out can be found. Some bindings have a upwards-lateral toe which is safer than the Pivot, but having your leg actually Pivot rather than your skiboot heel grind into the plastic binding heel and having to overcome that friction is great on the Pivot. Depending on your skiboot shell, the SPX plastics might get wedged together. The side plates of the Pivot can also misadjusted where there must be a very slight gap between the plates and the skiboot. The weakness on all Look toes except for the Axial is the lack of an AFD that moves laterally. I use a heated bootbag and wear Sidas rubber protectors on my bottom of my shells when walking. My racing plug boots also have screw in risers/protectors that can be replaced with new plastic protectors when they get too rough to sand out. I also spray teflon on the protectors and bindings. (Yes, I realize teflon is a PFAS forever chemical and I wish there was a substitute) Except for the boot out problem (i.e. high edge angles) the Pivot is the best binding I have ever used for releasing and not releasing (i.e safety). I have bent/weld or cut the brakes to get them more off the snow when retracted,, and higher on the binding. I can have the Pivots typically freeskiing on DIN 9-10 whereas Salomon, Tyrolia, Head and most other bindings have to be set to 15 to not prerelease. The Pivot is a great binding needing a fresh up. I would love to see the Pivot in a demo version and elevated as well. A better AFD that moves laterally is needed as well. I have some great ideas for a binding but I wouldn't be able to survive the lawsuits.
This video is talking about the Pivot 12 and SPX 12 (soon both will be 13's) and NOT the metal 15/18's that higher level skiers might want. If you like heavy, durable equipement, then the SPX 18 should be your binding of choice, it is heavier than the Pivot and also was the replacement for the Pivot at the WC level. Yes, plates to to lift the Pivots are out there, both older rave plates and two part plastic lifter but that is not the point here. No need to address your setting desires other to say we will have to agree to disagree with the other brands mentioned and as far as the "demo" Pivot, a track would complete ignore the one of the main characteristics of why skiers gravitate to the Pivot, the short mount distance. If you have binding ideas that won't survive lawsuits ... I would have to question their greatness. ;)
👍 great review you two😉
I have 10 days using this boot. I have the 100 high volume boots. I have a very high instep, wide, short foot. This boot is great, very easy to get on and off.
Do you know if they offer demos anywhere
They can have a random demo on the east coast Lets check with them. Also, they have a love it or return it guarantee
@skitalkdotcom I'm on east coast. Let me know if there are dates
i had Volants in the 90s (still straight and skinny at the time) and they were smooooooth as butter on chopped up ice and all kinds of eastern crap. Never chattered ever. But the weight, OMG unbelievably tiring making quick turns. So if they're now quick, that would be amazing!
I see you replaced the strap with a Booster strap. Would you recommend? Or is the stock good enough. Happy holidays
Stock is OK, Booster creates a bit more rebound.
Anyone know where I can get the replacement toe rubber for the sx92’s, for now I’m going to mold the good one and make it out of flex seal liquid until I can find a good replacement.
Hi guys! About the Look Toe, do you think is better for this 180* than other brands? I think Spx have 27mm heel elasticity so good for avoid prereleases right? But also will be "more confortable" in chattery terrain Vs other brands with less elasticity? Finally for a 87mm ski, spx with 90brake will be enough? Or tooo tight Thanks a lot!!!
I cannot say the 180* is better... or worse than any other binding that has a 180* . As we have always said, bindings at this level are about confident. But I agree with you, personally, I prefer elasticity in a binding, soem do not, persnal preference.
Looking to purchase a backup battery for my S4+ system but I'm reading that the 1C battery isn't compatible/interchangeable. Is that correct?
I believe it is not compatible ... let me look into it to see if that is the case.
Did they fix the plug so it doesn't come loose during the day??! Gave up on Hotronic over that terrible plug design
I have been using Hotronic heaters since the 1990's and have yet to experience the loosing issues you are.
Happens constantly- on my wife's boots as well. Why use a press fit connection? Makes no sense.
I bought the 2025 Lange RS 130 mv last week. first impressions are great, very robust and responsive with something comfortable. I came from Atomic hawks prime and the fit in 100 mm was perfect for me. It's agressive so pay attention to the ski you'll clip them because you could feel your skis don't follow them at speed. Tested with Mantra M6, 5% lower than me (a bit too small) and I recommend it for very good/expert skiers in quest of speed, responsiveness and comfort.
Are the peak , nordica and ripstick similar?
These have more shape than the Peak 88, Enforcer 88 or Elan Ripstick 88 making them more reactive on firmer conditions
My only problem with the S4 is the bulkiness of the battery pack and the way they would stick way out on the side of your boots making it hard to pull your pant leg over the boot. I was hoping they would switch to lithium and we would get a much slimmer battery that your pants would slide over easier. But it looks like they are about the same thickness.
TLDW - Talking in a parking lot and a few photos...
Great ideas regarding bringing boots on the plain and making yourself comfortable for a long ski day. If I have a medium to HV, can I buy an LV boot and get a boot fitter to widen it for comfort?
Yes most good bootfitters can adjust width in a boot.
I was attracted to this ski, flexed it in the shop and it's pretty stiff. How does it work in variable conditions like bumps and slough, it seems to be designed for groomers only. Attractive characteristics draw me to this ski.
Hi, I’ve been watching your reviews for some time and I have some constructive feedback I’ve been meaning to share for awhile: 1. In this entire 5 min video I think there are maybe two or three sentences where you actually speak directly to the experience of skiing on the ski. If you want to do an in depth history lesson on the past 10 years of iterations that’s fine but the vast majority of your viewers are not here for that. It shouldn’t come at the expense of the content they’re actually interested in. This problem is fairly consistent across all your reviews. 2. I find the “skiing is fun” thing is a little tacky. I think most would agree with me even if they won’t say it to you. I think if you could make a few tweaks you guys would have a popular RUclips channel.
84 is a good-looking ski also. The colors wouldn't be my first choice, but the design is sharp
I absolutely love my Volants. They were my first pair of "hourglass" skis when I was younger. Started with some Power Karves. When I started getting faster, I got 2 different pairs of Volant Golds, and eventually a pair of Volant Platinums, which I still ski occasionally. I, too, have a pair of Spatulas still unmounted and in the plastic. I also have a Volant/Aggression stainless snowboard I used for half a season before I realized how rare it is. I have a pair of Chubbs in the wrapper as well. Sad to see the V on the tip removed now, but glad that they're making a comeback in the US. My newest pair, purchased 10+ years ago, I had to get a friend to ship me from Austria.
I think we have a Volant fan in the house!
!!!!!
These vs Dynastar M Pro 85-90 for moguls? I’m the same “stature”
The M-Pro is farirly stiff, so it really depends on how you ski bumps., I would say the Dynastar would be more on the power side of the scale, and the Line far on the finesse side. So really depending on what you want.
Great video. Made me go look for the SkiTalk forum thread about this boot. Can't seem to find it. Did I miss one?
www.skitalk.com/threads/rossignol-vizion-boot-solving-a-real-problem-with-impressive-performance.35783/
Looks like a great boot. It's comfortable, it's easy to get in and out and it's a 130ish flex. That will be a game changer for many. I don't seem to have the problem of getting the boot on and off. My boot is getting long in the tooth and I need to look at a new boot very soon (K2 Spyne 130). Thanks for a great review.
I had the LOOK 99 RS back in the days
How do you guys mount blaze 94? On recommended or +1, +2? The recommended lien is quite long way back
We mounted on the recommended line.
Loved the zero camber mantra
You were the guy ... I heard there was one. ;)
@ lol the one and only hah
Demo bindings are perfectly fine for the largest (intermediate) group of skiers. I skied Marker demos on a pair of K2 AMP 80x for 9 years on piste, in the bumps, trees, out west in the soft chop and never a pre release and when I did cook a mogul they released no problem. Replaced them with Stance 84 177cm with demo bindings
Hi, what are other skis in this elite class should I be looking at? Looking at 80-90. MX 89 is also in the picture. I like to carve but want a ski I can take into the bumps. Like to ski fast. Thanks
Like BUDDAR! 😆 I'm wondering if you think the boot would make a good backcountry skiing boot? How was the weight?
Not having tech inserts will limit it but backcoutry skiing is still not it's forte.
Hi, would you recommend BCh 100 2025 + shift 13 bindings as an ubiversal ski for slope and one day touring?
Yup, you struck oil. Stop drilling.
Hi, what do you mean by strucking oil vs drilling?
@@pawelsz4825 You made a great choice, no need to keep looking.
Nice review! My daughter just bought the Power Joy in 167. I think the Secret would be a great one two punch for her. I personally would love to try that 4D drive for the Mantra 7. Thanks
The Secret 96 would be a great compliment to the Power Joy!
Excellent informative video. It is very much appreciated indeed.. Cheers from Philly!
I miss Philly, I miss the food.
This is a nice innovation. I get my boots on in the car or parking lot, thisnwould make it easier (and safer). I May have to try this boot out..
Was the previous secret the same construction as the previous mantra? I always thought the secret had a slightly different construction. As a male, I actually preferred the secret over the mantra. But maybe it was all in my head😂😂
No, Auras/Secret (96) and a few other like Kenja/Kendo and the 102's are the same as the unisex counterparts in shape and construction.
Just bought a pair. Expensive but if you want a zipfit it is a good value because those alone run ~$500. At 140, it wasn’t as stiff as I was expecting, which is good for me. Some other brands’ 130 felt stiffer.
The BOA system is great!
Thanks for the video about the new Hotronics stuff...but how do you recharge the battery?? Can you use a regulard USB cord I wonder??? Does it have to be plugged into a wall socket in order to charge?? Also, it sounded like, in the video, that the pre-installed elements in the foot beds, only work with the 2C battery??? Is that true? Can't be right? Wouldn't they also work with the 1C battery??? Thanks...Can you tell I need a little help here???
The batteries come with a (propriatary) charging cable that plug into a USB adapter.
Thanks for the vid! I just have to convince my wife to let me get one more ski. Ha Ha
Thanks for the great information. The Secret and Mantra look like amazing skis!
I believe the superseded Yumi 84 with the combined a glass frame/Titanal underfoot has now evolved into the Secret 84.
You are correct. The old Yumi is now the Secret 84 going forward.
How does the ‘25 RS LV 130 compare in volume to the Tecnica Mach 1 LV 130?
The Lange definitely has more room over the instep for one.
I guess Fischer CT's 'Diagocarbon' under that binding worked so well Head had to steal it.
Have fun this year!
